Need some help finding some music
« on: February 10, 2012, 11:21:16 am »

I know there is a music thread already, but this is a specific request for more music of a certain kind, and I feel that this would just get buried in the other thread.

I'm trying to find more music that is just ... very, very, depressing.  Music that could either just make you feel depressed or the kind of music you want to listen to while depressed and you just want to sit with that feeling for a while.

I don't have my music collection with me, but off the top of my head I can think of two songs that would be near or at the top of my list:

"Another Grey Day in the Big Blue World"
-Maaya Sakamoto, off the album "Easy Listening".  It's in English, so don't worry about not being able to understand the lyrics.

"Hurt"
-Nine Inch Nails, don't remember the album right now.  (Although the Johnny Cash version is pretty good too)

No links, but I imagine you could find one or both on Youtube or elsewhere.

Thanks in advance for reading/contributing!

I don't know if it's the same for you, but these songs capture that feeling for me or is the music I listen to when having that feeling.

Papercut - My Melody
When The Clouds - The Dawn And The Embrace
Nils Frahm - Ambre
The Mountaineering Club Orchestra - The Voyage

The "These Boots" album by Due West.  It's my "breakup music" CD, largely because some of the songs make me cry and some of them make me feel better.  Which ones do what depend on the day.

Though this may be due to personal issues or just in context of the game itself, I also find that a couple of songs from the MGS4 soundtrack usually make me bawl:

Love Theme
Father and Son

Mostly the first one.  I'm kind of wondering if these selections are more based on the things that I tend to be depressed about than depression itself, though.

The genera you want is called 'Post rock' and every song in it is heart breaking, always, no matter what. This shit makes emo music look like rainbows and hot sugar injections.

Mogwai - Friend of the night

Hey, I listen to depressing music all the time!

If you don't mind the vocals then I would suggest to you the "Depressive, suicidal" black metal subgenre, aka DSBM:
Lyrinx - Isolation
Miserere Luminis - Senectus
Sombres Forêts - La Nuit

I'd also recommend some neofolk music which uses folk instruments and such (Some of singing might also take a bit of getting used to):
Tenhi - Sees (especially the second half of the song)
Nebelung - Ich würd es hören
Forseti - Dunkelheit
Vàli - Et Ensomt Minne (Not so much depressing as it is mindfuckingly beautiful)

Most neofolk is supposed to be lyrically about nature and stuff like that, but sometimes they veer off into depression.
If any more come to mind, I'll be sure to let you know.

edit: For video game soundtracks, this is pretty damn depressing.

A similar sort of thing, though entirely instrumental: Hypothermia's Skogens Hjärta. You used to be able to download it for free from his website but I guess you can't any more.

(Thanks for sharing Lyrinx, by the way, I haven't heard of them before but that song's fantastic.)

Along the lines of what Max suggested, A Silver Mt. Zion and MONO are some pretty great post-rocky stuff.

If you're looking for something to make you feel alone I would suggest any song that has a lot of empty space and hollow sounds in it. It'll make you feel more alone.

Hungry Ghosts - Snake (not the UK band, this one disbanded)
Portishead - Roads
Portishead - Mourning Air

I'd understand if you didn't like any of these. I listen to some fairly odd music.

Silent Hill 3 actually delivers a TON of amazing tracks. I think the OST is what really started turning me into a fan of vidya game music, over traditional music.

Sickness Unto Foolish Death - Akira Yamaoka

Please Love Me, Once More - Akira Yamaoka

Never Forgive Me, Never Forget Me - Akira Yamaoka

[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LvEj01NBmQ]I Want Love - Melissa Williamson[/url]

Dance with the Night Wind - Akira Yamaoka

And here's some Silent Hill 2-

Promise - Akira Yamaoka

Null Moon - Akira Yamaoka

Let's see...what else I got....

Worry About You - Ivy

Psychedlic Soul - Scott Matthew (Ghost in the Shell SAC)

Just a thought too, you might get more responses if you add the kind of music want (moody, whatever) to the title. :)

Well let's see...
Zulf's Theme - Bastion

I'd also like to mention Zia's Theme as it's kinda downbeat, and I like it, but it's not really depressing.
I really like Exile Vilify - The National. Because it's downbeat, but really kinda upbeat too (in case you can't tell, most of my experience with music comes from games).

But that's stuff's not really, truly depressing is it?

Mad World by Gary Jules is.

Dirge for the Planet - Firelake is a favourite of mine. I also like the piano version, although it's rather hard to hear the lyrics in that one... not that I can really understand them anyway.

Then there's Alone With You (Dying to See Your Face) - Foreground Eclipse
I can't remember who on this forum originally linked me to this, I want to say it was Janet, or maybe Ein... Yeah, I think it was Ein. Anyway, thanks to Ein for that one.

Yeah, that's the end of my morose music collection.

Ah yes, shame on me for forgetting Mad World. If Donnie Darko made you depressed, that song is probably what pushed you over the edge.

Not sure if Kongregate Collabs exist anymore but you nay want to search for Fall From Heaven and The Music Box. Especially The Music Box.

Beautiful beautiful song. I've always loved the video he made for it as well.

But I myself don't tend to listen to depressing music, even though it is mixed into my playlists I suppose. Progressive music tends to be more upbeat then melancholy. The Division Bell by Pink Floyd is pretty much their saddest album, just sounds like Gilmour wants to cry while singing sometimes. Also it's mostly about how they're old and how things won't ever be the same with Pink Floyd, in a nutshell, so if you're a fan of them that's a nice one to listen to! :]

Actually, I remembered a classic King Crimson song that's really depressing in retrospect:
King Krimson- Epitaph
