The Bay 12 Games Report, May 9th 2024

We've got the adventure mode beta up on Steam, and that'll make it's way over to a full Premium/Classic when it's ready.  There are several menus left to do, and we're also going to add the new chosen/hero stuff etc.  It shouldn't take forever but the deity/demigod/dungeon bits will take some percolating.  Just cleaned up the barter menu yesterday and will probably clean up shops a bit next.  Should have more information on art and music soon as we reconvene after my late April/early May break.

Everything is still going well over in sales land.  Down to 8k copies in February, up to 16k in March, returning to 13k in April.  The adventure beta didn't move things much, but it was pretty low key, which is just as well since there are menus left to add.

Mission Status

The Adventure continues.  As we thought, the first phase is progressing well.  This means that the interface moving from Classic to Premium one per one is going well.  But that's not all we want to do.  We want to improve on the original.  Not everyone is like you, the Hardcore.  We don't get good reviews from them, the Confused.  That's where we came up with the idea to ask for divine intervention.  We want this to be a great launch, so be patient.  Be little demigods and let your poppa work.  We promise it will be worth it.

"Congratulations to the generous!" -- ThreeToe

Fun with Numbers

Some tangible steps toward Myth&Magic are on their way!  This should be fun.  We also have a 50.12 patch nearly ready to go.  It's been nice to have some patches while the adventure mode stuff is also underway.  We'll have to see what the release situation looks like after April once work is finally more normal again, with the two modes out.  We're going to try our best to continue with more regular patches rather than long disappearances, working in new features as we go.

In January, there were about 13.5k copies sold.  Everything still running along smoothly!

Mission Status

What's to say about the year gone past?  That's one that I'll remember.  The year my other brother died.  There is nothing really good to say about this year...  except that we got paid.  It really does to take a lot off your mind.  It opens up a lot of opportunities, but can it really bring back someone who died so young?  There are a lot of things we are going to be able to do now.  We can travel the world on our own dime.  How much does it really matter when you lose someone who mattered so much?  I'll tell you.

You are the only ones holding us together.  Without you we would still be working thankless jobs that were far from rewarding.  We are getting older.  Friends and family passing away is something we'll have to get used to.  This was a lot though.  I have to ask if my wife will ever be happy again.  Do I think any amount of money will fix that?  With your help, I sure will try.

"Congratulations to the generous!" -- ThreeToe

Yeesh, what a year.  Hopefully the next one will be more relaxed and see us finish out Adventure mode and then get into new stuff for everybody.  I guess relaxed might not be possible, since we have ourselves another deadline ha ha.  But it'll be good to get through the basic Adventure mode update.

With the Winter sale, we hit 27k copies sold in December.  As expected, a pretty good chunk!

Mission Status

Sometimes it really seems like those forces that control the universe don't want us to finish the big update.  But look at it this way:  The glory will be that much more great.  Adventure mode UI is underway.  Depending on how much time we have before April, the game will be enhanced in the way it will after the release.  That is to say:  more fun directed at you, like a firehose of entertainment.

"Congratulations to the generous!" -- ThreeToe

Fun with Numbers

Menus and graphics!  The work continues.  We've set an adventure mode release month now, and it's good to have something to point to, but yeah, we're just going to keep working after that, so it both means something and doesn't.  I think it's nice in the sense that it'll help us crystallize some useful features in the vein of adventure tutorialization etc. that might have been easy to let slip, but we're going to try to do this in a way that's entertaining for returning players as well.

18k copies in November!  Some portion of this was due to a currency change in Turkey and Argentina, and a healthy chunk was the Autumn Sale on Steam.  Fascinating to watch the data unfold over the year...  and Christmas approaches!  Our last Christmas was right after the release of the game so it kind of merged with the release bump, but now we'll see a Christmas under its own power.

Mission Status

We were off to a bumpy start last month, but now things look like we might actually have a chance to launch into some smooth sailing.  That said: I would like to present two giant middle fingers to the Whims of Fate who have completely messed up our lives in the last few months, just when everything was going so well.  There is no bright side to this nonsense.  Your patience is deeply appreciated.

Yeah, grandma passed away at the age of 100.  For the DF community, she was the judge of our crayon art rewards - if you got one over the years and didn't make a specific request, it's quite likely she decided that your drawing was meant for you.  So it has been kind of unrelenting, but we're just going to try to reboot in November with some heavy interface sections of Adventure Mode, and we should be able to show some stuff next week as well.

11k copies in October...  there's a large bump a good while after the release and I'm not even sure why!  Looks like we're going to oscillate pretty wildly, which we're used to of course ha ha.

Mission Status

The Adventure begins in earnest.  The interface is beginning to coalesce.  The travel map is under construction.  Soon your life will be complete as your world is connected, fortress to fortress, for all time.

"Congratulations to the generous!" -- ThreeToe

Fun with Numbers

Yeah, it's fun to have things springing back to life again.  Site maps, portraits, the main interface layout.  There are several menus/etc. to do - we should be posting a roadmap soon to sort of remind everybody of what updating the entirety of adventure mode entails.  New patch shortly as well for the linux log crash and new tutorial troubles, among other things.

Down to ~6000 sales in September.  Seems pretty normal, since we didn't have any particular event going on for once, and it still represents the same sort of average background number of 200 per day we've been experiencing.  We'll be lucky enough if that continues.

Mission Status

This has been a very bad month.  Annie lost her brother.  It would have been even worse if it wasn't for all of you.  We had the freedom for her to be with him every day he was in the hospital hoping for the best.  Despite all the heroic efforts to save him, he is gone.  It's something that we have to live with for the rest of our lives.  But thanks to you we have means to take care of the loved ones he left behind.

"Congratulations to the generous!" -- ThreeToe

Fun with Numbers

Did about 9000 copies in August, which is pretty normal.  Another patch soon, and we should also be getting to more adventure mode news as well since that's underway.

Mission Status

These last few weeks have been a nightmare.  I'm not going to lie.  But while we have been hampered by Fate, Destiny, and all the rest, the artists and programmer have been tirelessly working on a whole bunch of stuff we have to organize and implement.  Now I want you all to go out and make a blood sacrifice to Armok in order to help our family through these trying times.  I really am hoping it works.

"Congratulations to the generous!" -- ThreeToe

Fun with Numbers

Yeah, things have been not great with a family member suddenly battling for their life.  Like Threetoe says, there's a lot of stuff for us to pull together now, from Linux, to new art in various directions, and we'll see how it goes!  Last journey of the year to gamescom later this month (then PAX locally), and we should be hunkered down after that, but the next few weeks are also good for something.

Dwarforts sold up a bit due to the Steam Summer Sale in July (15K), so it's all going well there.

Mission Status

Faster.  Stronger.  Better - and ready to begin a great adventure!  A new world awaits under a cloud of ASCII nonsense and bad UI.  What's going on down there?  We are there looking back at you, hard at work shaping a meta-narrative that brings shape to an otherwise meaningless romp through an amazing yet pointless world.  This all changes the minute the shroud is pulled away.  Prepare yourselves.

"Congratulations to the generous!" -- ThreeToe

Fun with Numbers

SDL2 is up now, and another big round of applause for Putnam!  Generally, there are so many different tracks being worked on ha ha ha - adventure mode, new audio, more art, Linux, bug fixes, announcements, UI uniformization that should help with classic as well as new graphical screens, just a pile.  It's kind of hard to say which tracks will move forward and how much this month.  Probably best not to try and guess!  But we're all plugging away at it and I'll try to keep everybody posted more than I have been.

Sales in the same range (12K this month), so everything's fine there.

Download (Click refresh on your browser if it doesn't show up)

Release notes for 50.09 (June 28, 2023):

In this release, we're updating the engine from SDL to SDL2, and there are many optimizations to go along with it.  Aside from the optimizations, SDL2 is also the stepping stone to ports.  We have Linux compiling and playable; it just needs some testing.

Moreover, there is now a(n experimental) multithreading option in the game settings that makes the game even faster!

We also have some new individual tree graphics, and an update to grass ramps as well.

This has been mostly the hard work of Putnam!  Meanwhile I've started up on adventure mode - the long work of updating menus and adding audio has begun!  Hopefully we'll have some progress to show their soon, as we continue updating fortress mode as well.

New stuff
(*) Updated to SDL2 and made many surrounding changes.  Various performance gains!
(*) Experimental multithreading is available from game settings.

Graphics additions/changes
(*) Some more trees now have individual graphics (maple, willow, cedar, larch, kapok, papaya, macademia.)
        (*) Updated some ramp images.

Mission Status

Have you ever held your emotions so deep down until you thought you would explode?  The rush...  the release is a feeling so great you have to express it in song.  We sing a song of multiple threads...  multiple branches coming together to make something greater...  something faster.  You will see soon what two programmers can do.  Some might fawn over the new menus.  Some may cruise through the new optimization.  All will say it was worth the wait.

"Congratulations to the generous!" -- ThreeToe

Fun with Numbers

We were hoping to get the SDL2 stuff over on the main branch right before we left for Game Access 2023 at the end of May, but didn't get it posted, so we should be doing that pretty soon.  This will be good.  The multithreading requires a bit more testing, so it's off by default, but it will be available even on the main branch through the settings!  This speeds up the game quite a lot - Putnam has done an excellent job modernizing the code.

I have an adventurer running around.  We're just getting started on the menus/audio/etc. there.  This should be very exciting, though we also expect it to take some time before it can be released.  Adventure mode has many many options and menus ha ha.  And the report/ammo/etc. improvements are still coming down the line.

Sales up to 14k, from the Kitfox sale bump, and the daily ranges are around 200-300.  Everything still behaving sensibly!  We'll see how patching this month alters things, but we don't expect any big fluctuations until adventure mode is finally together.  This daily rate of sales still covers everybody that's now working on the project (lots of people!) and other B12 expenses, which is good, and we'd still be okay even if it slumps a bit more.
