Magma Pipe Refilling Speeds
« on: February 08, 2012, 10:24:39 am »

The wiki leads me to believe that magma pipes (pools) refill themselves.  Do they refill themselves all the way up to the top level that they originally go to?  How quickly do they refill?  Can I pump magma out more quickly than they refill?  If I want to be chugging out a huge amount of magma up to the surface then how many levels below the top one should I chunt it out from? 3 layers down?  4?  10?  Woof woof!

Yes
SLow, might take a year if you drain it to much
Surely, you can even pump them dry, I think( don't do that)
I think 5-10  layers is a good number.
Also I think someone devised a specialiszed way to tap magma pipes, someone 'll probably link to his plans soon.

In general, you want to tap your magma source at the lowest point possible - volcanoes and magma pools will gradually refill upwards (it'll spawn small columns of magma at the surface), while the magma sea itself will only refill from the map edge.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

well they're not pressurized so surely it'd be the same as tapping the magma sea?  I usually tap the sea a couple of levels under where that part of the sea has access to the edge of the map so it definitely can refill back up to 7s immediately for the quickest flow up the pump stack.  Speed of flow up pumpstack and infinite source are priorities.  All my previous projects have failed because I keep fucking up those bits.  Must not fail again!!!

Don't know your goals, but if you're going to be needing large qty, it may be worth making a reservoir at high z-levels, and pre-filling it.
It can be a buffer, refilled between uses.

I've had the best success (with natural obsidian mega structures and magma cannons) with volcanoes at the z-level just above the magma sea, which finally makes sense to me now that I see Quietust's post.

Well I wouldn't call it a mega structure.  Just a structure.  104x77x9 dimension wise.  And a lake.  And for surface furnaces.  I've got a pipe that goes from the sea (at -130) to the 1st cavern (at -38).  I don't think I'll need all of the pipe...
