What the necromancer?
« on: March 13, 2012, 06:24:04 pm »

So, I keep having tigerfish skeletons in my non-evil tower-neighboring (barely) come to life, apparently a human necromancer is responsible, but there was no announcement and no necromancers are on the units screen. The only evidence is the combat log of Tulon Oklemeke, Human Necromancer, filled only with the reanimations of the skeletons.

It's really annoying my military to run out and stomp them every time, and I'm currently in the process of excavating a newer, more aptly sized fort so my haulers have their hands too full dump all the skeletons in time...

This a bug or a feature?

EDIT: OK, now some pangolin skeletons are being raised, this time by a completely different necromancer... What's going on here?

Sorry for double post, my edit isn't working very well for some reason. A hilarious little tidbit, while my civilians were able to easily destroy the skeletons in but a single hit, a piece of head scale reanimated and bit a cat and a fish cleaner to death. I suppose it almost did the fort a favor with both of those, though.

EDIT: OK, now some hair revived and is running around shattering every bone it pushes. Is my game wigging out or something? I thought hair was supposed to be harmless...

EDIT 2: Alright, the hair is invincible. Every single attack just "passes right through"... This fort is going to be defeated by hair, how embarrassing.

Dump magma on it.

I would, but magma is about 110 z levels down and my dwarves are too scared to even begin construction on a pump stack. Also it killed most of my mechanics...

None of this sounds bugged to me. Necromancers can arrived stealthed, like ambushes, and can reanimate things without breaking stealth. Hair being difficult to kill is... unfortunate, but a natural outgrowth of the combat system and their total lack of everything. A bladed weapon should be able to kill it if you get lucky, though.

Also, magma probably wouldn't help much. For whatever reason, magma and fire still kill by means of massive bleeding, even if they're now less survivable than previously. Undead cannot die from bleeding out, however, so dumping magma on it would just leave you with flaming unkillable hair. The only advantage to using magma on undead is that when killed after being set alight they tend to stay dead.

Literally nothing can kill it though. I'd assume axes count as a bladed weapon, which is what all my dwarves are using. I managed to find two of the necromancers, but neither were doing the raising and they were both immediately raised again when killed. Every attack on the hair gets the "The Axedwarf swings at the Zombie Yak Hair, but the attack passes right through!" message. Either that or it misses entirely, which is more common. Anyway, I'm hoping Toady nerfs zombie body parts in some close-by update, because as comical as it is I had to abandon my 100+ dwarf fort because of a piece of hair, since it kept shattering spines dwarves would suffocate and cause tantrum spirals which included my military, who were all too new to have the "doesn't care about anything" trait. Hell, the first gobbo ambush hadn't even come yet!
