General Discussion / philosophy: is "chair" an opinion?
« on: September 04, 2017, 07:19:08 am »
This was one of the first subjects that came up during philosophy in the first year of high school. It is something that has occupied me on and off for years afterwards.

The assignment was about writing if a robot could be a human. The debate at some point arrived at what ANYTHING was anyway. What is a human? What is a robot? What is a table? What is a chair?

Is saying something is a chair an opinion?

General Discussion / The debate over pointless things thread
« on: April 03, 2017, 05:33:25 am »
For all your weirdly interesting philosophizing and debating over probably pointless things.

I'll start:

Sally is in a room with two baskets and a marble. She puts the marble in basket 1 and leaves the room.

Ann comes in the room and unbeknown to Sally she moves the marble from basket 1 to basket 2.

Sophie meets Sally and asks where the marble is.

Sally says it is in basket 2.

Is Sally a liar?

General Discussion / Building your own 8 bit breadboard computer
« on: September 22, 2016, 06:32:03 am »
So I was sitting behind my pc in my comfy chair and I suddenly realized that I don't actually know anything about how computers actually work. Sure I know the function of the RAM and the CPU etc, but how do they WORK.

So after quite some searching I stumbled upon the youtube channel of Ben Eater, who is creating a series about how to make your own homebrew computer and has the best explanation of how computers actually work I have ever seen.

This is his introduction video stating he plans to do a series on making an 8 bit breadboard computer from basic components:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyznrdDSSGM

And this is him programming it:

As a mechanical engineer I have never been so exited about computer design in my life.

So I invite you all to share your ideas and comments about computer design!

Other Games / Why are some game labelled 'clones' and others not?
« on: August 01, 2016, 03:22:40 am »
Why is it that new games that derive from a game in a genre that has few other games in it are often labelled mere 'clones' (often with a negative meaning)?

While on the other hand we have genres that literally churn out hundreds of virtually identical games each year, like shooters football games or racing games?

It seems people will only accept games deriving from genre defining ones after there have been several other games doing the same.

Dwarf fortress also suffered from this badly. Every game derived from it was instantly branded a ripoff and now it seems to become less as more similar games are made.

General Discussion / Patents
« on: April 29, 2016, 05:31:14 am »
Let's talk about the lovely world of patents!

I came across an article from 2012, stating how tech companies like Apple and Google spend more money on patent lawsuits than on actual RnD. I can't imagine the situation has much improved since then.

http://www.androidauthority.com/google-apple-spend-patents-120824/

So what do we do?

Cut patent duration? Abolish patents all together? Do nothing?

General Discussion / Armed conflicts and democracy
« on: March 30, 2016, 05:29:24 pm »
I was following the news about Syria and Libya and how the armed insurrections basically turned them into failed states.

Than the following question came into my mind:

Has ANY long term insurrection ever led to the establishment of a democracy in a country?

The only examples I can think of are wars of independence , but those are kind off another category. I can't come up with any example of something like that happening in another scenario.

General Discussion / Gender quotas
« on: January 13, 2016, 09:05:38 am »
After such a quota already being introduced in Germany, Norway, Italy, France, and Spain the Dutch labour party announced that they want to impose a gender quota for women on business boards.
They want to impose a minimum quota of 30% for women in top business positions.

I found myself oddly infuriated by this proposal and I see it as nothing but a discriminatory policy targeting men.

People should be given positions because of their qualifications, not because they have a certain gender.

Discuss.

edit: clarified a bit

General Discussion / Conspiracy theories and the failure of reason
« on: October 25, 2015, 08:59:15 am »

I would like to start a topic about WHY so many people believe in conspiracy theories that (in my opinion) or completely devoid of fact and why reason is failing to resolve the debate.

Things that I have seen recently:

International space station doesn't exist
Holocaust did not happen
Moon landing are a hoax
9/11 conspiracy shit
Nukes don't exist

and of course:

The flat earth society - http://www.theflatearthsociety.org/cms/

I will take the flat earth society as an example. If you take a look at those forums you can see how many people try to come up with completely sound evidence of why the earth is round, only to be refuted by arguments such "did you witness that yourself" personal attacks, statements that the used sources are not accurate or simply by ignoring entire arguments and focusing on details. etc. etc.

You will see the same in virtually any other conspiracy discussion.

Does this demonstrate a failure in reason to triumph over ignorance and fallacies?

General Discussion / On the acceptance of statements and the burden of proof
« on: September 19, 2015, 07:58:21 am »

I would like to start a small discussion about what we accept as truth and in particular relating to a certain set of statements.
There is a large group of statements that have no proof both for or against them and I would like discuss on how to treat these statements and the associated burden of proof.

Lets start with the following statement which has no proof in favour of it NOR against it.

Statement A

Should we accept statement A or not?

Should we accept statement B if it also has no proof for or against?

Statement C is in direct conflict with statement A and once again has no proof either way.

Do we accept C or not?

should all statements in this category be treated in the same way?

Does it stand to reason to reject all these statements because accepting them all is impossible due to conflicts?

Do things change if we are not talking about accepting these statements but the ACTING upon them?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/news/11015672/Wikipedia-refuses-to-delete-photo-as-monkey-owns-it.html

An interesting legal question concerning a monkey that steals a camera from a photographer and the photographer claiming the copyright.

A lot of people seem to say that the photo is public domain because they say Slater isn't the creator and the monkey can't own copyright.

Before giving my personal opinion I would like to ask what you think about this issue?

General Discussion / Forum atmosphere
« on: January 02, 2014, 09:05:59 pm »
After wandering some time on other forums I could not help but notice the different atmosphere present on other forums. The most obvious difference seems to be the abundance of raging, spam, trolling and an oddly large number of opinions not backup up by fact or reason. This is accompanied by an army of moderators trying to keep everything in check (and surprisingly often abusing the power).

Of course I do not want to sound elitist, but the atmosphere seems to be way more relaxed here.

So how do these forums keep so relatively free from rage, troll and spam with only Toady and Threetoe as moderators?

DF Gameplay Questions / Destroying stuck object
« on: August 16, 2013, 04:13:31 pm »
I am currently trying to build a magma lift using minecarts, but one of the carts got stuck on the bottom floor because of an roller setting error. The problem is (because the cart is filled with magma?) My dwarfs won't touch the cart or de-construct the roller it is stuck on even though I drained the floor of magma. Is there any way I can manually destroy the minecart? I don't mind cheating.

DF Gameplay Questions / Track building macro?
« on: August 13, 2013, 09:28:04 am »
Hey guys, I am trying to build a magma elevator in my latest fort using minecarts. But since it is going up 100+z levels designating gets tedious fast and its easy to make a mistake. I finally understand how to use macro tools such as DF designator for the ramps, but building the impuls ramps requires me to designate corners and removing the extra bit of track this creates, as the next bit of track needs to be a corner again. Is there any way I could automate this track laying proces?

Other Games / battleships forever
« on: September 17, 2012, 10:24:03 am »
Does anyone still play this game? The old thread is 3 years old. I always thought it was kinda a niche game, and that it would retain some popularity over the years. But it seems the official forums are pretty dead.

Anyway, I wanted to share some shippies I made with you
