You don't really need to clean it, especially when there are a bunch of books on a first floor. Just sneak next to the entrance, reveal yourself and run, zombies will go after you, lur them as far as possible and sneak back. Might require couple of such runs, then there will be only couple of them left, when you sneak they can't see you at all, only necromancer can from some distance. Sneak in and grab some books, with titles related to death or immortality. One of them might give you necromancer powers.

There aren't any books on the first floor for me, I already cleared the first floor by killing the necromancers then their zombies to stop them reanimating, but that didn't seem to work for the second floor...

I'll try your strategy later, when I get back, thanks.

The way I did it was to draw them out, make sure youve got a crap tonne of small rocks and draw them away from the tower. When youve killed at the bodies, assuming theres no necromancer pick them up and dump them a bit away. If there are necromancers just keep circle around throw stones at them and zombies that get too close. I find doing it solo is better than with companions as they just add to the bodycount. When you get to the staircase run up to it and double back. If nothing follows you do the same with the next level. This should stop you getting ambushed by the ones on the top floor.

Also be aware only the slab gives you powers. The rest of the books in the towers are pretty useless from what ive seen

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: zombies don't attack vampires.  Vampires are much easier quest targets than necromancers are.  Become a vampire, then attack the tower.

I think necromancers can write books that also give you powers. Usually they read a slab previously, however.

I dislike the 'become a vampire' strategy. There must be some way to deal with the necromancer at the skill and fame level where you have been given a quest to kill a necromancer. Why would people tell you to go slay the necromancer if attempting means certain death for anybody who does not have legendary skill? Instead of being sent to kill a dozen or two dozen night creatures, I'm sent after the necromancer.

This time I attacked in full iron armor, only to find that zombies move at about 1200 speed and I couldn't outrun them this time. Last time I hit a tower I managed to kill the zombies and necromancer because it seemed the necromancer was a little faster than the zombies and ended up at the front of the pack. This time I was unable to outrun them more than a few steps, and every time I got in range I would autoroll around to avoid attacks, take more attacks of opportunity because I would roll toward the mob, then get knocked down and have to stand and try to move off. Only survived a couple mobbings before I was torn up.

So. What's the deal? Shouldn't I be sent to deal with a dozen or two night creatures, vampires and werewolves and such, before being sent to a necromancer tower? In older versions you wouldn't be sent to deal with a megabeast after clearing 4 or 5 bandit camps!

Necromancers aren't that hard, but they have zero margin for error.  Lead the zombies away from the tower, far away, and kill them one at a time.  Never fight two at once.  Watch the combat logs carefully and if you get knocked down stand up immediately or you're dead.  Once you've got a group down, lead another group out (If they have a necromancer, lead them to a different spot than the last one) and kill them.

Always look up and down the stairs before you travel them.  The game doesn't respect z-level very well, and zombies at the top of five flights of stairs will attack you every step you take.  Try as hard as you can not to fight in the tower, it's too cramped and you will get surrounded.

Blunt weapons are much better than cutting weapons.
