Finding my way back up is starting to become extremely boring, with the absence of downward passages and long flat walls that seem to separate caverns.

Now adventure mode remebers every dropped item in wilderness, you can mark your way with something. Like drop stone per every ten tiles you move.

So you could make some kind of base camp near to cave entrance, and mark your routes with stones. You will always know how to get back to start by following stones, and you can "map" caverns around that base camp by always dropping stones into areas you find.

It may be slow, but at least you can be sure you will find your way back to surface.

That's a kinda neat idea if I ever want to descend again, thanks. I guess once you're in there's not much you can do though.

Slightly on a tangent, but you would think generating extremely open caverns with low passage density would make exploring greatly less painful. Has anyone gone down there as a husk yet? Considering they have the same [EXTRAVISION] as cave dwellers, you wonder if they wouldn't see there just fine.

It is said knowledge is like a foul-smelling herb. It must be cooked well and thoroughly with experience to make it palatable. A young scholar's knowledge is therefore not only worthless but disgusting. -- In Dwarf Fortress you have another paradigm. Gather as much of that smelly herb as you can and toss it at your enemy, fracturing his skull through the +capybara man leather cap+.

I think you mean high passage density. You want to be able to change levels on a whim. And the [EXTRAVISION] does sound awesome, maybe I should make a reaction of sorts to give my adventurers some cave-exploring skills.

You could give a player-creature wings and the ability to use them. My Bat Man outsider was just brutally slain, so I can't attest to that yet.

You wouldn't need the wings, all you'd need to do is add [FLIER], and remove it when you were done.

Actually passage density affects the average ceiling height of caverns. It also makes them much, more cramped because it increases the number of pillars to be found within them.
