Hiveable Creatures in the Caverns
« on: February 28, 2012, 06:37:00 am »

I was wondering if it would be possible to add a silk worm style creature that formed hives in the cavens and could be hived like bees to collect silk which could be processed like cave spider silk. I then want to make the silk magma proof so science can be done and also to keep miners safe.

I'm new to modding but I'm more asking is it possible than how do you do it.

Things that might not work:
-will the hives form in cavens
-can you get silk from them
-will the silk be useable in looms ect

Any ideas on whether this is possible?

You can easily make hive-vermin that spin webs.
However, even making their clothing magma-proof won't actually make the people wearing said clothes magma-safe. They'll still burn and melt to death if caught in magma.

Not sure as I have never tested it but in theory if you set the biome to be underground those worms should appear there.

You can, and I think you can even harvest the silk from hives by using HIVE_PRODUCT -tag

Yes, totally possible.

The only problem I see is with the underground part. But unless the game can't handle underground hives I see no reason why it shouldn't work as long as the biome refers to UNDERGROUND_CHASM

You know, they could teach maths like this at school. "There are 105 dwarves in a settlement. A goblin invasion appears and 67 die. Then a migrant wave..."

@Kipi Thanks I will start making it and see what works

@Ieb I think it's possible to total cover dwarves in magma proof clothes, however the temperature may travel through the silk and cook them, the only way to be sure is to check.

even with a 100% covering robe made out of fireproof material you'll still catch fire and burn to death...
the good news is that you can reuse the clothes afterwards!

Hm.. Maybe an interaction is in order, to change the creature into a duplicate with the magma-safe options on?

I can't seem to get the magma worms to form hives in the cavens, perhaps because there is no soil down there?

suggestions?
