Infinite Population? (How to wipe a civ?)
« on: February 17, 2012, 02:11:47 pm »

Hey everyone.

I'm having a hard time understanding how populations work.
I generated a world with 500 max population for each race.
Then I went to a human town (that had 113 humans) and killed 106 humans.

Retired, went to legends, got the xml: there are now 118 humans at that town (it was 113 humans before I went there and murdered everyone), and on "civilized world" (which I suppose is the total alive pop of each race), there is 119 humans.

What's happening? People are just getting respawned indefinitely?

Is that "population pool" thing, this "MAX_POP" I defined as 500? So it will respawn humans until I kill 500 of them?

Help  :-[

Unfortunately there is and has been for quite some time an infinite supply of semi-existent nameless people to populate nations(the "population pool").  As a result whenever a town's populate is killed off in adventure mode, it will draw from this endless supply and repopulate the town.

As for MAX_POP, it only defines how many people can be living in the nation at any one time.  Thus, even if you kill everyone it will just draw that population from the "population pool" again.

It is possible for a fortress to kill so many migrants that no more come. In theory, the same should be possible in Adventure mode if you kill enough people. I doubt the entity populations are actually infinite.

Since we had issues with the animal population for a region getting killed off in fortress mode, I'd vote for non-infinite, as that seems to be the trend.

Yep, I'd like it to be non-infinite too. Or at least the game should provide an option to enable/disable the "population pool" or infinite respawn.
For me, it breaks immersion and makes the game looks like a toy or something.
I've been waiting for almost 2 years to things change back to how they were: you kill everyone, everyone is dead.

But of course, for some scenarios/challenges/projects/!SCIENCE!, getting infinite resources and test subjects people is useful/necessary.

If anyone knows if there's any way to disable this, I'd love to hear it. Otherwise, I'll have to suggest Toady to let we choose this :(

Population pools are a temporary state - the game is meant to be heading into making the entire population a "historical figure" and making all migrants and the like be historical figures, and it's only a few releases from this one, provided Toady doesn't go off on another tangent.

Interesting. The only thing barring me from having truly ridiculous amounts of fun (and Fun, and !!FUN!!) with the game is the ability to wipe out towns (actually, I don't like to kill EVERYONE... my current goal was to leave all civs with only 1 city and 7 civilians/no leaders. Then play Fortress Mode and see what happens. Even with auto-genned sieges/diplomats/merchants, it would be funny to see a new leader appointed - one that I ripped off his foot or pierced his lungs lightly in Adventure Mode).

I don't want to be one of those "OMG PLZ IMPLEMENT THIS FEATURE", it's just that I don't see it being hard to make a worldgen or init option to enable/disable population pools and respawns.  :-\

The population isn't infinite but the sheer amount of population is immense.

I've seen cities with a "Nameless" population in the tens of thousands.

So it is mostly a "good luck depopulating an entire city/town"

Is there anyway to check that number? All the numbers I configured and found were 'very' finite.

And tens of thousands is just too immense. I remember spending many hours trying to depopulate a town with no success..

Well doing by hand is not possible. If you kill 1 person by minute you would need 7 days to complete the task. And that is if they line up for the slaughter and you do it 24/7 without drinking eating or a break. Iirc the big 10K people towns are the capitals and Tradecenters and thus relatively uncommon.

Well one could start biological warfare. You could mod a syndrome/secret that turns people in ravenous monsters and later kills them of after they have passed the Syndrom (something like "rabbies"). If your average vector infects atleast 1.1 people you get a exponential killrate, even with  1.0 you could get a total wipeout if your target population isnt fast enough at repopulating.

edit: if the npcs would consume food andwater you could poison these sources. Another tangent would be to give pests like rats somesort of attachedsyndrome that does not kill them ... but iirc. Vermin blinks in and out.

Code: [Select]
Release 5

Changing populations, food use and other world gen stuff moved to actual play

4 releases away... (couple of years possibly)

Start with a dead world, one with one enemy civilization that has dominated all the others, or one with hordes of both megabeasts and fierce predatory life that will launch massive raids against the towns. This might help a mission of extermination.
