can someone explain how mineral spawning in world gen works?
« on: February 22, 2012, 09:28:59 am »

looking at the wiki and the raws the various stone layers my fort has should contain certain metals but does not entire layers, stacked upon eachother without a single vein or cluster of any type of metal ore (only gems) that should contain metal, I've taken into account mineral sparsity, its high enough that when i open into a cavern there should be several veins of ore, also i've dug several shafts on different levels scanning for veins but not finding anything.

this would happen from time to time before, but it seems even more common in the new version, perhaps its bad luck but I would still like to know why there are barren levels of stone that should contain metals.

also the only metals I've been able to find since the new release are gold tetrahedrite and aluminum, I'd think the metal types are irrelevant but there seems to be an abundance of tetrahedrite in layers that contain otherwise no metal (but should?)

Mineral scarcity is 'high enough'? You realize you want to lower that number for more minerals, right?

I mean its at default level and the probability of minerals spawning is one I am accustomed to and have observed the averages of.

also, cobaltite and cinnabar also counts as metal. Als, some layers rarely contain metals even though their 'subset' like sedimentary could have some
metamorphic layers are especially bad with minerals or at least useful ones, and igneous intrusive yield only few weapon grade ores as well

do they? how does that work? I don't see any difference with them to any other stone, do you mean that as veins appearing in certain layers they take the place of metals that would have otherwise spawned in that layer had they not been in the raws? because from my knowledge of the game it doesn't work like that, or at least it didn't. from my experience with modding I thought adding more things to the raws increased the number of minerals found in stone layers even at the same mineral scarcity.

it means that if the embark says "shallow metals" it may have found cinnabar and cobaltite. Yes, that happened to me once, which is why I have taken them out of the raws

I meant more like stone layers, like entirely empty layers of phyllite even though it should contain galena and sphalerite, regardless of what it says on the embark screen.

i miss being able to see several stone layers down on the embark screen, instead of just "shallow metal" and "deep metal"
did removing cobalite and cinnabar from the raws increase the frequency of other metals in the layers in which they spawn?

Yes it did. Basically, the world inserts the metals and picks one from the available list. Since cinnabar and Cobaltite are no longer available, it chooses one of the other available ones. Ofcourse I still get a layer sometimes with just gems, it happens. It even happened to me when I set scarcity to 250 instead of 2500, since gems are also considered to be "minerals"
