Waterfall of death
« on: March 04, 2012, 07:48:23 pm »

Recently my woodcutters have been turning up dead at the bottom of a water fall.  I built a bridge over the river, and designated restricted areas around the falls (as per the wiki), but it's still a death trap.  Is there anything else I can do to stop the madness?

Build walls to prevent any dwarves from being able to walk across the river near the waterfall edge.

Change the values of your designations, set the restricted ones to 100 and make a well travelled route across. Or make it completely impossible for a Dwarf to fall down the river at all

This is an issue with pathfinding. Dwarves will path through any area that contains water with a depth less than 5. If it is deeper than 5 dwarves who are not able to swim will not path through it because if they go through they can drown. The dwarves do not realize that if they walk through the walkable areas of the water fall they will be pushed off the edge. Trader's will also pathfinding like this occasionally. A solution for your dwarves is to bridge the river and designate it as high traffic and the area around the waterfall restricted traffic, your dwarves will no longer die. This will NOT work for traders, for traders you will either need to build a bridge directly over the edge of the water fall that contains tiles with depths less than 5 or wall them off in a way that if the traders where to try and cross them they would have to path through water with a depth greater than 5, which they will never do. I had a horrible experience just like this a while back.

Floors over the down ramps anywhere the water gets shallow will work too, and the newest release will tell you if a ramp is useable or not.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Attempts to build a floor covering the mouth of the waterfall resulted in the deaths of 5 more dwarfs.  Going to reload and try for a wall.

Why are you trying to build a floor there?

Someone suggested trying to completely block off the waterfall so no one could fall in.

I don't know if this is what you did but if you designate a floor on the other side of the river to built at the same time you designate one on your side of the river to built some times the dwarves will decide to build the floor on the other side first. Make sure it is only accesible from the side you want them to start building on and it should work.

What you're trying to do is floor over the ramps on the level above the water, so that there's no path between one side of the river and the other. Like so --

Before, side view:
Code: [Select]
__      __ -> to wagon
##\1221/##

After, side view:
Code: [Select]
__     ___ -> to wagon
##\1221/##
