Its good to have occasional year long parties so everyone gets to know each other, resulting in many married couples and larges amounts of children. The more children the better!

That means you will always have new peasants available to draft into the military, use for hauling, or for building megaprojects. And you will always need replacements for the inevitable casualties.

I keep everyone happy by rotating them in and out of the firing line. Turns out after spending a year stabbing goblins, elves, and giant war badgers, dwarves just don't care about anything anymore, and so happiness is no longer an issue even if everyone is friends with everyone else.
