Proper disposal of the dead in Evil biomes
« on: February 21, 2012, 10:10:33 am »

So, when one of my dwarves died after vampire bit him I went through standard procedure and quickly had him sealed in a rock coffin so he wouldn't rise as a zombie in my haunted biome, learned my lesson from my last disastrous embark. Didn't stop him, though and now a zombie is scaring everyone away from the farms while all my militia can do is cut him up, wait around till he reanimates again and then cut him up again until he's too small to reanimate any more.

So once sieges and so on come in I'm going to need a way to quickly and properly deal with dorf bodies, while at the same time keeping a graveyard. Invader corpses and the like can be dealt with by immersion in magma but my dorfs deserve proper memorials and I don't want to use slabs, going through the menu to carve memorials for a specific dwarf is a pain in the ass. Individual sealable tombs for each dwarf, maybe? I would essentially end up with my own Undead Asylum.

Put corpse in coffin, build wall around coffin?

Have yet to play an evil biome, planning to after my current fort fails.

*Cue final jeopardy tune*

Its only a matter of time

The Atomsmasher to clean the remains? Don't forget to engrave memorial slabs, or they'll return as ghosts.

Which is exactly what I'm trying to avoid since slabs are seriously tedious to make, Toady needs to make the interface for choosing who to engrave better.

Usually bodies are revived before I can bury them. Just keep killing it till it gets buried.

Oh, seems they don't reanimate as long as they're not in a evil biome. My site has a streak of neutral territory between 2 evil forests, the corpses on that ground remain dead. Interesting.

Those are fun, you can use them to manufacture zombies. My vampire fort is a good biome with all the fluffy cuteness but if you throw something into the lake it comes back as a zombie.

Ahaha oh wow, didn't think of that. Right now I'm planning to build my proper graveyard in the neutral territory but create an underground undead asylum for enemy corpses and soon-to-be enemy corpses.

Neutral territory aside, you could also build your tombs with doors, that way you can lock them up immediately after the corpse is placed inside.

Ah, yes, I thought something was amiss. Now I see. There's not enough terrible things in the lakes.

Dumping the body into a pit would work, with the added bonus of having something to sacrifice prisoners to.

______   _D___     D = Dwarf
      | |          g = Goblin
      |g|          Z = Zombie

Thief:"Quiet kitty, Qui-"
Cat:"THIEF! Protect the hoard from the skulking filth!"
The resulting party killed 20 dwarves, crippled 2 more and the remaining 9 managed to get along and have a nice party.

Oh God that sounds so amazingly utilizable

(so good I had to invent a word)

It would be an orgasm if DF had the mechanics to allow us to actually make such a lake, but nonetheless, the mere possiblity of it is arousing.
