DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Looking for a workaround for a crash
« on: August 27, 2016, 12:32:47 am »
I've encountered this game breaking bug.  My most recent save is literally seconds away from crashing, and I don't have a recent backup.

Are there any clever suggestions for a workaround to keep the game from crashing?  I'm not against editing the raws to make it work.

Basically, the crash seems to happen when goblins trigger traps.  I suspect it may have something to do with a menacing spike in the trap wearing down.

As the title says, I haven't played in a couple years.  I see there's been a major update and it looks like there should be another major update coming up in the not-terribly-distant-future.

Could someone give me a brief summary of what to look out for in the current version and/or what to expect in the upcoming version?

Thanks. :)

Curses / Affecting specific issues in LCS
« on: September 10, 2011, 11:40:31 am »
So I'm currently in the middle of my first game of LCS with any small amount of "success".  We have L+ president, L congress (and getting more liberal with each election), and the issues have moved to L on average.

However there are a few specific issues where public opinion is lagging behind (in this particular case: gay rights, death penalty, taxes, free speech, corporate malfeasance, marijuana, military spending, cable news)  Some of these are L and others are as far down as C.

I looked on the wiki for a guide about this, but I couldn't find one.  Is there some sort of guide or table that lists the best way to change public opinion about the various issues?  Failing that, could someone help me out on these specific issues?  I'm trying to be non-violent in this game too, if that changes anything.  Thanks.

Other Games / Running Old Total War Games on modern systems
« on: June 24, 2011, 10:11:36 pm »
Has anyone here had luck running old Total War games (e.g. Shogun 1 and Medieval 1) on modern systems?  When I try, I get a lot of flickering on the menu screen and campaign map.  My system specs are:

Intel i7 930
Geforce GTX 470
Win 7 64 bit

I can run Shogun without the flickering on a virtual machine, but then it is really laggy.  I've read it's an issue with the more modern nvidia cards, and I've tried fiddling around with settings to no avail.

Other Games / Installing directx 9 on win7 machines?
« on: June 23, 2011, 04:31:49 pm »
Does anyone know how to do this?

Some old games require files from dx9, but everytime I try to install dx9, it sees dx11 and refuses to install since there is a newer version.

General Discussion / Have you seen the Star Wars Holiday Special?
« on: June 17, 2011, 09:15:40 pm »
So I just watched this a couple days ago.  I genuinely had no idea that something could be so painful to watch.  I didn't get a full picture of how bad it was until about an half-hour in.  But at that point, I had committed to watching the whole thing.

Has anyone else had the same experience?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Looking for a 3D visualizer
« on: May 01, 2011, 07:01:48 pm »
I'm looking for a 3D visualizers, and I'm a little out of the loop as to which are currently up-to-date.  The wiki only lists two visualizers: Stonesense and Fortress Overseer.

The former is not quite what I'm looking for.  The latter is what I'm looking for, but doesn't seem to like my video card.  Are there any others?

Life Advice / My computer just died
« on: March 22, 2011, 04:47:52 pm »
When I pressed the power button today, I heard two very loud pops coming from the computer.  This was followed by a burning smell.  I immediately unplugged everything and opened the case, but I could not locate where the smell was coming from before it went away.

I don't see any obvious damage inside, but I am hardly an expert.  Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be?

Other Games / So I finally got Alien Crossfire, but there's a catch...
« on: August 17, 2010, 08:29:09 pm »
I got Alpha Centauri when it first came out.  I was a pretty good game, but I was still too young to really appreciate it.  When the Alien Crossfire expansion came out, I let it pass by without getting it.  Later on, I would return to SMAC, and really appreciate the depth of it.  I then regretted not getting the expansion when it came out.

In any case, last week I finally decided to bite the bullet and buy Alien Crossfire.  I found a good deal on a bundle of SMAC/SMAX and bought it online.  I should have done my research.

Here's what I got:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Interesting...  This is a re-released version by "Sold-Out Software."  Basically, they released a SMAC/SMAX bundle again for a cheap price.  Not a bad idea.  So far, so good.

But Sold Out Software is an EA distributor.  You know what that means:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Crap, DRM.  I did a little searching online and found that the thing has SecuROM on it.  And this is a legacy title, no less!  They truly have no shame.  I really want to install this game, but I know that I probably shouldn't.

First of all, let this be a lesson to everyone to research your online purchases first.  In my case, the seller didn't list this as the re-released version, but I should have known better.

Second, I want to open this up to everyone here.  Is anyone familiar with this version or its DRM?  I've never used something with SecuROM before, but I've heard terrible things.  Should I just return this and cough up the cash for the real deal?

I just had one of the infamous unkillable forgotten beasts show up underground.  Fortunately for me, I had just finished walling off the underground map edges.

Now I have this indestructible forgotten beast just sitting outside my underground walls.  Does anyone have ideas on how I might use this beast?  This opportunity seems too good to pass up.  Do they go after goblins?  I have a large number of prisoners...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Butchering is Excessive
« on: April 25, 2010, 02:05:09 am »
Seriously.  I have waaaaaay too much meat in this fortress.  I have 15 dwarves, no immigration, and here is the stockpile of meat:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm not even trying to get more meat.  Every time I activate the military to deal with a threat, they usually go kill some wildlife while they're at it.  In this region that usually means elephants.  At least I don't have whales.

Anyone else swimming in animal products?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / No dwarven caravan?
« on: April 24, 2010, 08:22:43 pm »
I haven't received a dwarven (or human, for that matter) caravan at all in my current fortress.  I'm two years in, so I'm pretty sure it's not coming.  I got a small immigration wave right at the beginning but nothing since then (This makes sense, since there has been no caravan!)

Does this mean my parent civilization is extinct?   The dwarf civ shows up on my civ screen, but has no leaders.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Quick question on HFS (spoilers, of course)
« on: April 10, 2010, 09:26:00 pm »
So I haven't had the chance  to thoroughly test out this new version, but I have a couple quick questions.  I do not want to be really spoiled, though.  A simple yes or no will suffice for my purposes.

1) I've dug down as deep as I can and can't get past the semi-molten rock.  I assume the real fun begins with the infamous cyan ore?

2) Does Adamantine still only occur in mountain areas, or is it everywhere now?  Does it have the same frequency as before (1 per world tile)?

Again: I want to discover it on my own, but I want to make sure I'm not wasting my time.  Thanks.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Has anyone seen this before
« on: August 25, 2009, 06:12:49 pm »
This is the tomb for a now-deceased Baron from a succession game.

As you can see, there's a hematite vein that goes through the tomb.  Nothing special there.  But the really interesting thing is that most of the baron's stuff in the tomb ended up placed on the vein.  I've never seen this before.  Has anyone else?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Getting dwarves to fall in love
« on: August 04, 2009, 12:36:30 pm »
How do you do it?

I currently have two dwarves that I want to get together.  How much do we know about what causes or delays relationships forming?
