If it's because of he was appointed as the supreme commander of the army it was done by calling a vote. Majority supported him. It lasted around 3 months then he prolonged it to defend the western shores but I may be mistaken. After that, he divided the army from the government and made sure army didn't interefere with the government.

In the single party state era a party was formed by Atatürk's friends, at Atatürk's request. It was a liberal party but religious fundementalists and monarchists found their home at the new party. Members of the party planned an assassination against Atatürk. One of the members turned himself in and told all the details. Party was disbanded by the founders after this. After some time, other parties were found.

He disbanded some sects but I wouldn't call him a dictator because of that. In Ottoman Empire, sects had too much power. They are not weak today. They still brainwash children.

And revolts against him wasn't peaceful. They were mostly started by monarchists or fundementalists.

I believe he made a mistake by doing so many reforms in a very little time. It alienated masses. Even his brothers at arms sometimes disagreed with him and offered to restore monarchy with Atatürk as the monarch (according to the documenteries I watched)

Richard Dawkins on the "shifting moral zeitgeist"

Stick with this video long enough to hear the quotes from H.G.Wells you'll swear was a passage from "Mein Kampf".

H.G. Wells here, sounds like more of a fascist than Ataturk ever could ;D and he was considered a "liberal progressive" in 1902 when he wrote those words.

I also dont see any real resemblance to a fascism out of Atatürk.  As stated above, he put alot of big changes though in a short amount of time, while he may have done some unpleasant things, its a damn site less that most other rulers have managed to do in 1/5 of the years.
