does the melting down process take up fuel, if so, that is sad. Note: I know almost nothing requires fuel in a magma thing, i don't have magma.

Any task at a non-magma smelter/forge requires fuel. The only exception is gathering sand for a glassworks.

Technically, only reactions with the [fuel] tag (in the raws) require coal/coke. All of the reactions have the fuel tag, so yeah. What you can do is remove that, if you wanted to not use fuel; it'd just be cheating.
