Author Topic: Sadness from losing a friend inversely proportional to number of living friends  (Read 1424 times)

As said in the title, the amount of sadness a dwarf gets from losing a friend or relative should be inversely proportionaly to the number of his friends and relatives who are still alive.

Hence, your extremely popular social dwarf will get over the deaths of one or two friends relatively easily. But when Urist McDwarf's ONLY FREND IN THE WURLD snuffs it, he is going to need some serious counselling.

Thief:"Quiet kitty, Qui-"
Cat:"THIEF! Protect the hoard from the skulking filth!"
The resulting party killed 20 dwarves, crippled 2 more and the remaining 9 managed to get along and have a nice party.

Not really sure what to say... +1!
Perhaps dwarves should get different amounts of feelbad depending on how close they were to the deceased, but that should most likely wait for the 'personality rewrite' that's planned for somewhere down the track.
I think this suggestion would do nicely in the meantime. :)

This one's not easy to search for (one of the terms that did turn up results was "number friends"), but it's been suggested and discussed before:

People have also suggested other complementary ways for social circumstances to mitigate bad thoughts from deaths of friends, e.g. consolation at funerals.

I knew I had written something, and I just needed the keyword "liability", so there:

I actually found that one, but ending up omitting it because it didn't explicitly mention a direct numerical link between the number of friends and the severity of the bad thought.  But yeah, thematically very similar.

You should merge all those threads together so that it can be discussed in context.

Not sure if you're serious, but I can't merge threads as I'm not a moderator.

This'll get abused by people making dorfs friends with ALL OF THE FORT.

>Then kill half of the fort, being left with dorfs kept happy by their friends and not caring about death anymore.

As well not all the threads need to be merged anyhow.

Some threads while being on the same topic go at suggestions in entirely different ways.

For example you can find topics on artifacts, what exactly artifacts should do, how artifacts should be made, the mechanics for artifacts to appear in world generation, as well as the possibility for artifacts to be made by not dwarves.

The moods of dwarfs are currently very unstable. It would be nice if a dwarf with more friends and pets would not feel so bad. After all, they would be consoled by others. Also its much easier to get over the death of your best friend when surrounded by your wife and children. Its just weird when my dwarfs that have everything to live for commit suicide because the one useless bum was crushed under a draw bridge.

Enemies or other annoying peers should affect this too. Spiteful dwarves could be overjoyed at the death of a hated enemy, but much nicer dwarves might still mourn the loss of a fellow dwarf regardless of the bad blood between them.

That "useless bum" as you call him attended all the parties and was always a friendly face. He always had time for Urist and was able to help him with all his problems. How dare you call him a useless bum!

Technically though you would need a LOT of friends not to feel "so bad".

You just have to lose 10% of all your friends to be decimated.
