Goblin cave explorers

I have POW's but don't really want to execute them (bored of the exercise), if I release them into the caves will they stay there or try to move off the edge of the map?

They will flee to the map edge.  This will not reveal the caverns to you, but they might run into forgotten beasts or something on the way out.

They'll run straight off the edge of the map and into the caverns. Also works on elf merchants.

For exploration, throw cats into the caverns.

New question:
I have had the caves sealed off for 2-3 years. I opened them once back all those years ago and instantly got mobbed by around 5 cave critters. Do FB's spawn even if you wall yourself off from the cave?

Also is it still safe to pit prisoners?

FBs spawn even if you never opened the caves.

Pitting seems to be idiot proof currently - I had no problem pitting armed siegers and thieves without the cage being right next to the pit (in 34.04).

How about placing the gobbos on an elevated platform in the cave? Will flying FB's snack on them?

why kill them? They are great training targets for my military. Confiscate their equipment and release them into a pit of 6 hungry dwarven lashers.

i think he wants a way to explore the caverns without really endagering his people.

but why do people like using pows as training dummies? why not just lets your troops spar? they can't get hurt and still earn experience.

and why hungery dwarfs?

animals work as exploring dummies, especially since you can control them by placing meeting hall activity zones.

1) I know, but since gobbos aren't a great way of doing it, was suggesting another use for the gobbos he had.

2) Sparring and training doesn't give nearly as much XP as a battle arena does. And with naked goblins and armored dwarves, extremely little chance of injury.

3) Honestly, I have no Idea. I think I had 'bloodthirsty' in my mind, and somehow that translated into hungry since I was a bit distracted at the time.

 :D now i'm hungry

i think i have another idea for the goblin as well, they would be your first line of defense agaisnt the megabeasts in the carverns, why sent a good 5 axdwarves when they could use some goblins for a meatshield then attack it from behind
