Vampire refusing to work
« on: March 20, 2012, 09:33:40 pm »

I managed to isolate a vampire but he refuses to go to his new isolated working station. I created a small room for him to spend the next few hundred years in and assigned him to the burrow but he's just sitting in the dining hall no jobbing about with the rest of my lazy dwarves. Is there any way to force him into the burrow?

I seem to have found a workaround. The vampire refuses to enter burrows or do jobs like pulling levers but you can still station them by drafting them and stationing the entire squad. Now he's sealed away safe and sound forevermore doomed to double check how many plump helmets we own.

Burrows don't force a dwarf to stay in a certain place, they just force a dwarf to only take jobs inside the burrow.

Ah, that explains it here. Thanks fuzzy zergling!

Burrows *should* work. Usually I make a burrow covering only the depot to force my broker to go there when caravans arrive. Assigning him there will even cancel parties ("no floor space available).

Vampires might be a bit more reluctant to go to their burrow but if you give them a small complex of bedroom, throne room/office and dining room they will go there pretty soon. Especially when you make them bookkeeper which requires them to go to their office to work (they will go to bedroom and dining room as well to fake resting and eating, but not right away). Disable hauling because there is a bug where you will get them frozen at a spot spamming cancellation messages when they are trying to carry stuff to a stockpile which is not part of the burrow.

burrows in different z levels seem to need to have access to the stairs/ramps within the burrow in order for them to get there...

if your meeting zone is outside the burrow and in another z level and the stairs/ramps are not part of the burrow, your dwarf will get stuck on the meeting zone unable to move to the burrow since he can not path there...

you can also station a single soldier somewhere, less trouble, probably.

I've been finding the draft->Station option to be the safest. When I've trusted them to remain civilian, the vampires tend to wander off and bite somebody on a creative "longcut" to the new burrow.

I assign the levers to my vampires, so that no one else can fulfill the request for repeated lever pulls there.  They always go to their lever fairly quickly.  Then I lock the door and wall it over.
