Peas in the bed: Uneasy sleeping
« on: November 10, 2007, 12:09:00 am »

I notice a lot of my dwarves are sleeping uneasily. I'm aware of the 4 spaces rule for bedrooms and workshops, but even some dwarves who are outside this buffer tend to sleep uneasily due to noise. Is there a new noise rule?

The only other possibility is the 8^3 cube of noise my mining might be causing, but even then...

Do you have workshops above your sleeping areas?  The same rules apply on the z levels.  Also, don't have training dwarves around your sleeping dwarves either, their bleeding and sparring also disturbs your dwarves.

Does travelling up or down a z level count as being one degree seperated from noise?

As far as I can tell, all non-pathed distances are calculated directly on the 3d plane.  So a workshop directly above a bedroom is 1 space away.  A lot of calculations in the game - most frustratingly, distance calculations for crafters to pick up materials - are absolute distances like this.  I know it's necessary to keep calculation time down, but still, in specific situations it can be a real pain in the ass.

Just build steps near your craft shops. The calculation works fine as long as they have up or down stairs go get to the material. You have the same problem if you leave walls between areas with the stone. They might have a stone 5 squares to the left with nothing in the way, but they'll go 500 squares around the map to get to the one thats 4 squares to their right and behind a wall. Just build your fort with the thought in mind that floors are walls, and stairs are openings in the walls  :)

What about sparring in the barracks?  Does that disturb sleep also?
I haven't been able to tell for sure when looking at thoughts of guys in there.
