A dive into Legends... Monom Rampartforded
« on: February 26, 2012, 05:38:36 pm »

So I genned a world, intent to have an adventuring experience.  Before I created a hapless heathen of war and destruction, I perused the massive library we generally refer to as Legends Mode, mainly to ascertain if the world had all the fun stuff to make a fun adventure.

My first string of research led me to Monom Dishmabatul, "Monom Rampartforded", Male Dwarf Necromancer.

His mother was Besmar Pagedhawks, one of the first of her kind, a fisherdwarf in the area of Slinglabors.  During her life, she killed two ogres, before finally being struck down by an ogress in the year 22.  Her corpse was built into a grisly sculpture in the same region of Slinglabors.

His father was woodworker Ast Giftwalled, who seemed to partake a short military career during which he fought a Roc and survive - it is important to note that he was attacked by the Roc, they fought, and he escaped, implying that he actively fought back.  Over his life he killed a goblin and 6 dwarves in Slinglabors, before being killed in they year 22 by an ogress and his body added to the gruesome sculpture - presumably the same as his wife's.

Monom himself suffered rather worse.  Born in the year 4, he was attacked by a series of creatures in the year 6 (2 years old) and managed to survive.  In the year 7 (3 years old), he was abducted by a goblin and imprisoned by The Bronze Dungeons in the area of Wickednumbers.  In the year 11 (7 years old, 4 years of imprisonment) he was further abducted by another goblin, imprisoned by The Spry Ticks in the region of Curlbad.  In year 15 (age 11, presumed 12 due to seasonal differences) he became a member of The Spry Ticks, integrating into his abducting civilization and becoming a cook, later marrying Datan Bookbranded.  In the same year as his marriage, he became the general of The Regal Scourge (presumably a very dapper military power).  The Regal Scourge is the goblin civilization to which The Spry Ticks is a part of, and owns The Dark Fortress of Curlbad.

Four years later, in the year 22 he became obsessed with his own mortality at the ripe old age of 18.  Three months later he lead an attack against Springlabors, his birthplace.  During this attack, both of his parents were involved, presumably the first time he had seen them since his abduction 15 years ago, but it's possible that he did not see them at all during the fight.  Both of his parents were killed - but not before his father killed one of Monom's goblin soldiers, and their bodies added to a gruesome sculpture that signified the goblin victory over the dwarves.  Monom attacked with a force of 60, composed mostly of goblins with additional support of trolls, ogres, and a significant number of dwarves.  Reg Sunkpost led the defense of 34 dwarves.  Monom lost many goblins and dwarves, but all 8 ogres survives, while Reg's force was completely destroyed.

In the same season, he dived to the depths of the earth, and came back with tame jabberers.

The next year of 23, Monom again attacked Slinglabors, this time in a crushing victory of 2 unnotable trolls and defeating the 27 dwarven defenders without incident.

For the next 5 years Monom led an attack every early winter, like clockwork, each with significantly less impact.  It can be assumed at this point that Monom felt Slinglabors sufficiently crushed, or else was distracted from his conquest, because after the last battle he was taught the secrets of life and death by Ber Bronzeglaze, an existing necromancer.  (It appears that Slinglabors was being assailed by 3 different civs during this time, a number of which mutilated bodies or impaled their fallen foes on spears - them being impaled on steel spears implies they used Slinglabor's own armament in this display.  Monom was the only to build a sculpture.)

Ber herself was one of the first of her kind, becoming the General of The Gates of Escorting (an unaffiliated dwarven civ) in the year 10, and in the year 13 was brought to the defense as a nearby goblin civilization assaulted them.  While suffering a crushing defeat, Ber survived, and made a journey to the depths of the world, where she tamed jabberers and returned with the knowledge of life and death.  The Skulls of Dust is a raw adamantine slab created by the deity Vucar, which Ber obtained, gleamed, and stored.  She spent the remainder of her time writing a series of unimpressive books, and as yet has done nothing impressive nor has she died.

Vucar is depicted as a rotting female dwarf and associated with death.  As of the year 150, she has two followers, Ber and another necromancer.  Assumed to be a very well-maintained secret and subject to very silent cult following.

Shortly after learning the secrets of life and death, Monom escaped from civilization and settled in Hatchettrusses, a necromancer tower founded by Ber.  In the year 50, 21 years after abandoning living civilization and at the age of 46, he took on an apprentice, Unib Twinklewires.  During his stay in Hatchettrusses up till the current date, he has produced numerous tomes.

Unib herself is slightly noteworthy, as she was the former queen on The Greatest Volcano (actual civ name, I shit you not) and managed to kill a handful of goblins before a gloom horror smashed her leg and she became concerned with her own mortality, thereafter becoming Monom's apprentice.  She was one of the first of her kind, and has not died.

Hatchettrusses currently contains 8 dwarven necromancers, 13 animated goblins, and 58 animated dwarves, along with at least 67 books and one raw adamantine slab of supernatural origin.

As a brief timeline:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Monom himself has no kills to his credit, although his army is accredited with 119 kills of dwarven origin.

Will begin cruising his books later, there's quite a collection he's produced and they must be sifted through...

Also wanna get my hands on that slab!

Monom has a cool story, true. But after the last patch stories like that are quite common. And since legends mode is flooded with great stories, getting a truly epic story is now possibly harder than ever. Oh well, enjoy your adventure. That slab sounds pretty sweet :]

I have the intense urge to beat a goblin's head with the slab...

Regardless, if nothing else, I hope this thread helps people realize the reason for worldgen slowdown.  Everything has become 20% cooler.  This fairly insubstantial world produced a dwarf who was abducted by goblins, taken in as their own, and lead a crushing assault against his former homeland and built his parents corpses into a statue.  He then proceeded to become a necromancer.

Check your legends, there's no telling what everyone is overlooking!

what does it mean that Ber "obtained, gleamed and stored" the slab? Is that a process? A typo? Something very dwarfy? Just curious, here, I know nothing of necromancers at this point.

I've also discovered the joys of legend mode recently.

Looking at a sect I noticed that the goddess churns out vampires like crazy and most of the cultists are connected in some way. They are brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers ... and one widow joined completely out of the left field. Her husband was killed a minotaur ... and that very same minotaur had slain another cultists' husband as well!

It was probably a coincidence but you can imagine that they found some kind of kinship there. you know? :D It's fun ... another sect had a mass-dropout one year but I never checked to see exactly why.

in one of my cults, the leader is married to the vampire king, and her mother was transformed into a (non new version) night creature.  was too busy finding goblin information to peruse that cult farther.
