Dogs: Hunting vs. War
« on: November 09, 2007, 12:54:00 am »

What's the difference between a hunting and a war dog?  Both have proven useful, but in more or less the same way, from what I've seen: they kill stuff.

Hunting dogs are faster and I think stealthier; war dogs are tougher.

I go with two or three war dogs, as they seem to be a good early-game defense if you bring along some ropes.

AFAIK, hunting dogs only attack defensively (and in defense of their owner), while war dogs actively seek out targets

Does assigning Hunting Dogs TO hunters actually help their hunting at all?

I believe assigned hunting dogs attack their master's target, so they do actually help with hunting. I assume war dogs just attack anything in range.

Animals chained up are currently bugged to unchain themselves and chase after enemies that get too close.   Which ain't so bad, usually.

One thing to keep in mind, last version if the hunting dog killed something the hunter would not drag it back to the fortress. I don't know if it's fixed or not this version.

I had a hunter and a hunting dog kill and bring back things for many years. Until they met a cougar, and the hunter ran out of bolts. Then it was my carpenter who dragged their sorry carcasses back in to camp.

The game includes a sneak mode and ambush skill, which you can use quite effectively in adventure mode.  I think the idea with hunters and hunting dogs is that they develop their ambush skill, which allows them to sneak up on deer and other skittish animals.
