Migrants idling at the edge of the map
« on: February 22, 2012, 07:51:42 am »

What can I do so they enter the safety of my fortress? The path is free and the floor hatch is deconstructed just to be safe they can get inside.

That usually happens when there is no path into the fort. But you say there is, so I'm not sure. But check again, is there a proper stair leading to the former floor-hatch or whatnot?

There is definitely a way into the fortress because one of the seven migrants made it into it. The rest just idles and I guess they wait for some abominable vapor ...

Do you have a meeting area assigned? Perhaps try making another one?

This is really odd. Only burrowing the children helped me bring them to safety with their parents following. Next thing I unborrowed the children and right then all four children decide to take a walk near the thrips men corpses and the abominable vapor ... and now the children idel outside my fortress and nothing can bring them to move their asses inside.

I had similar problems with my first fortresses. In my case I think the fault was a too narrow path down to the meeting hall - my living complex was a few stories below ground and only reachable through a 1-tile wide corridor and a 1-tile stairway leading down a few levels. And that stairway would be a main traffic zone for hauling logs and plants and whatnot into the fortress. Lots of my dwarves were idling all the time in the meeting hall and migrants would lure around at the edges of the map. After digging out more generous access and adding some more stairways I was able to resolve the situation.

I've had it happen where I thought I had a stream or the like that was fordable, but it wasn't.  I built a bridge and they came on over.  If you have a river or something on your map, try building a bridge over it.
