If fortresses had a clown position
« on: March 16, 2012, 10:51:37 pm »

In the nobles list, appointable by yourself,

Where the object was not to tell jokes, but rather faff about all day perform physical comedy, as-per certain medieval jesters,

What would the dwarves who occupied that position do differently?

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

They'd dodge into the well on purpose.

They'd sit in the dining hall and mind their own business.  Such a crazy act for a dwarf to undertake!  How exotic!  They might also drink from a cup every now and then.

Otherwise, I figure every bit would start with, "Hey, lookit what I can do with this battle axe!"

Well, assuming cotton candy can be reached, they would obviously perform the greatest of all dwarven practical jokes. Digging down.

For the more mundane, not so apocalyptic clown (the thought of such a thing!) I'd say he would try walling in builders on purpose, and of course making faces at on-coming goblin sieges. Some damn funny faces mind you. Not that it would matter, he'd be impaled like the rest.

Clearly, this represents six side-by-side wheelbarrows, as indicated by the right half of the icon.  The left half indicates they are carrying babies with hats in these wheelbarrows.

Presumably, they are lining up to dump them into the baby furnaces.

So (s)he'd do everything as normal, but on purpose?

Given combat reports, though, I'd imagine a dwarf swinging around a battle axe trying to impress his peers would be entertaining.

Dwarven slapstick would pretty much be the Three Stooges with beards.

Taunting and belittling the player with randomly generated sentences would be quite amusing.

edit: And yes, i'm talking about fortress mode.  :P

Except longer and braided.
...
Though I imagine dwarves generally do Three Stooge antics on a daily basis.

Oh god... Dwarven slapstick comedy on a daily basis? We'd have dead dorfs EVERYWHERE.

The way I see it, dwarves absolutely have no sense of irony or the absurd. So I figure that dwarven humor is mostly a matter of schadenfreude. A dwarven clown would either have accidents on purpose, or cause other people to have them so that everyone can laugh.

So, yeah, Three Stooges is about right.
