Dwarf Fortress Theme Music Remastered
« on: March 15, 2012, 09:54:56 am »

Hey everyone, accidentally stumbled upon this, and decided that 1) was pretty cool, and 2) that this needed a little bit more exposure, and that hopefully you guys like it as I do. Anyway, enjoy  :)

Thats actually not that impressive.

I could duplicate that in a few minutes using the midi(which is probably how he did it).

I have actually sat down before wanting to rework it into a more ambient type track, but I'm so fond of the original I couldn't do anything to it. Its perfect the way it is.

I've wanted to record a version of the song with a bit less static in the background (you can really hear it during the slow section, especially when the harmonic is played), but I don't have a classical guitar or a capo, so I can't really do that.

That is actually awesome. Sounds a bit less 'twangy', and a bit more strange.

It may not be everyone's thing, differing opinions etc, just wanted to put it out there to see if others would enjoy it :)

Sounds more like he just use garageband and messed around with a few effects... more than 'made from scratch'

I'm sorry to say, but if i was the original author of the dwarf fortress sound track music, and somebody said they wanted to offer me a licensing deal to use a remastered recording of my work in a film placement, and then played me this, i would groan and say "oh god it's horrible"...

...And then i would say "ok ok yes go ahead i need the money".

I like the correctness of the timing of the notes for this BUT.

It does not even scratch the surface of the magic of the original.

Sorry mate but i think its a good try.

Oh hey look, a thread relevant to stuff I'm doing.

When I picked up DF, I noticed the music had a certain charm too it, and made it my goal to fuck it up dramatize it.

So, I started work on remixing it into a movie-style track.

I plan on using no samples of the actual song, basically referring to it for tone, and chord structure.

The sample I am posting is a grand total of maybe an hours work, as I continue to be distracted by the actual game. It is nowhere near complete, and may not resemble this sample at all once it IS complete.

I came across this while looking at the first video, and found a website to convert it to a .ogg file to use as my in-game music.

I love it; just wish it were a couple minutes longer since the loop point is obvious and comes up frequently.

I like it. Nothing can replace the original, but that doesn't mean I can't like this, too :P

I'm both a DJ and producer, when I produce I work mainly in FL and ableton. FL has a new plugin called Melodyne, you can drop in any piece of music and it will give you the notes played. Its also pretty accurate. Once I've got that I can just drop the midi notes into any instrument and play with it however I like.

http://www.soundcloud.com/za-pagan is my soundcloud. Ghosts and goblins was made with a midi of the theme song from the game.
