Is charcoal the same thing as coal? I've read that the charcoal being produced by my furnace used in metal production but my dwarves don't seem to know where to store the charcoal, so I can't even try to do anything with it. What storage does it go in?

But it's still in the furnace building, and isn't selected when trying to make coal bars.

Charcoal is already useable coal, from wood burning.  Raw coal from the mountain can be turned into coal fuel.

But the dwarves won't put it in any of the storage yards I have, and won't use it while it's still in the furnace.

edit: Okay, so actually I don't know if they'll use it in the furnace (I was trying to make coal bars), but where is it supposed to be stored?

Strange.  They always ship my charcoal to my bars and blocks bin.  I even tend to put a little de-cluttering pile of bars/blocks right next to my furnace so passersby can clean up the furnace until someone puts the charcoal away properly.

Charcoal goes into bins in the bars/blocks pile.  You don't need bins though.

In my fortresses, I would have to say that yes, I do need bins. ;-)

Thanks for the help; I'm eager to gear up my dwarves with weapons in case something nasty wanders in out of the wilderness or penetrates my 3 stone fall traps by the river, and none of my dwarves know weaponsmithing, so I need them to get down on it.

eidt: new topic, this one is dead.
