DF Suggestions / Forum Issue with Avatar Images
« on: October 30, 2019, 11:32:21 am »
Sorry, this isn't DF-related, but I was worried it wouldn't be seen by Toady or Threetoe if I stuck it in the General category.

I just had to change my avatar image (turns out Photobucket isn't free anymore so they'd blurred my old one) and it wasn't accepting the link no matter where I hosted it. Finally I figured out why: it only accepts http, not https. Since almost everything defaults to https now, this is likely to stump quite a few people (took me about 20 minutes of fiddling to figure it out). If it can't be set up to accept https, perhaps a note could at least be added to the edit forum profile screen warning people of this little quirk?

DF Gameplay Questions / Weapon Trap Components Not Showing In List
« on: June 12, 2019, 12:54:19 pm »
I keep having this problem, not sure if it's a known bug or if I'm missing something... When I try to create a weapon trap, most of the time there are very few trap components shown in the list, even though I know I have loads of them in a stockpile. The components are unused, unmarked for task, not forbidden... Sometimes they show up, sometimes they don't, and it makes building weapon traps consistently an absolute nightmare. Am I missing something?

EDIT: I think I figured it out. Looks like the trap components were in a bin in a weapons stockpile, and every time the bin was marked because someone was coming to grab something from it, it removed all the trap components from access as well. Made a trap-components-only stockpile now and it's working better.

DF Gameplay Questions / Aira's Dwarf Fortress Mini-Tuts
« on: June 09, 2019, 01:27:25 pm »
I've started a new series on my YouTube channel consisting of short tutorials on specific aspects of the game. I did this once before with the Minecraft modpack Sevtech: Ages and it was pretty well-received, and I think DF could really use something like this for newbies who prefer to watch a video rather than read a tutorial. I'll be adding new ones as often as I can manage, probably around once a week at least. My hope is that I'll do my part to help newcomers better understand the intimidating interface and mechanics by breaking it into small chunks. All videos are done on a vanilla copy of DF with no plugins or launchers.

Check out the playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVn_gKZIx41Un39T7zgR7NZbN5-Ct7_HQ

I've also started doing the occasional "teaching stream" where I play the game very slowly and describe in detail everything I'm doing, also taking questions from the audience. I'll try to remember to post here when I am going live, but the most sure-fire way is to subscribe to my channel and/or join my Discord server (link to that in the descriptions of each of my videos). Previous streams are also always added to my "stream archives" playlist.

I know how scary DF can be when you first start. Never fear, new players! We'll break it down for you. And it's absolutely worth the learning curve. :D

Creative Projects / Aira Plays Games: EVENT STARTED!
« on: April 21, 2019, 12:25:09 pm »
Hey everyone. It's me, Sappho. Except now I'm called Aira everywhere but here. I know I'm not too active on Bay12 these days, but man, I still consider this place to be my internet home. I started my online storytelling career here, spinning tales of dwarfish prisoners and mad scientists back in the early days of DF. Now I'm on the YouTubes, and I'm doing pretty well! Some of my dorfy friends from here are already following my channel, and a handful are even hanging out on my Discord server. But I'm here to ask - nay, to beg! - for just a few more to join in.

Why now? Well, as of this post, I'm only five (5) subscribers away from 1000. And when I hit that mark, I am prepared to unleash an epic event that I've spent the last several days planning. I mean, like, nonstop, for several days now, it was all I thought about. It's ready to go now. I just need help getting over that line.

If you love DF (and I know you do), you're very likely to enjoy most of my videos. Some of them are creative storytelling, and these days most of them are reviews, critiques, and spotlights of indie games.

And even if you aren't into any of that, you might be interested in this: the event I'm preparing to kick off is a mini-ARG with 15 game keys as prizes at the end. Nice games. Games you folks are likely to enjoy. This is the only place I'm announcing the ARG in advance. Because you, my fellow dorfs, are special, and I want to make sure anyone interested has the chance to join in.

I hate begging for subscribers. I don't normally do it. I don't even do the "please like and subscribe" nonsense at the end of my videos. But this is special, my friends. So if just five of you are willing to sub, or get a friend or two to sub, I can finally unleash this project of mine and the butterflies currently twisting my stomach into knots of anxiety and anticipation can go take a nap. :D

Take a peek. Thanks so much!

Aira Plays Games

EDIT: THAT'S 1000! Thanks so much to all of you who subbed. The game is now live - check out my channel with the link above to get started!

Hello everyone! I'm doing some streaming this weekend to try to raise some money for the Take This campaign. I'll be streaming Psychonauts (thematically appropriate!) and for the first time I'll be using a face cam. I won't be completing the game this weekend, but I'll get through as much as I can. I have some fun incentives and milestone events planned, and it should be a good time for all involved. Everyone is welcome, and of course any signal boosting would be massively appreciated. You can share the links or just retweet my announcement tweets (@airaplaysgames on Twitter).

The stream will be on YouTube: www.youtube.com/airaplaysgames
You can get info on the charity here: http://www.takethis.org/about/faq/
Here is a list of the rewards and milestones: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QwHBaZDMOSscYvOdFDD1Zy3X1sRIGQkjd-ErpnUOlIE/edit?usp=sharing
Here is the donation link, if anyone wants to donate even though they can't make the stream: https://tiltify.com/@airova/its-dangerous-to-go-alone/donate

Thanks everyone! Here's hoping I manage to reach and exceed the goal I've set!

Creative Projects / Seeking Artist for My First Game Jam!
« on: July 22, 2017, 02:26:58 am »
Literally, it's called My First Game Jam: https://itch.io/jam/my-first-game-jam-summer-2017

I've teamed up with a programmer. I'm doing the writing and design, and probably basic sounds (though if a sound designer wants to jump on board, they'd be welcome!). We don't need anything fancy for the graphics, any 2D style should work, and we really don't need too much, anyway. It's a simple game. The jam starts today and we're both getting to work on our parts with placeholder graphics, but we'd be super pleased if any of you lovely folks wanted to jump in and join us! Take a look at the game description and let me know if you are interested.

Creative Projects / Daily Doodles
« on: March 19, 2017, 02:36:59 pm »
Trying to draw every day? I know I am. Failing miserably at that goal? I know I am. Therefore, a daily drawing prompt thread. I will try to add a new prompt every day. Draw/paint/doodle something and post it. You can be a master artist or just as bad at this as I am (or even worse, theoretically!). That's... That's it? I'll also be posting my drawings on this blog here where I post drawings.

I will be using random generators to come up with most of the prompts. A wide variety of excellent ones can be found at http://www.seventhsanctum.com, if you are looking for more of these sorts of prompts. I'm focusing on surreal, odd, unusual, and funny things as much as possible, because that's what I like to draw!

Life Advice / Dedicated Minecraft server for only 2 people?
« on: December 10, 2016, 05:39:29 am »
My mom and I are looking to switch from laggy long-distance LAN play to getting a server we can hop on whenever one of us has time. But it's very confusing. I've never bought/run a server before. Neither of us can host it ourselves. My internet isn't fast enough and my mom refuses to leave electronics running all day.

I've found a huge slew of different hosting services. The ones with good reviews tend to be expensive, as expected. But there's only 2 of us. We don't need it to be great. It needs 4 GB of RAM because we're using a pretty heavy-duty modpack. Location should be in Europe since my internet is fairly slow. She's in the US but has a great connection so I'm thinking she should be okay.

So... Where should we go? We can't afford $40 a month for a highly-rated host. We could do $10-$15 a month, but all the ones with 4 GB of RAM at that price have awful reviews. Is there anywhere we can go to get a very small private host at a good price?

Thanks!

Life Advice / Permanently changing diet without getting sick?
« on: July 28, 2016, 05:41:05 am »
When I was younger, I had that kind of metabolism that made most people hate me (or accuse me of being anorexic). I was CRAZY thin and I ate ALL the time. And not healthy food. Oh, no, no. Fast food, chips, soda, ice cream... Just absolute garbage, all the time. And I was always thin. Always hungry, in fact.

Now I'm 31, and a few years ago, my body changed. It wasn't gradual, either. Within a week I went from Olive Oyl to not being able to button my pants and having to go buy new clothes. I am told this is known as "getting older", an apparently irreversible process.

I'm still far from fat. But I still have super thin arms and a tiny head, so the fat that's built up in my hips, stomach, thighs, and butt really stands out. I don't like it. I'm trying to lose a bit of weight. I know I'll never be as thin as I used to be, but I'd like to slim down a little bit. I try to exercise, but due to various health problems mostly related to breathing, joints, and tendons, my ability to exercise is severely restricted (by doctor's orders). I play Kinect Sports and Dance Central 3. I do sit-ups and various simple exercises at home that don't cause me any damage. But they're really not enough to make up for a high-calorie diet. I need to eat less.

I've been trying to eat healthy for the past year or so. I eat a shitton of vegetables every day - I always have. I love veggies. Great big salads, steamed veggies, roasted veggies, all kinds of veggies. I have switched from eating eggs and buttered toast for breakfast, to eating oatmeal. The bread I eat is dark and full of seeds. I cook at home as much as possible, and when I have to order food, I always go for something low in salty fatty stuff. I very rarely eat meat - it's expensive and I prefer beans, tofu, etc. I don't use salt at all - the only salt I get is what's already in the food I eat (bread, etc.). I try to snack on nuts and raisins instead of sweets. When I pack a snack to take to work, it's apples and carrots and cucumber. I drink green tea with no sugar added to it, or on rare occasions, black coffee, and tons of water.

I am, without a doubt, still getting plenty of calories and nutrition. Today, for breakfast, I had two small pieces of dark toast with peanut butter and a cup of plain full-fat yogurt with chia seeds in it. Between breakfast and lunch I downed an apple, a carrot, and half a cucumber, all cut up into manageable pieces for me to much on while I worked. For lunch I had leftover roasted vegetables and tofu - a pile of roast potatoes, peppers, carrots, zuchinni, and mushrooms, along with a big slab of fried tofu which I cooked up and tossed on there this morning to make the lunch more filling. There was a LOT of olive oil in that lunch, and it was mostly potatoes and tofu. All together, this should be more than enough nutrition to get me through until I leave work in a few hours. I'm not running around, here. I'm sitting at a desk staring at a computer screen, literally all day. And based on the current size of my gut, I know I'm getting plenty more nutrition than I need.

And I am STARVING.

I'm so hungry it's making me dizzy. It's giving me a headache. I can't concentrate on my work. All I can think about is how badly I want to eat. It's always this way. All day, I'm hungry. I fantasize about french fries and hamburgers and ice cream. I'm so hungry I can't do my job. It seems that until I eat something unhealthy - fatty or sugary, generally - I never feel satiated, no matter how much healthy stuff I eat. Presumably, after so many years of eating crap, I'm addicted to the fat and sugar - but even after a year of trying to give it up, it still won't stop. Inevitably, at least a few times a week I cave and eat something really bad for me. I feel like it's undoing all the healthy eating, and I haven't managed to lose a single bit of weight. But if I don't do that, I can't even function.

I have to be able to do my job. It is a job of the "thinking of new ideas, solving problems, being creative on demand" variety, and I can't do it if I'm dizzy or have a headache or can't concentrate. I'm under pressure to meet deadlines. In the end, I often have to give in and just eat a candy bar or something, just so I can get my work done.

Does anyone have any advice, here? I really do want to get healthier. If it were simply a case of "gotta feel hungry in oder to get healthier", I could deal with that - but the hunger interferes with everything in my life. The hunger screws up my head, and I need my head to be working.

I am not interested in a short-term diet, a fad diet, or some "quick fix". I know that in order to be healthy and look good, I need to find a permanent way of eating which I can keep up forever. But I keep trying and failing. I think I need some help.

I know it's far from a perfect program, but I've been using the Google Fit app on my tablet to keep general track of my exercise - how long, how many steps/km, and (very) roughly how many calories I burn. Yesterday the program updated itself and I have no idea what I'm looking at anymore.

Apparently you can no longer track activities while you do them. It will still automatically track walking, but you can't start an activity and time/monitor it - you can only add it after the fact (providing much less information). Basically, the overwhelming majority of the functionality has been stripped away, leaving just a simple "this is how many minutes you've exercised" and a vague summary of exercises you've done "recently". It does seem that you can still dig up the info on calories burned and steps taken, but it's hidden away in several menus and presented in a very confusing way, basically totally useless now.

Anyone else facing this unexpected frustration? Google Fit has never been a super accurate program by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a good motivational tool for me to be able to time my exercise as I do it. Due to various health issues I'm severely limited in how much exercise I can actually get and the types I can do, and it was really helpful to be able to push a button and have it timing me, telling me roughly how many calories I'd burned, etc. Now that's gone.

So I guess I'm hoping someone either knows a way to get ahold of the previous, un-destroyed version of the program, or knows of an alternative fitness tracking program that provides the same functionality. I want something to track when I walk (which is a lot), both distance and time (preferably showing my route on a map as well), as well as being able to time and track other exercises as needed. And if anyone has any idea what on earth the Google Fit dev team was smoking when they decided to gut and ruin their program completely, I'd be interested in that information as well.

Life Advice / Very old scars suddenly hurting?
« on: May 21, 2016, 12:42:25 pm »
I've got a couple of old scars on my arm - about 16 years old, actually - which have suddenly started hurting over the last few days. I've heard of this happening to scars that are a few months or even a couple of years old, but it seems odd that this is happening now. The scars haven't changed since I was a teenager.

At the same time, I've been having a lot of soreness in my knees lately. Now, this may well be simple "getting older" pains (oh god am I already old enough for that?), but the fact that it was happening at the same time as the scars on my arm were hurting made me wonder if there was some link. I did injure my both knees about ten years ago playing rugby, though I never found out exactly what the injury was because I refused to go to the doctor. I just stopped playing rugby and limped for a few months until the pain went away. It seems likely that there may be some kind of scar tissue in there. Is there anything (changing weather, hormonal changes, etc.) that might cause scar tissue around the body to be sore? Although if so, why don't my wrists and ankle (all full of scar tissue, wheeee!) hurt?

I know this probably sounds like a ridiculously analytical and nitpicky question, but, well, that's the type of brain I've got. I'm not at all worried about it, but it's interesting, a thing is happening that I don't understand, and I want to know WHY. And if there's anywhere on the online full of people who love analyzing random information for no good reason, I figure it's here. Hooray! Any insights?

I've got a new series! I know I haven't finished all my other series, but I'll bounce back and forth and continue everything when I can. I've wanted to do this one for a while. It's Life in the Woods: Renaissance, with the ruins mod tweaked so that the world is packed full of ruins, and a bit of a story that I'm an anthropologist trying to learn about the people here and their history, and what happened to this planet. Also just surviving with the monsters and the hunger and all. And my colleague should be on the planet somewhere, if I can find him...

Life Advice / Alcoholism: Is This Actually True?
« on: February 25, 2016, 01:19:31 am »
I keep hearing that alcoholics (that is, people who are physiologically addicted to alcohol regardless of how much they drink - not people who simply drink a lot or all the time) can never be "moderate" drinkers. That because of their body's reaction to alcohol, once they quit, they can never have another drink again.

I've also heard seen some more recent articles suggesting that some alcoholics can actually drink in moderation if they're careful, though ones who used to be heavy drinkers probably can't.

I always heard that the reason an alcoholic can't even have one drink is that the one drink will immediately restart the addiction, and if they, for example, have a single drink and then want to stop again, they have to go through some form of withdrawal again. But now I'm wondering if that's misinformation, and the reason people say alcoholics shouldn't start drinking again is because of the danger that one drink will lead to more and they'll wind up drinking too much.

So my real question is, if an alcoholic who has never been a heavy drinker (averaging 1-2 drinks per day for some years) eventually realizes that despite their moderate drinking level, they are addicted, quits, and goes through weeks of withdrawal, later wants to have an occasional drink, will they have to go through that withdrawal again? Or are they fine as long as they don't drink too much or too often? Assuming that they have the willpower to do so.

Life Advice / Tablet purchasing advice: Update - Wifi problems
« on: January 12, 2016, 11:10:57 am »
I've been persuaded that, despite my hatred of touch screens, I need to get a tablet. It will primarily be used for video calls on Skype (video only - sign language conversations - so audio doesn't matter but video quality does) and some games. I know that I want Android, and I know I don't want anything super expensive. I'm hoping not to go over 2500 or maybe 3000 kc - I give you the price in local currency because I already know where to buy it, and they have everything online:

https://www.alza.cz/tablets-google-android/18852425.htm

(It should be in English - if not, click the flag in the upper-right corner and change it.)

I really don't know what I should be looking for. I suppose the most important thing is a decent-quality camera, though I suspect that will cost me. I have no idea how to judge the quality of cameras though. I know cheap cameras have a really blurry picture when you move quickly, and that would be really annoying for sign-language video calls. Can anyone make any recommendations? On instinct (never having owned and hardly ever having even touched a tablet or smartphone), I'd probably buy an Acer, since my computer is an Acer and it's been excellent with zero problems since I bought it. But I have no idea if their tablets are such high quality.

I hope to buy one within the next couple of days. Any and all advice is most welcome. Thanks guys!

EDIT: Okay, I think I'm giving up on it being cheap. It looks like to have a decent camera, I need to pay more like 6000. It's worth that to me if it's really good quality and will last me, though I'll have to watch my expenses for a while... This one is looking promising. Any thoughts? https://www.alza.cz/EN/nvidia-shield-tablet-k1-d3810310.htm?catid=18852425

Life Advice / Cleaning a really nasty old oven
« on: January 03, 2016, 08:14:35 am »
A friend of mine gave me his old oven. It's not a built-in one; it sits on the countertop, but it's quite big (not a little toaster oven). It works great, but it's about 10 years old and it's never once been cleaned. Worse, he had it in a nasty, dank, moldy basement apartment for most of those 10 years. It was sitting next to the cooktop and one side is completely plastered with ancient grease stains. The glass window is totally brown and black, and the inside doesn't look any better.

I just spent an hour trying to clean it, using the strongest cleaner I could find (and a good pair of rubber gloves). The water quickly turned brown and had to be replaced many times. I managed to get some of the gunk off, but a lot of it simply refuses to budge. I spent ten full minutes doing nothing but scrubbing the glass with the strong cleaner, alternating between a tough sponge and steel wool, and I can now see through it in some places, but a lot of it just won't come off no matter what I do.

Is there any chance I'll ever get this thing looking like new? I don't mind spending some time and some elbow grease getting it looking nice, but I just don't know if it's possible. My grandmother visited me and was horrified by the sight of the thing (she honestly believed it was a health hazard). Anyone have any oven-cleaning tips? Any specific cleaners (or types of cleaners - a lot of the things available in the US/UK, for example, don't exist here, so I need chemical names) that can take off the worst of the ten-year-old baked-on gook?

EDIT: Because it's been mentioned several times, MAGIC ERASERS ARE NOT AVAILABLE WHERE I LIVE. I do know about them but I can't get them here.
