I guess confusion like this is why they say you should never split the party. This post is what I actually do, instead of the edited out one.

Sven encountered the group with the equipment while he was still part of the way to the tavern.
"That is the equipment, right? I need a gun and hopefully some armor and a dagger or something."

[King DZA]

"Hmm, the little one seems to be in quite a rush," D'zelik thought, as he watched the gnome run past him, must be excited to finally get some equipment."

He then continued making his way to the palisade, curious about what else he would be wasting his time on before actually getting the chance to fight something.

Leiara adjusted the strap of her backpack with her right hand, strode over to the pile of dropped weapons and armor and picked up a rifle and it's complementing ammunition in the other.

"I've only heard and watched these things being used from afar. I wonder how much the difference is when you do shoot from one of these.

"I'll help carry the load."

Her swords would prove handy soon enough, if her use of this rifle didn't prove trustworthy.

"C'mon laddie!  There be baddies to slay!" Fibleck yelled back at the goblin, "Where be the rifles?  I used to use one occasionally on the caravan, can't quite remember where the trigger be though."
