Forum Games and Roleplaying / Modern Magic (D&D 4E) - We're Going!

Spoiler: Preface (click to show/hide)

Introduction

The year is 2035. It's just another ordinary June day in America. People are walking the streets, going about their business. On Wall Street, one businessman loses all of his investments, while another gets rich. A storm rolls through Kansas, providing much-needed water. But, deep in the Nevada desert, at a famous Air Force base, a disturbance is happening. The experiments are getting restless...

Elsewhere, in London, a young boy is playing alone with his toys. He wages an imaginary battle between two plastic dinosaurs, resulting in the "death" of the smaller one, represented by it laying on its side. He sighs, and thinks to himself, "I wish these could be real." A car pulling up to the house catches his attention. It's his mother, back from the store, with supper. He rushes off to meet her at the door. As he's closing his bedroom door, he notices something: the smaller dinosaur is standing up.

Information

I am looking for 5 players in this campaign. The first 5 people to reply and say they want to join will be selected. We'll deal with character creation after signups are complete. The campaign will be set in a mostly-modern world, with some post-modern elements like advanced military technology. D&D 4E will be used for the format, for the most part, but improvisation will be allowed and encouraged, since 4E's medieval high fantasy style doesn't quite fit for a modern setting.

Players:

1. RangerCado Zako
2. Remuthra
3. Sirus
4. kj1225
5. GreatWyrmGold

Play With Your Buddies / Let's Play Tales of Phantasia!

If there is evil in this world, it lurks in the hearts of gamers...

Well, finals are coming up, and I have a minimal amount of work to do. To fill up that spare time, I decided on doing a Let's Play of a favorite game of mine:

That's right. The game that started the Tales series (which is definitely nothing like the Final Fantasy series at all), in its original SNES glory. I've only ever played ToP on the Game Boy Advance, so I'm not sure what differences there are in this version. But, here goes nothing!

Note: I'm using the DeJap translation of the Japanese SNES game.

More to come later. I'm sad that I couldn't rename Chester. I was all ready to name him Rory.

Comments/suggestions on the style? Too many pictures? Not enough?

Premise

The United States Congress has just received startling news. A transmission has just been picked up by the Department of Defense, originating from outer space. After 3 hours of work, the nation's expert cryptographers have managed to decode the message. It is short and simple:

Quote from: The Message
Hello, America. We are coming. Expect us in 1/3 of a rotation after you receive this message.

An emergency joint session of Congress was called. Much speculation was made about the "1/3 of a rotation". Finally, the Vice President realized what it meant.

Quote from: Vice President
Of course! It means 8 hours! The Earth rotates once every 24 hours, so 1/3 of a rotation is 8 hours! Minus the 3 hours that have passed since we received the message, so we only have 5 hours left!

And so, Congress must now decide how to handle the message. Is it genuine? Are there actually extra-terrestrials coming to visit America? If so, what are they planning on doing once they arrive?

Factions

This game will feature two factions, the Conservatives and the Liberals. Within each faction exists two more sub-factions, the Moderates and the Extremists. Each faction and sub-faction have different characteristics, as described by the following character sheets:

Spoiler: Extreme Conservative (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Moderate Conservative (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Moderate Liberal (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Extreme Liberal (click to show/hide)

The Game

Rolls will be done with a standard d6. The effects are as follows:

1: Hilarious Failure
2: Complete Failure
3: Partial Failure
4: Partial Success
5: Complete Success
6: Hilarious Overkill

Rolls less than 1 and more than 6 are possible due to status effects such as the intrinsic boosts from the factions. The effects of those rolls will be determined when they happen.

Each turn is 1 hour half an hour in-game. That means you have 5 10 turns before the aliens supposedly arrive.

There will be 6 spots in the game. 3 spots will be Conservatives, and 3 will be Liberals. Of those 3 spots, 1 will be an Extremist spot, and 2 will be Moderate spots. Though it is not required, I heavily encourage players to be in-character according to their respective factions. It will certainly be more entertaining that way.

Player List:
Extreme Conservative: Noodlerex
Moderate Conservative: NRDL
Moderate Conservative: RTD
Moderate Liberal: Imakuni
Moderate Liberal: Scelly9
Extreme Liberal: MonkeyHead

Creative Projects / Musicians Thread
« on: April 24, 2012, 08:20:08 pm »
Hey! Hey you! Are you a musician, looking for a way to use your talents in a creative project? Do you want to contribute to musical projects that other Bay12ers are working on? Do you want to toot your own horn (pun intended)?

Well, look no further. This thread is for musicians looking for projects to join in on, and for composers looking for musicians to play their music. I had the inspiration for this a while back, when I was thinking about writing a suite inspired by the Battlefailed trilogy. After talking with some of my friends about an Indie movie we're planning on making, I decided to make this thread, so that the people of Bay12 will have a place to find musicians and music.

So, if you're a musician, post your instrument, and optionally what style of music you would prefer to play. If you're a composer, post what parts need to be covered, and preferably what style of music it is. A sample of the parts (MIDI or sheet music) would be helpful if possible. For example:

I play Bb Clarinet. I can and will play pretty much any style you can throw at me. I also play guitar, both electric and acoustic, but at a lower level than clarinet.

As far as the movie I mentioned earlier goes, the music hasn't been written yet, but the parts needed are:

Violin
Viola
Cello
Bass

Flute
Piccolo (?)
Alto Saxophone
Tenor Saxophone
Bb Trumpet (?)
F Horn (?)
Tenor Trombone (?)
Euphonium
Tuba

Various percussion parts (snare, bass, marimba, etc)
Piano

General Discussion / if self.isCoder(): post() #Programming Thread
« on: January 02, 2012, 11:57:54 pm »
If you can't find it, grind it.

After tossing the idea out for this thread in the Happy Thread, I decided to make it. Have something you're programming and you want to talk about it? Go for it! Need some help with an issue? Ask, and it might get answered. Want to show off your code? We want to see it.

I swear to Armok if this thread degenerates into flaming over any of the stupid computer debates (Windows/Mac/Linux, programming languages, or anything else), I will lock it faster than a supercomputer can execute a O(0) command.

DING DONG THE FORT IS DEAD!

Spoiler: Quotes! (click to show/hide)

WELCOME TO HELLCANNON (BATTLEFAILED THE THIRD)

ThatAussieDwarf, Mego, The Master, Deathsword, gamewizardinnc, Urist Imiknorris, and Sinpwn gathered together in the Queen's chamber. They had all been summoned there by Her Majesty, Led Shakecannons, and were anxious to know what she wished of them. Given the fact that seven were summoned, they could guess what she had in mind.

"All seven of you are very capable dwarves. You stand up to any challenge and never back down. This is why the Mountainhomes need you. As you may have heard, dwarves who go off to a certain area of the continent never return. We have lost contact with all of our settlements. When we send caravans and migrants, they do not return."

The seven dwarves exchanged nervous glances with each other.

"You seven have been chosen to investigate what is going on. You are to build a fortress near the site of the disappearances and carefully observe the happenings. Report to us frequently."

Deathsword cried out, "But, that will surely result in our deaths!"

Led turned to Deathsword. "It is a necessary sacrifice. We must know what has happened to our settlements. That region holds some of the most valuable resources in all of Aluorna. Will you accept this challenge?"

Knowing that the question only had one answer, the dwarves hesitantly agreed to investigate the mystery.

The others blamed me, and have decided that, despite my being expedition leader, we need a different overseer. Deathsword was unanimously picked to be the first overseer of our fortress. His first act as overseer was to declare the name to be Hellcannon. Whatever, man. I'll just lie low until it's the right time to take control.

LAST SAVE

A note to those unfamiliar with the storyline: This is a continuation of Battlefailed and Failcannon, but not a direct sequel. This fortress was created in a regenned world, due to no new fortresses being able to be made in the original gen. I've purposely left out the connection in the introduction. The community can decide on how it will be related. I have ideas, but it's up to everybody on how we do this.

Also, mods in this fort include:
1. Oar->cannon swap
2. Swapping nickel silver for bone blocks (didn't work)
3. Adding a reaction for blood bricks to be produced from blood spatters and such (has not been thoroughly tested yet doesn't work)

Note: Mego is incompetent when it comes to mods. Let someone else handle the mods next time.

And now, the image that sums up all of Hellcannon:

DF Modding / Blood Bricks - Request
« on: October 12, 2011, 10:22:29 pm »
I have a simple suggestion/request for the modding community here, inspired by an idea I had in a succession game. Battlefailed and Failcannon (the succession forts) have a reaction added to make bones (and, by extension, muscle and other body parts) into bricks used for building. I came up with the idea of doing the same thing, only with blood, vomit, and other bodily fluids.

While the idea is simple, the implementation will surely not be. To get bodily fluids into a form that can be made into bricks through reactions, they must first be converted into congealed forms. But, must can only happen when they are on the ground or walls - we all know what will happen if a dorf's blood congeals inside its veins. Once congealed, it will then be processable at a workshop (perhaps a carpenter's workshop or mason's workshop) to make bricks.

I am not a modder. I have no idea how this would even begin to be implemented in a mod. So, that's why I'm presenting the challenge here. I have seen the crazy things this community is capable of, and I believe this is well within your abilities.

Side note: Forgotten Beast excretions should probably not be included in the reaction. On second thought, that sounds like Fun. The only thing that could top a fortress made out of bones, blood, and vomit is a fortress made out of bones, blood, vomit, and stuff that will kill you if you touch it.
