The Fort Review threads have always been good fun, but I've never been really good at them because I can't read the default tileset in DF very well (DFMA is also a bit of a lost cause for me). Given that there are many out there that do use tilesets (especially given the ease of accessibility with the Lazy Newb Pack) I'm putting together a Fort Review thread using a tileset, as well as having some extra features and quiz questions. Hopefully we'll all have a rollicking good time. If you don't want to do the quiz, but do want to make some comments/observations, feel free to do so.

Update: By popular (100% of the commenting audience) request, I've also posted default graphic images for your viewing pleasure. These images are located further down in the thread.

This post is going to broken up into:
Background Information on the Fort - A variety of nonpictorial information that should provide some context.
Images of the Fort - A series of z-level images capturing the interesting parts of the fort.
Quiz Questions - A try your luck series of questions to evaluate your dwarfiness. Socks of various degrees of quality are available for participants. The questions have a wide range of difficulty, some are obvious, some are straightforward if you catch the relevant clues in the information provided, some will require hunches based upon your years and DF knowledge and subtle clues hidden in the information, and some will require pure dwarven psychic powers to guess correctly. I'll score each quiz and announce the results every now and then. Complete answers to the quiz will be given in a few days once everyone who is interested gets a chance to take the quiz without being tempted to cheat.

Looking only at your stocks, I'd say your primary supplemental industry, ie stuff to trade, is tools. All of your other goods seem to match up with what is typical for a fort your size. Either that or you have a MASSIVE mead industry.

24. 3, or as many as you have on site. There are blood thorns growing just below the surface.

32. Okay, they are coffins then. Still a few dozen.

New questions
35. No craftdwarf's workshop visible. Cooking industry is pretty healthy, and while the leatherworking industry isn't huge you could create a few leather items if necessary. Farming is a big thing, with large plots and lots of threshing and milling going on. Metalworking is doing fine, with items being melted into bars, and the large number of cages suggests those things being bought for both the cage metal and the creature within. There isn't much butchery going on because there's only one tanner's and butcher's, but animals are slaughtered instantly and a fast tanner could deal with the skins quickly enough.
36.  Flux. Maybe fire clay. Gypsum? There's some yellow stone in a stockpile in the sand.
37.  Dwarves? Tin. See also the above answer.
38.  No bone, no candy, copper is available, iron is more available, steel is technically available as always. But since I don't see any flux on-site or in a stockpile like the ore ones, perhaps you're only getting steel and steel items from the caravan.
39.  Not a huge amount. Lots of bars, not as many weapons relatively speaking. Steel is used first with some spare bars, then iron because there's lots of ore, then (bismuth) bronze if you have it. Copper is used for something, since there doesn't seem to be much in the stockpiles, but I don't know what. Not for bins, anyway. Crossbows? Ammunition?
40. None.
41. Legendary. Dwarves are really not fussy.
42. Sweet pods / cave wheat.
43. Pig tails.
44. Dead goats.
45. It rains water, infrequently.
46. Something comes across the desert and kills things quickly. It's probably not something that leaves a coating.

47. A line of traps, plus an airlocked depot, plus extra raising bridges. There is also a shooting tower.

49. Crossbow-armed civilians directed as necessary, large squads. They don't train heavily, because you need more ammo than that.
50. Serrated discs. Lots of them.

52. Image 81: A small structure with two exits, one sealable and leading to a walled and unroofed yard and the other going down into the fortress.
53. Image 80: Yard with a dead muskox. Something was shot and killed here and subsequently removed. Inside structure, sealable up/down staircase leading into the fortress.
54. Image 79: Fortifications with statues to force dwarves up against the fortifications. Pressure plate possibly controlling the hatch to the south, some sort of dump zone?

BirdsSalves is the second of my DF2012 forts. It was started to experience the FUN of the new undead menace. 
World generation was configured to produce a relatively young world with lots of megabeasts, evil biomes, high savagery and high mineral concentrations. It has more lairs than cities and years of rampages by werebeasts and vampires. If I read legends mode correctly, my dwarven civilization is mostly destroyed, with the kings showing up in Goblin Fortresses, possibly from kidnapped villagers. Goblin leadership is also dangerous. In the course of 500 years the major goblin civilization has changed leaders around 300 times. The first 179 years of that civilization were under the rule of a demon from the underworld, and after that the leaders only last about a year before being replaced. I think this is due to the goblin in charge being killed by a rampaging monster, repeatedly, but I’m not certain.
My first fort had a green slime rain that occurred very frequently and pooled. The slime caused puss and light blood loss. It wasn't very long until the entire map was coated with a mixture of puss, blood, and slime, in large concentrations. I gave up on it when my attempt to breach a multilayer aquifer just beneath the surface using the double slit method failed.

Currently BirdsSalves is experiencing the first of many undead sieges. In this fort, undead sieges release zombies from all 4 map edges that slowly blunder around. Necromancers will reanimate corpses and one of the biomes seems to reanimate corpses after a certain amount of time. My military was insufficient to do anything effective about the siege, so we forted up and waited for it to end.
In one of the early fort events, a necromancer was killed and now his ghost haunts the world eternally, with no way to put him to rest. This means that any corpse or corpse parts can be reanimated without warning.  Butchering is a task performed only very, very rarely with a full military escort. My only dwarf losses came from a horse skin and a stray giant bird corpse that somehow appeared by my magma forges.
Regardless of Toady's fix of the Mosquito problem, BirdsSalves has huge mosquito issues. Not only masses of 50-200 giant mosquitoes at a time, but also equal sized waves of undead giant mosquitoes. The Caverns are home to several megabeasts with fire attacks. Periodically the entire cavern system burns to ash. Curiously enough, I have never gotten a vampire, even with my current population of 110 dwarves.

Section 6. Current Fort Military and Defense
47.   What is Fort's defense based on? Closed bridges prevent entry by the undead. An airlock system around the Depot. The tunnel to the right on the first level is a work in progress secondary trap entry to keep the undead in manageable pieces. The Depot is within a citadel with a 3rd floor shooting gallery lined with fortifications. Very little actually closes within range.
48.   How large is the Fort's military? Small
49.   How is the Fort's military organized (type, number, and proficiency of squads)? 4 marksmen, 2 axe dwarves, 2 hammer dwarves. The marksmen are somewhat trained, the others are green.

Section 7. Image Specific

This is the roof of the entry house to my above ground fort.

52.   What are the interesting/functional/important features present in image 81?
This is the entry house to the fort. It is built to allow entry into the fort, only via going up through an eternally forbidden Hatch. This prevents flying building destroyers from getting inside.

53.   What are the interesting/functional/important features present in image 80?
The main roof of the fort. The M is a dead mosquito.

54.   What are the interesting/functional/important features present in image 79?
The archery tower. The statues force marksdwarves next to the fortifications so they can see enemies to shoot. The hatch and pressure plate are part of a flawed garbage disposal system that never worked.

55.   What are the interesting/functional/important features present in image 78?
This is the barracks level 1 z level above the surface. It was built to protect dwarves from the fiendish ash. It was built with solid walls to prevent ash entry, but this was found to be unnecessary, ash will not pass through fortifications.

56.   What are the interesting/functional/important features present in image 77?
This is the main level of the fort. You can see the different biomes rather distinctly. The fiendish ash comes from every direction, but the lower right. While it doesn't seem to kill, it does leave you unconscious, rotting, and surrounded by the undead. The masses of creatures on the map are all undead. The large square drawbridges are my atom-smashing defense. It hasn't ever been used.

57.   What are the interesting/functional/important features present in image 76?
The main entry of the fort. The path to the right is my zombie dicing entry (under construction). In later years I manage to increase the trap numbers and open the pathway to the outside. The undead, however, have no interest in using it and just mill about outside. The center is a large everything stockpile that I've been gradually limiting. Below it is my dormitory which has been replaced by the bedroom level. Also visible are the first fields, my wood industry, levers to control the airlock gates on the surface, my first egg laying room (new chicks have just been hatched), my only atom-smashing garbage disposal, and my cloth stockpile. The original breach is in the lower portion of the map. I dropped the wagon down one z level and then built a floor over it. It now acts as my sole meeting place and provides some sun for my dwarves.

58.   What are the interesting/functional/important features present in image 75?
My new tree farm. The number of trees is far outweighed by the number of herbs, and logging won't be fruitful for another couple of years. In the upper left is my animal pastures for pets, to the left center is my new egg laying facility. Walls are being built to offer prevent zombie corpse explosions if any of my chickens/peacocks dies. The center is my well and my hospital, and my sand collection forges. Actual glass production takes place in the magma area.

59.   What are the interesting/functional/important features present in image 74?
My new farm and food production facility. Large farms with mills, kitchens, a butcher, tanner, leatherworks, brewers, etc. Without meat, our primary source of food is farming, and diversity in crops is important for happiness and lavish meals. The egg laying industry isn't very productive yet, so I couldn't count on them. In later years egg production increases and so mixed meals are easier to achieve.

60.   What are the interesting/functional/important features present in image 73?
This was to be my main work area. However an accidental breach of the aquifer resulted in an emergency evacuation. My first craft workshop is now permanently underwater. Things were touch and go for a little as my masons were not bricking up the leak very quickly; several levees for water containment were abandoned. The graveyard is in the top right, filled primarily with random invader undead parts. The parts are NOT in the coffins, nor are they only claimed by the invader. I'm not sure what's going on. Additionally, the necromancer ghost has several coffins claimed, both for his various parts and for the ghost himself. Freeing the coffins does allow for new occupants, but the coffins are then reclaimed by various undead invaders. The center of the map contains my stone, gem, and craftsman workshops.

This is a level I mined out to provide stone, ore, and coke. Note that almost all of the area has been smoothed. I've been working on training my engravers up to a very high standard before letting them carve. The left side of the map is primarily the edge of the aquifer.

My bedroom complex. 3x3 rooms with 2 chests, 2 cabinets, and 1 bed. There is space for 114 dwarves.

The food storage with my massive food and booze stockpiles. Without wood being present I have to rely on stone pots for storage. They are classified as tools which has inflated my tool count.

65.   What are the interesting/functional/important features present in image 60?
My large dining room and my exploratory mining tunnels.

66.   What are the interesting/functional/important features present in image 33?
The magma forges. The ore stockpiles are on the far left. The middle stockpiles are for nonmastercrafted equipment and forged bars. The upper stockpile is a nonbin bar stockpile that draws from the larger stockpile with bins. This lets me have a rough idea of what bar stocks I have available with my limited metal production. 

A small booze stockpile is present to allow workers to have a drink without having to return to the dining area. Armor and weapon construction now uses (seems to) use the correct number of bars, so steel production is easily overwhelmed by weapon and armor crafting. My armorer quickly became legendary, but his ability to construct mastercraft steel armor is very, very poor. I've ended up losing a tremendous amount of steel to reforging attempts. Tragically, he loves iron, so he makes mastercraft quality iron gear very easily. The weird borders to the region mark warm edges. I missed the magma tubes on the way down and still have yet to chart out there limits with my limited dwarf power.


Stockpile storage has been buggy. In later years, my binfilled stockpile has now filled up with bins and all bars end up here. My nonbin stockpile has stopped drawing bars from this stockpile. Occasionally bars are placed in the nonbin stockpile, but they are later moved to the bin stockpile. My dwarves have also carted bars from my magma forges, all the way up to the top to place bars into bins sitting in my new bin stockpile (bars are not allowed in this stockpile, along with almost everything else). After the dwarf drops the bars off he then either picks them up and takes them back to the magma forges, takes the bin down to the magma forge, or wanders off to do something else.
Military clothing storage is also strange. I have a simple military uniform, 1 of each of the following: chain shirt, breastplate, high boot, gauntlets, helm, leggings, shield, and weapon. The squads are set to wear military uniforms at all times, and to wear uniforms over clothes. My dwarves gradually drop off random clothing items as they come off and on duty. Eventually the clothing is picked up by something and taken somewhere, for the most part.

Looks very efficient.  Good stockpiling.  Appreciate touches like the "for-melt" stockpile, training under-the-sun, dorm/bedroom combos for owned good collection.  Probably took me a couple of years before I was doing similar things.
