DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: May 08, 2024, 08:44:05 pm »
You would have received at least two groups of early autumn migrants regardless of what else happened, did they get slaughtered?

It might take a couple of years for the trauma to be reduced, but the three dwarfs should improve their moods over time. With only 3 dwarfs, force them to socialize at the same time (lock them in the tavern with food and booze for a few months per year).

It is probably safe to let the mercenary in...  But, the hydra is outside now? Why is the mercenary alive still? Set up a hallway with doors to trap the hydra, because if you open the doors it may begin running to get inside.

750 out of 100k+... It gets back to the question of how many are staying out of all the politics.

Was there any case were the counter-protestors ever outnumbered the protesters?

Haven't the ones protesting against the violence always outnumbered the counter-protestors?

Most of that 100k is not under attack from their fellow students and are staying out of the conflict.

You really think controlling a market could be something other than a constant and evolving process? The plans are *always* there. It is control over the supply chain and the control over the politicians that is not always there.

Something changed in the background of the supply chain for these chemical aberrations of cannabis, like a consolidation between some of the investors or a finalizing of cooperative agreements about stuff like price-fixing. The market controllers have control, so their politicians are pushing forward what they previously held back, a change to the scheduling of the drug, which will give those still in the market a tax benefit.

You can be sure that the politics of lowering the scheduling only went forward after those who were financially vested could finagle how to capture the new market. The triangle of politicians, gangsters, and big-business owners already has multiple plans laid out to put themselves in control of the profits or "taxes" (of whichever type).

It is like how the US healthcare system was captured. The healthcare payouts from the government flow into the insurance companies and then into the healthcare systems, and whether patients receive the correct treatment can become less important than whether they receive the more profitable treatment.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: 47.05 food cooking
« on: May 03, 2024, 11:29:52 am »
Definitely not normal, but I wouldn't call it a bug, because the dwarf eventually stopped adding items to the massive stack of ingredients, and they didn't attempt to cook furniture or socks.

Don't let players tell you it is a bug just because your dwarf disobeyed the laws of the noble dwarfs. This happens in DF. Your dwarf saw the large amount of raw fruit collecting in the fort and decided to use their skills to preserve it, creating a cubic meter of candied fruit treats that will last for years.

It should be called "rare, outstanding, and praiseworthy". If you are feeling dwarfy about it, you could take the opportunity to find out if display furniture can preserve food, by putting that roast on display in a highly trafficked hallway, then check if dwarfs get happy thoughts from viewing it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Woodcutters don't cut wood
« on: May 03, 2024, 10:39:31 am »
Your woodcutters need to be a member of the Woodcutters work detail (labor screen).

Your woodcutters need to be holding an axe in their hands. Normally they pick up one immediately, but those axes on the ground may be reserved for military uniforms.

Are all your woodcutters in the hospital for some reason?

The woodcutters need to be able to walk to the designated tile on the tree. It is possible to designate a tree tile for chopping that is would require climbing to reach, or that there is a locked door between the dwarf and the tree. Or that the stairs allowing the dwarfs to climb out were accidentally removed.

I have seen dwarfs ignore tree cutting while there is a lot of nearby hauling work, but the higher priority marks on the trees usually gets the dwarfs attention.

They have elections in 5 months... their protesters understand their current administration is trying rig the election (voter suppression and misinformation, the Russian style).

The articles commonly say there are Jewish students among the protestors (an unspecified quantity of the whole), and that Jewish students are "afraid" for their safety (the implicit being that "all Jewish students are afraid for their safety").

Imagine an alternative reality... Right Wing Students protest against actions of something like BLM movement. Some right wing black Americans are on the side of protesters. And protesters randomly attack black people with "wrong" views on BLM. Would you need polls? Would you care about the percentage to determine what those protests are about?
You don't need the percentages to know what it is about, you need the percentages to show that the narrative of "all Jewish students are afraid for their safety" is false. The protestors will lose the propaganda battle if they cannot get that data out.

If any of those colleges had as many as 20% of their jewish students protesting, that would change the narrative.

Something I have noticed in the news reporting is bothering me....

The articles commonly say there are Jewish students among the protestors (an unspecified quantity of the whole), and that Jewish students are "afraid" for their safety (the implicit being that "all Jewish students are afraid for their safety").

So, if you try looking at it from the pro-protestor narrative, you see there is Jewish support for the protestors, and if you look at it from the anti-protester narrative, you see no Jewish support for the protesters. When you have competing ideas of "all of them" versus "some of them", it tends to create the idea "the some of them is practically none of them".

Unless the pro-protestor groups get some statistics about their groups, like "what percent of the jewish students from campus are among the student protestors", and "what percentage of the jewish students from campus are more afraid for their own safety than for the protestors' safety"?, then the narrative is going to swing towards ideas like "the few Jewish students protesting aren't Jewish" and "all Jewish students on campus feel unsafe".

And you eventually get used to it and ingrained in your muscle memory. Then there is no need for a numpad and you laugh at weaklings who use one.
I fought the habits I created in my own mind and body, and won! My past self was a weakling... Swagger swagger swagger, all day long...

It is always a laugh when I catch myself doing this.

So...if the Supreme Court for some reason rules that US Presidents are basically immune to criminal prosecution...then could Biden have Donald Trump assassinated then rely on the Democratic-majority Senate blocking impeachment?

Either I'm missing something or I feel like the insane conspiracy theorists aren't thinking this one through...
It is a component of the Scorpion and Turtle parable... When Scorpion asks for a ride across the river, he is also offering to trust Turtle, because Turtle could dive midway and leave Scorpion drowning. The only thing Scorpion offers Turtle is trust. This is the foundation for most Turtle and Scorpion games you see in life, mostly conman confidence and theft games, but also more murderous schemes.

So, in the immunity to criminal prosecution case, Scorpion is arguing that the rules should allow unlimited unlawful activity, trusting that Turtle will not use those powers against Scorpion, but you know what Scorpion is going to do as soon as Scorpion can...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Mass pitting in v.50?
« on: April 23, 2024, 01:47:10 pm »
The mass pitting method stopped working about DF 45... Creatures grab onto the pit edge and climb up while your hauler runs in terror.

Besides the "build cage, link, and pull lever" method, you can also use minecarts to eject creatures from cages. This is a good method because your haulers will be safe and the micromanaging should be limited to queuing up another minecart to be filled up. See the wiki's Remotely Opening cages and the link contained there to the minecart thread including the Live Ammo Minecart Shotgun.

Minecart shotguns are not that complicated... this is an 11 minute youtube vid on creating a minecart shotgun designed to fire furniture into a room. I believe you would modify this by having the area to the right of the fortifications be a fall down several z's, so the cages and their occupants fall into the pit. I haven't tried this...

Johnson may be getting things done with Dem support like McCarthy did, and getting attacked for it, but he is more dangerous, not as a leader but as a symbol.

He wears the guise of religious morality and good manners, so when he is attacked and continues to display good manners, it just improves his appearance of morality. But he was a major component of the attempt to delay and overturn the November 2020 election results, which makes his morality the same as Netanyahu's... like "Only the people of my religious community have souls that matter".

There may be an option allowing you to farm above the ocean...

There used to be, and probably still is, a problem with the "air" above having a different biome than the ground level (or in this case, the ocean level). It may be that all you need to do is build up from your obsidian platform and muddy some floor tiles there, then it may grow surface plants. This will depend on what the biome above is, as it may be more ocean...

Patrik Lundell had a ShowBiomes lua script that would allow you to see what the biomes in the air were. I'm not sure if it works with the current version.
