What profession do you need to build supports? I have had support jobs going for the longest time, (1 season+) but nobody builds them.

I think maybe wooden supports are arch. + carp, although doing [q]/[t] on the building plan should mention the skill needed.  Maybe it is doing it improperly?

as far as i could tell the supports were just propped up without being built... either that or nobody ever bothred to deal with them.

also if i remember correctly pressing q did nothing on them

Building supports is sometimes pretty low on the priority list.  Recently I've taken to trying to have at least one non-injured person idling at any given time, so I can always respond to something I need done immediately by using [v][p][l] and issuing the orders while the game is paused.
