Are children the new nobles?
« on: February 20, 2012, 05:07:51 pm »

They arrive in droves, they consume your food and drink and what do they do? NOTHING, not a Danny thing except act as the occasional snack for vampires or targets for goblin kidnappers.

They also claim almost every loose item of clothing and a fair few crafts.

The only thing they're good for is to stop your vampires from draining a useful dwarf of his life blood.

Anyone else feeling hatred towards the vile little urchins?

One of mine got bitten by a were-warthog, and suddenly became over 100 million years old. Therefore, they are not useless, they are entertaining.

But children will at least do SOME things... and they grow up to be useful!

That's my point though, the only thing they're good for is bait.

When they do finally grow up you have a dwarf with four cabinets full of clothing and usually almost no useful skills.

Not if I have any say in it.

But yeah, the children are irritating as hell right now, with the new hist fig migrants there's a lot more of them and married couples seem more fertile.

they are pissing me off.
I got a migrant wave of 56 people.
36 were Children.
and i'm just like "WTF do i do now?"
The craziest bit was that some of them were over twelve and children.

Its odd, my current fort (latest version) hasn't gotten a single child yet.  The only strange thing I did was increase the max population with the lazy newb pack.

I have 27 children and 93 total dwarves. The only good thing about this infestation of underage immigrants is that I won't be getting any native childers until my population cap gets hit and all but ten of the kids grow up, so at minimum I'll have 140 semi-useful dwarves before the sprogpocalypse really gets going.

If one of your favorite dwarves ends up on the wrong side of the law you can convict them.

Plus because they all hang around the meeting areas when the rest of your dwarfs are all working it's not too hard to dispose of a few. The only problem is how to convert tried and tested execution methods for mass utilisation, I suppose burrows could be useful.

Children are still susceptible to strange moods, I got 3 legendary stonecrafter children, also one of them seems to be cosntructing mechanisms for some reason, albeit the labor being turned off.

There are 2 problems with children right now

1) They follow their mother around and clog up the hallways. Go live in a nursery or something you idiots.
2) Because migrants are so numerous, they feel worthless.

Hopefully migrants get nerfed and you actually need to take care of your kids because they'll be your only way to replace deaths.

I've got this weird glitch where half of my migrants show up as children, regardless of age. Unless Toady changed it so that they become adults at 40 or something. Either way, they become peasants on their first birthday at my fort, so it's not that bad...

If you want to thin their numbers down a bit just make your meeting zone a danger room, problem solved.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.
