Also worth noting, if you open the stockpile menu "p" you can set "reserve barrels".  Dwarves will stockpile food and such into barrels until there are X barrels left empty, and leave those.  However, they will still booze with those barrels and produce syrup and other "produce to barrel" items.  Using this, you can ensure "there will always be X barrels available for production".

I find it amusing. New comers pointing out stuff that I already accepted / got used to.
But I have to give it to OP on some of the issues he pointed out, like 10. I don't expect a remake of the interface to make it more intuitive / unified any time soon. But it is a valid point.

A boring, structured programmer like myself could create a million games and none of them would come close to the madness that is dwarf fortress.

Ha-ha, yes, I even bore myself when I try to design my own games.  They might be based on good science, but they are lousy !!science!!
