Giant Sponge is the New Carp?
« on: February 15, 2012, 05:45:42 pm »

I got unlucky and my river has two giant sponges in it.
Dwarves that aren't falling down the waterfall are panicking at the sight of these and jumping into the water.
It's killed half my military!

The fortress is well on its way into a tantrum spiral because of it.
You read that right: I am losing a fortress to two immobile sponges.

Sponges aren’t completely immobile as they can dodge when attacked but you’re right in that they won’t be coming on land to kill you.  They’re aquatic creatures so all you’ll have to do to kill them is divert the river and let them air drowned.  If those sponges are not near the river’s source just get a crew over there to start digging and prep for the controlled collapse that you’ll need to breach the river bed.

Then you can wait for a necromancer to show up and reanimate their corpses as unstoppable, immobile killing machines.

Since they're mostly immobile, can sponges just appear at any time, or can they only be generated at embark? Oh, and do they have an underground version?

I love these things!

giant sponges can kill things you want them to kill. maybe it's possible to force invaders to run by them.

There is always that seldom used travel restriction option.  Paint that area off with high tolls.  *shrug*  Thanks for the tip, I'll keep my eyes open for Sponges, too.  Sincerely, Knutor

I don't think it will do any good.  Based on what I'm reading in other threads, sponges are nigh indestructible since they lack vital organs.  Air drowning, cave ins and magma are probably the only solutions.

Why bother killing them? Construct an elevated platform over looking them and use the sponge as a target to train your marksdwarves.

Would catapults work? If so, I'd use them too.
