on the prosect for aquifer
if prospect all says aquifer in z-levels 35-69
all that means is that
a) there is a least 1 aquifer tile in level 35
a) there is a least 1 aquifer tile in level 69
c) there are no aquifer tiles below 35 and above 69

I think aquifer are usually between 1 at 3 or 4 tiles thick, so you will have a few layers of aquifer 2 or 3 levels below surface everywhere on a step mountain range

Actually, if you look at the map with reveal on and d-d as if you're going to designate area for digging, then aquifer tiles should be flashing blue; you could use this to see exactly how thick the layer REALLY is.

And been a bit smug over generating a world with an elephant monster that got 87763 sentient kills.

Very nice... I've done that before, just hadn't thought of trying it while it's revealed :p eh, next time :p I only revealed it to see all the granite, lol.

Is it because light travels faster than sound,
that people appear bright until you hear them speak?

If you have multiple biomes, they could each have separate aquifers at different depths on different parts of the map. So the north half of the map may have an aquifer from 110-112, and the south half may have an aquifer from 135-136, as a simple example.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.
