Not Able to Assign Jail for Justice
« on: December 10, 2007, 11:53:00 am »

Title says it all. I have an appointed sheriff and a tin cage, I can make a room, but every time I hit "j" to assign it for justice use it goes back to the previous menu and doesn't do anything. Also, dwarves and animals seem to like hanging out in that room, do they think its a zoo or something? I do beleive I had a cow in one of the cages once, but I let them out a while ago.

That sounds like a bug. Try moving your save files, reinstalling DF (as in delete the folder and run the app again), put the world and save file back in and see if that fixes it.

I thought this would work to, but a friend of mine with a totally different install encountered the same thing

I had this very same problem earlier, build a chain or rope in the room and enable the jail from that instead, that worked for me and the cages show up in the justice screen.

I never use cages, only ropes so I wouldn't know if I have the same bug.
Advantage of chains: you can build a bed and a booze stockpile next to it for your criminal to use.

From what I can tell, assigning justice use from cages works just fine, other than a poorly-worked interface. When you hit j once, it looks like you open a menu and have to hit j again to turn justice on, but in fact justice is already on.
