General Discussion / Things that made you sad today thread.
« on: October 12, 2009, 11:45:18 am »
As it seemed needed, here is this thread.

Something that made me kind of sad was that the calculus teacher explained something by means of a man jumping down the Eiffel tower.

I however have no problems with Dwarf Fortran gravity testing towers.

Creative Projects / Lomography
« on: July 23, 2009, 10:28:23 am »
A few months ago I saw a video on lomography. Don't know which one, or I'd link it here. (But the person being interviewed/followed turned out not have a roll in his camera.)
Lomography is photography with cheap (technically) and 'bad' cameras, most likely made of only plastic. The name comes from cameras of the Russian LOMO brand.

Lomography has Ten Golden Rules:
  • Take your camera everywhere you go.
  • Use it any time – day and night.
  • Lomography is not an interference in your life, but part of it.
  • Try the shot from the hip.
  • Approach the objects of your Lomographic desire as close as possible.
  • Don’t think. (William Firebrace)
  • Be fast.
  • You don’t have to know beforehand what you captured on film.
  • Afterwards either.
  • Don’t worry about any rules.

I'm posting this topic because I aquired a LOMO Fisheye camera, which they are selling on their website for 40 euro. I bought it for 70 cents.
(I also got the game 'The Longest Journey' for a euro).

I was wondering if you might know something about it, and give me tips. I might also use this topic to post some pictures I take (If the camera turns out to be not broken).

Here are some links.

And a picture of the camera I got (not my picture).

I plan on taking it with me when I go to a summer camp to fly gliders. I think I could take some neat pictures there.

DF General Discussion / Dwarf Fortress mentioned in Escapist Magazine
« on: July 15, 2009, 05:39:37 pm »
Granted, it's in the letters to the editor, but it's nice nonetheless.

The only important bits of it:

Quote
The only emergent
game I’ve ever seen actually produce a
surprisingly deep personal story was
Dwarf Fortress. The thing is...who the
f*** understands how to play that game?
I don’t mean any offense to the proud
gamers who can, but I struggled with it
for hours and hear the same from most
people.

Quote
There are also plenty of individuals out
there who make indie games, of course,
but none spring immediately to mind
except the maker of Dwarf Fortress, Tarn
Adams, and the maker of Battleships
Forever, Sean ‘th15’ Chan.

PDF File

I will link more later, as I'm now too tired to think. Apologies if I'm way too late with this.

Quite a simple game, this.

The player posts a picture or a sentence of what the picture of the previous poster made him think of. With preference for pictures, I think.

Here's the first:

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Quick world generation
« on: November 04, 2008, 10:49:16 am »
I'm not sure if this is the best place to post it, though.

I generated a new world, with only two rejects. I think it would be good to post it somewhere, for people who want to start playing quickly, without downloading a map, but with seeing the world being generated.
(I also don't know if recently map generation is quick nowadays)

DF Gameplay Questions / On magma forges and temperature
« on: October 15, 2008, 03:39:01 pm »
'Ello, first post here outside of various nonsense.

Status: Playing Dwarf Fortress on an acer aspire one, with half a gig of ram and the linux version, through wine. I've done a lot of speed-improvements in the init file, including turning off temperature. I currently run at 11 fps. ( I also have a proper pc on which the dwarves hobble around at normal speed ).

I was wondering, does turning off temperature prevent mamga forges and furnaces (glass and otherwise) from working?

Note: I am running a somewhat older version, unsure if that matters. In case it does, it is 27_176_38c_s.
