How do I get food?
« on: February 27, 2012, 08:52:46 pm »

Yeah, I'm a bit stumped on this one. It forced me to retire an adventurer when my initial supplies ran out.

Is it possible to butcher corpses in adventurer mode or anything?

The wiki doesn't say how to do this.

You can butcher non-sentients with a sharp stone you make from the x menu.

You can buy it from the hundreds of vendors in town.

You can find whole sacks of plants in abandoned houses and shops. Just make sure to check for ownership before you take it.

If you can't find something else to eat after your initial supplies run out, you're doing something very wrong. Because it's everywhere, particularly in towns.

I can't find a single vendor in any towns. I really have no idea what I'm doing unfortunately.

Vendors are usually only seen in major towns.

Ok so for butchering the first thing to note is that the corpse needs to be of a large creature. You won't even attempt butchering if the corpse is small and thus, won't yield any meat. Press 'x' to bring up the menu where you can select butchering while standing on top of the corpse. You'll need some sharp tool - your starting knife or bladed weapon will do.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

And you have to hold the either hold the sharp weapon in your hand or have it lying on the ground on the same tile.

Afterwards the corpse is separated into pieces (among them the organs, meat as well as bones and skin).
Organs and meat can be eaten (with organs weighting only half of the meat),
the inedible pats on the other hands could be sold in stores in the city

Hit Q to look at your quest menu too, and move the cursor around to different areas, to see what's a town symbol versus other symbol. Hamlets and villages won't have any vendors at all. Towns, on the other hand, will have them packed on to every street. In the T travel menu, villages and hamlets can look deceptively big, but if you don't see a whole list of buildings showing up on the right side of the screen, you're not in a town. And you'll know you're coming up on a town when you can't run through fields anymore and the road ways are the only paths you can follow. That means you're surrounded by buildings.
