DF General Discussion / Re: *We need your help with game ending stress*
« on: November 07, 2019, 09:54:42 pm »
Thanks for responding everyone!  You have all been a real help moving DF forward to a more user friendly experience.  It was a real oversight not playing a game out multiple decades.  That will be corrected for sure, and we'll find more of these design problems and fix those too.  Please feel free to continue the discussion with thoughts and observations.

(Note: For the record, I should have said I gave my dwarves every kind of alcohol the wagons traded.  Acquiring every type of drink is an outstanding accomplishment!)

Hi Dorfs,

We started a thread a couple days ago about how to fix what was wrong will the stress system and got a lot of great feedback and I hope to continue to learn from it.  This question is more general.  How do we stop potential players from giving up right away.

We are aiming to fix as much of the UI and graphics issues as we can going into the Steam release coming up after the Villains release, so this question isn't so much about that.  What I mean is more basic than that.  For instance:

We never really knew that were-creatures were such a problem for new players.  This is because I think no one really knew it was a design flaw.  It's not a bug so we didn't pay attention to it.  It obviously ruined a lot of peoples fun.  They are set to come once you have 20 dwarves, which is way too soon.  We have since changed that for the next release.

That really spooked me as to what other game breaking design flaws are out there waiting to ruin everything.  Starting a fortress should be relatively easy given the right embark.  People will think these problems are features unless we get the right input.

Thanks again,
and Congratulations to the Generous.

Hi Dorfs,

We have been going through some extensive testing to find the biggest problems for new (and old!) players that make them give up in frustration.  Most of these people don't bother giving us any feedback, which is understandable.  The game just sucks and why play?  We need your help to nail down what exactly is going on.

While we are working on every problem we can find, this thread is specifically for problems with the stress system.  There are a spattering of reports that come up on Reddit and other forums from people talking about how the stress system is so screwed up the game is unplayable.  I haven't found this to be the case so I need your help!

I have a fort that is 3 years old and has every possible stress reliever.  Plenty of taverns with every type of alcohol.  Three different taverns and temples.  New clothes.  All sorts of trinkets and trash for them to acquire.  Lavish meals.  You get the picture.

Now the negative side:  I attacked the goblins and in return weathered three sieges of over 100 goblins total.  I killed them all with trained and iron armored dwarves with only a few injuries.  Then I had my entire fortress run out and pick up the bodies.

The results were as follows:  Three dwarves went into a depression.  Some soldiers suffered post traumatic stress.  And one dwarf threw a fit and went to jail.

This kind of result isn't bad.  We want this.

I want to know what kind of play style is causing people to quit in frustration.

We are aware of socialization problems.  I haven't seen a game ending problem here, but these will definitely be addressed at some point.

This is the kind of problem we want solved: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=171185.msg7839740#msg7839740

We really don't want “a cancer of red arrows”

Help us find out what's going on and we will attempt to fix it!

DF Announcements / Re: Tales Foretold: Queens and Kings, A Threetoe Story
« on: November 28, 2018, 12:05:03 am »
Thanks to everyone for reading my stories.  Tales Foretold is a setting that Tarn and I invented for a video game that we never finished.  The stories that we've labeled "Tales Foretold" recount the official events from that multiverse.  The characters are derived from the other Threetoe Stories and the thousands of short story segments I came up with for the Ascii Art Rewards.  Although the characters are basically the same, they exist in a parallel plane of existence broken off from the rest reality during the First Nightmare Apocalypse.  Only the stories labeled Tales Foretold have true consistency.

Death Dragon got the ages right to the extent they have been revealed.  The final age is called "The Waning"

It's been a pleasure to entertain.

DF General Discussion / Re: Congratulate Threetoe on his Marriage
« on: August 03, 2017, 02:55:45 pm »
Annie and I are very grateful for the congratulations and support we have received for our marriage and over the years.  I never thought I would be able to make a living just through creative endeavors.  You made that possible!  Annie is starting a new blog about True Crime, politics, and life as a Native American.  So now we will both be authors!

The wedding was a big success.  Annie and her cousin put the whole thing together.  It was at Troll Haven Farms, in Sequim WA, a very dwarfy venue.  Afterward we had a mini honeymoon in the San Juan Islands up north.  Eventually we hope to go to Spain, but that will have to wait until next year.

Thanks again, for everything you've done for us!

Thanks to everybody for reading!  It was such a shame when Tales Foretold imploded and it's great to make something out of all the work we put into it.  The original idea was to make a trilogy of stories highlighting the different ages in the game.  If everything works out it will all be part of Dwarf Fortress anyway!  If you can't wait for the next installment, I definitely recommend giving to Bay 12 and receiving a story reward.  That is where I come up with my best stuff and you can have it first!

DF General Discussion / Re: The "Get Better Zach" Thread.

Thanks everybody for your support!

I'm doing a lot better.  I've been home for about 3 days and have already written 11 new story rewards though I'm still about a month behind.  Soon we will head over to the island and catch up on the crayon drawings too.  Every day I feel a bit stronger and hopefully I'll be able to to start driving again.  I'm really in awe of how patient you guys are with the project and I'm grateful for everything you have done for us.

I had to delete a bunch of nazi images.  Please don't post these, because they upset people.

When I said it was faster I meant wait till you have 256 dwarfs,
plus pets, wildlife, caravan, and huge goblin invasion,
and its still totally playable.

I had to remove some sexually oriented content and bad words.  Don't do that.

It was just rage, but I wasn't being Homophobic. Don't know who or care why, but I have seen worse then what I had said left alone as what it was, Rage....

You used homophobic, graphic, sexually oriented language, and if Toadyone had been the one to catch you, you'd have been muted for a week.  Something to think about.

I had to remove several posts of a homophobic derail.

Let me know if there is more trouble.
