Problem
« on: March 01, 2012, 04:13:10 pm »

I tried posting this under bug reports, but it wouldn't let me, so I posted it here:

For some reason my dwarves won't collect stone. It is set so that they will under preferences, yet i have stone lying around my fort. I have my stockpiles filled up, however I set new ones outside my fort. that hasn't stopped them from placing other stone there. For some reason, they are ignoring some stones, and stockpiling others. Any help?

(z) (stone) And there you'll find your solution :P

Economic stones are disabled from tasks by default, if you want them to be moved dump them or turn them off :P

It was mainly shale, which is green in the list and not labeled as economic stones. However, even if it was, i had them listed as dump and they were not moved. Thanks anyway :)

Dump marked stuff needs a garbage zone to be dumped in. You will find it under "i" as (g)arbage zone.

They still won't collect it. There are idlers, so they should, but they don't. Any other ideas?

Have you got a big masonry project going on somewhere, like walls or floors? Are you sure the stone isnt {forbidden} ? Is the garbage dump active and easily accesible (they can behave oddly/conterintuitive if on edges of drops...)

It's not forbidden to my knowledge, I'll check. However, I do have a big masonry project outfront of my entrance, a floor just covering that area. It's not huge, but it's large. When that's finished I'll check back in if it still isn't working. Thanks :D

Check the orders screen and make sure dwarves are allowed to collect refuse from outside. Otherwise, they'll ignore everything outside of the fort proper.

The flooring might be the issue - stone chosen for use in constructions wont be touched by anyone other than the dwarf using it in the designated construction.

Most of the stone is inside; I don't care about stone outside ;D It probably is designated for use in the flooring, but we'll see. Thanks again ^^

I abandoned later, due to attack, and when I reclaimed, the stones in question were still labeled dump, and dwarves came over and dumped them almost immediately XD

Then I am 100% certain they were marked for use in the flooring. Moving stone to near where you are intending to build (either through stockpiles or dumping) gives a signifigant efficiency increase as well as avoiding lots of other issues, such as this one, and lots of job cancellation spam.
