TOTALLY just lucked out with a Vile Mist
« on: February 26, 2012, 02:01:10 pm »

So I have my miners digging out this surface cluster of Magnetite, right? When all of a sudden I get an alert for vile mist. It pops up right next to the miners. All of them.

Immediately I set to designating a burrow over the whole fortress, cover a generous portion of land over the cloud as restricted traffic, undesignate all the magnetite I was mining, and unpaused, hoping for the best.

Initially, everything was going well. Until the zombie falcon decided to say hi to my miners. All three of them back up and by this time the mist has SPREAD. The Falcon zeroes in on one of the miners and the others manage to skirt around the edge of the mist and to safety. The mist takes a turn for the lone miner, and I'm thinking 'Shit, I'm gonna lose the legendary one, aren't I?' Well, the miner backs up to the edge of the map, and with nowhere to go doubles back and greets the zombie falcon with a well placed pick in the face, dropping it in one blow. Then he dashes into the mist to get to the burrow I designated. My mind's filled with all sorts of horrors in store for him, primarily his skin melting off and him coming out of the mist as a skeleton.

All the mist does is make him thirsty. He wasn't in it long enough to get dehydrated.

Keep watch of him. The Syndrome framework has the capacity to have 'delayed effects'.

isolate him for a while. Is it possible that he was a vampire, and thus immune?

We hear a story of Urist McLucky and the first thing you guys do is mention "delayed effects" and accuse him of being a vampire.

I'm happy for you OP. All the mists I get bring the huskocalypse. Make sure to send your miner to clean off the crud and celebrate in the dining hall for a few seasons.

This is possible. Though vampires becoming thirsty? We might've just found a mist that does nothing harmful.

We have seen terrible, terrible things :P

Have we considered Urist here just not coming into contact with the mist?

We need to make a full body hazmat suit and test it by sending a Dwarf through the mist. For science!!

Nah, he for certainly went headlong into the thickest part of it. It took him a while, but he came out of it and all that happened was he was thirsty, and after he got a drink he went to sleep. He's back mining the very cluster that got him into that mess.

As for the vampire bit, would the mist turn him into one? I still have all my dwarfs, none of the migrants are spectacular in any way, and as far as I know nobody has long histories. However, it /is/ only year 8, going into 9. There wouldn't be many dwarfs with a long history, vamp or not.

Yeah, when a vamp gets injured, or hadn't had a drink in a while, he can show as thirsty.  If that miner is a blood sucker, he's going to go after someone as soon as he gets back to the fort from what others have posted.  Based on the OP description of what happened, however, I don't think he's a vampire.

Doesn't quite have the ring of heroics to it...

There's a tool floating around that can crack open a world and view all the randomly generated raws, like mists, FB, HFS, and all the "unique to a world" issues.
