Worldgen Starvation
« on: February 23, 2012, 06:02:05 pm »

Numerous races have huge amounts of starvation. Kobolds and goblins at least aren't going fully extinct but they might as well be outnumbered 10:1 or more by other sentients. Dwarves/elves/humans are losing about 3 people to starvation for every battle casualty or more. Other creatures have similar problems.

Question is what can be done about it. Are there particular parameters in the advanced generation that would help influence it? Certain population densities? Having stuff set for not needing food in raws I guess is an option but that just shifts the problem to possibly too overpopulated.  Ideas?

It's a bit ironic considering how easy it is to make food in fortress mode  :P

I know that the fix in past releases for goblins dying out was to remove them needing to eat. Not sure how overpopulated this would make things, maybe reduce birth rates?

Goblins not eating is now official. Well, they can eat, but they will never starve. At least, that's what's supposed to happen so if goblins are actually starving in worldgen, something's off.

very.... though snatched children can and will starve.  in the last version, i had to add no eat and drink tokens to humans to keep them alive.

prolly will this version of goblin fortress as well.

you're thinking of kobolds. kobolds starved to death almost instantly.

goblins have always made it okay for me atleast

If you run checks on the total populations goblin/kobold are always trivial in size. If you look at casualties from struck vs starved, starved tends to be so overwhelming for the world (talking about all races) that its almost insane. Every once in while a world gen will produce something that isn't a massive starvation fest but I haven't figured out why other than pure dumb luck yet. I'd like to find a way to adjust it that relys on something more repeatable.

Yes I checked legends earlier today actually and saw battles with hundreds of dwarves attacking less than 10 goblins. I also saw instances of goblin kings and queens straight-up starving to death... but goblins never starved to extinction.
