DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Forge adamantine cap... from cloth?!
« on: August 05, 2009, 02:45:36 pm »
I'm not certain if this is a bug, or not...

I have layered armor on my duo of triple-legendary champion swordsdwarves. It used to be steel plate over steel chain, with a steel chain cap. I replaced the plate with adamantine, and now was in the process of making adamantine chain armor to replace the steel (so they'd move faster, essentially).

Oddly, though, when I try to forge adamantine caps the way you'd forge chain caps at the forge, it cancels and says I need adamantine cloth to make them!

Is there simply no adamantine chain cap, or is this just a minor oversight in the reactions calling for the wrong resource? If I make the caps, will they be armor, or clothing?

Well now this is weird. My fortress has been around quite a while now, with a pretty respectable amount of generated wealth. Megabeasts have become pretty fond of showing up. 5 dragons, titans, giants, etc.

This is a first, though. The latest dragon to show up is already tamed! (tame) tag and all!

Here I was expecting to snag it in a cage trap so I could tame it, and it walks right over the traps, waltzes past my troops (at this point, I was having an "oh crap, oh crap" moment thinking it was going to turn my meeting hall into a hellish inferno) only to join my dwarves in the exterior meeting area... and chill out with them.

Talk about an anticlimax! Convenient, though. I chained her in the entryway with a platinum chain.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Raw Clear Glass can't be cut?
« on: February 16, 2009, 04:51:33 pm »
I'm training a gem setter, and decided I might as well graduate them from cutting and encrusting things with green glass, to clear glass.

So, I make a couple dozen pieces of raw clear glass. The problem is, it doesn't show up in the jeweler's workshop menu. I can't even cut it, let alone encrust anything with it. The glass is there in the stockpile next to the jeweler's, it's not forbidden, it's accessible, it's not showing TSK, not hidden... and yet, I can't use it at all.

I'm confused. Either I'm doing something entirely new wrong, or this is a bug. Anyone have any ideas?

DF General Discussion / Failed artifacts.

Let us say, hypothetically, that once in a while a fey mood dwarf's skills just aren't quite up to snuff... and this life's work that they set upon doesn't turn out quite as they had hoped.

Why don't we find some examples of what it'd look like for a fey mood dwarf to pull a Molyneux!

I'll start:

"The Board of Poking"
This is an oak mace. All craftsdwarfship is of the lowest quality. It menaces with spikes of steel. It is encirlcled with bands of filth.

I wonder what...

A glorious red dragon appears. It has made a name for itself, and has no wounds. I send the dwarves all inside, expecting perhaps to catch it within my weapon traps. Sadly, this is in vain.

Everyone gets inside safely, and the dragon makes a beeline for my chained dogs. So far, pretty predictable. What happens next, however, defies beleif. After incinerating the dogs, the first thing the dragon does is destroy the screw pump I had used to fill my moat with magma.

That I might have expected, even. Stupid, but it makes sense with a building destroyer.

What happens next, however, does not make sense. After destroying the pump, the dragon enthusiastically charges right into the magma... deliberately sprinting into it until he's swimming in 7/7 magma, which then kills him. Now I don't even get to collect his bones or his body, or attempt to fight him  :-[

Mister dragon, you are a retard, and I hate you.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / I must have a damn fine fortress.
« on: December 23, 2008, 02:34:33 am »
During a renovation project involving making a new, more organized dining room I accidentally marked roughly a dozen masterwork stone tables and chairs for dumping, into the magma pipe.

My legendary stonecrafter faced art defacement, again and again, and again...

He's still ecstatic. I'm stunned, my heart sank at the notices as I expected an instant tantrum as a result of so many masterworks being lost all at once. He's in the middle of my meeting area, he could have killed a dozen people if he'd went berzerk.

(part of me is disappointed that he didn't, though. Bloodshed is pretty fun)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Damned ambushes
« on: November 30, 2008, 08:43:58 am »
This is getting frustrating.

Every time the dwarven caravan arrives, 3 or 4 ambushes show up the very same instant... and proceed to immediately charge into position to where the dwarven caravan has a 0% chance of arriving without losses.

And, of course, once they take losses, even if it's just one pack animal... the 6 wagons that arrived beforehand refuse to trade. I could offer them a solid platinum wagon encrusted in diamonds and they'd still throw a fit over that lost straggler and refuse to trade.

How can I drive off these damned ambushers before they rape the caravan? I need rock crystal from the caravan to satiate my bloody mayor and none of the other caravans will import that for me. My fortress is perfectly secure guarded by marksdwarves and two small squads of champions (maces and spears), but I can't possibly attempt to defend every possible caravan entry point and every possible route from there to my fortress.

DF Suggestions / Different finder syntax
« on: November 30, 2008, 12:25:21 am »
tl;dr- give the finder the option to choose either a bottomless pit OR a chasm, magma pipe OR pool, cave river OR cave pool

The finder is really useful, but the menu layout is less than optimal, requiring that sometimes you must perform several entire searches with several minor alterations to settings in order to find what you want.

Specifically, this:

Say I want either a chasm or a bottomless pit and have no preference. I can't tell the game that, if I get a partial match because I chose one I have to attempt an entire search again trying the other.

Rather than have toggles laid out as:
Chasm: yes/no/na
Pit: yes/no/na
The menu should be constructed in such a way as to be
Chasm/Pit: chasm/pit/either/na

That really simple change of syntax, made for tubes/pools as well as chasms/pits just about doubles the effective usefulness of the site finder and makes it far more user-friendly, too. It is a far more natural and elegant syntax. It has absolutely no drawbacks to make it inferior to the current system, since it can still do everything the current setup does... it just does things the current setup can't do as well, as well as doing some of the same things with increased efficiency.

This would be a huge timesaver and a relatively simple change.

Basically if we want to screen for a Chasm OR a Pit... or a Pipe OR a Pool... we can't. It's impossible, the only option is an XOR which requires several searches. This alteration would remedy that.

DF General Discussion / Running DF from a thumb drive
« on: November 15, 2008, 08:09:46 am »
I'm doing a bit of traveling and, not having a laptop (with my desktop heavily entrenched and firmly rooted with more wires than I care to count), I figured I would attempt to take DF with me on a thumb drive. The directory is certainly small enough, and I'll have a computer to play it on.

Has anyone actually tried to run the game from a thumb drive, though? I plan to try keeping my game firmly rooted on the drive and playing it directly from there.

I know USB is slower than the hard drive's SATA connection (much as a casual stroll is slower than riding a rocket), but I figure with a game like DF there isn't much need for file-access/file-swap speed. Has anyone tried this? Am I wasting my time?

I'll report results regardless.

(as an aside: why isn't anyone putting eSATA thumb drives on the market? That would be a hell of a neat thing to own)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / @$%# ambushes
« on: November 01, 2008, 03:34:57 am »
I don't know what it was that changed, but not since 0.38 have I had a siege. Every single time the goblins attack, it's an ambush. Whenever they bring a siege-sized force, it comes in the form of 3 or 4 simultaneous ambushes which somehow manage to smuggle 2 dozen goblins, unnoticed, right up to my fortress.

This is very annoying and feels unfair.

Yes, I am able to repel them nonetheless, but it feels like getting cheap-shotted when, despite preparing for attack with knowledge learned by experience, you are forced to lose dwarves because the game seemingly just cheats.

Have a spine, you goblin pigs. Bring a darn siege, for once!
