Smart way to build mega projects
« on: February 26, 2012, 08:16:00 pm »

Im new to making mega projects, the one im doing right now is a pyramid from stoneware bricks.

but building the outside SUCKs, too much pressing of b>C>f >u>u>u>u>u>u>u>u>u>enter >:(

Is there a smart way of doing it, instead of this? And i can only imagine that the interior will be even worse...

You can make macros if it's really THAT big.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

There are a couple third-party Fortress Layout utilities that work by designing the layout in a program, then converting that layout into something that can be understood by DF's macro system. You can then run the macro within the game to designate the construction.

Not 100% sure that they work with building designations but they should (just more interim keystrokes by the macro, versus digging designations).

Also, not 100% sure if they work with the new release. They probably do, especially the ones that don't rely on dfhHack to interface with the game directly, but no guarantees.

I usually have enough going on around the fort that it doesn't get designated all at once, so I hardly notice the issue.  Plus I'm very patient.  In either case, above-ground constructions are extremely overseer-intensive, and macros go a long way towards alleviating the issue.

Exactly what i was looking for, although since they don't seen to let me choose the material, it might not work so smoothly as i had planned

Careful stockpiling and forbidding does it nicely.  Put one piece of obsidian near the building site, and then Shift+Enter and it'll select all obsidian.  Works especially well with towers, just put the preferred material near the stairs/ramps.

I'm planning on building a tower with the only foundation being the mountain-cliff it's going to be built off of. I.E. the Cliff's on the left, the Tower's on the right, connected to it by a bridge made of floors.

Ah, my dwarven heart beats with fierce pride for this.  I can't take it anymore!  I have to go do something profound.

I like putting a large stockpile of only the desired stone next to the construction site.  This allows you to have a few skilled masons do the building while a large number of peasants and pressers do the stone hauling.   Just make sure to remove stone hauling from any dwarf with a real job, as well as a few haulers for other hauling tasks, and also maybe widen the shaft to the mine, or even better, use an aboveground quarry, biome permitting.

If you're looking for tips I find that dwarfs won't stand on tiles that have suspended "build wall" designations on them.  This is especially handy when you don't want the idiots building on the wrong side of a wall.  Just create two rows of walls and suspend the outside row to make sure the morons don't build themselves out, great for making a safe area in caverns.

Of course it doesn't stop that one idiot weaver from running out and trying to grab all the webs to make silk out of, but it should help you stop idiot dwarfs from getting stuck on the outside of your big construction.

When I have that idiot dwarf run out to harvest webs they have a tendency to find the source of the webs the hard way, it quickly becomes a non-issue.

This is because I made the GCS very common.  I can expect to have 3-10 on my map (5x5 embark region) at any given time.

It greatly increases the FUN involved in the first cavern layer.
