Adopting Dogs

How do I get a dwarf to make a dog his pet?  An untrained dog is in it isn't a War or Hunting Dog.

So far as I know you can't *assign* a dog as a dwarf's pet, if that's what you mean. If you hit [z] and choose Animals, you can hit [enter] to make a dog "available" so that a dwarf can adopt it if he/she wants to.

Does this answer your question? This holds true for war/hunting dogs so far as the wiki states.

Interesting.  In my first fortress I had some dogs available for adoption for years and nobody adopted them.  In my current and second fortress however one of my dwarves likes dogs for their loyalty.  Do these traits affect whether or not a dwarf will adopt that type of animal?

I'm pretty sure they're related. In my current fort, I have had about ten foxes up for adoption for quite a while now, and not one of them has been taken. On further investigation, none of my dwarves like foxes for their cunning.

It certainly makes a big difference for cat adoption if the dwarf likes cats. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it affected adoption rates for the other animals too.
