Not sure if this should be a bug report or suggestion, but in any case:

When a stockpile is set up to receive items from a minecart stop, haulers need to preferentially empty the minecart into the stockpile before crawling all over the fortress for items to put in the stockpile, lest minecarts become completely useless in the case of overflowing stockpiles.

This is especially a problem when trying to haul stone, which is biggest draw (hah) of minecarts in the first place.

I think you empty minecrats into specific stockpiles, or else the nearest?

Well, yes; minecarts can be set to give the items within them to a specific stockpile, but the problem is that whenever a spot opens up in that stockpile, dwarves will happily crawl all over the fortress and haul any non-stockpiled item back to the pile, rather than simply moving the items in the minecart one or two tiles to the pile.

You can set it so that the stockpile only accept things from its 'links' by 'q'ing it and then pressing 'a'
