I watched a zombie dwarf tear off a girls dress and hit her with it so hard it became lodged in her skull.

90% of my adventurers that don't make it to some boss creature die via "I used to be alive like you but then I took an arrow to the middle spine".

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I've lost at least 3 adventurers thus far due to archery.

Mind you, they were all rather realistic deaths. I wouldn't expect to be alive after 3 or so arrows piercing my torso. Or one through my brain. I'm okay with losing an adventurer here and there as long as we get some means of mitigating Sudden Arrow Death Syndrome (SADS. Proper usage: "I caught the SADS") at some point.

Maybe shields could be used to block arrows?... I mean, they block dragon fire.

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

They do block arrows, assuming you've got some skill in shield use.

yeah, give your adventurers more shield skill, at least adequate, and you will be able to block the first few arrows, giving you enough time to bullrush the ranged enemies.
