So I've got a hospital set up. It's small but fairly well-stocked, with beds and a table and a traction bench. The chest is loaded with as many supplies as I can spare from the main stockpile. There's a well to clean water right outside (it's a well I'm quite proud of, but that's not relevant here). One of my migrants is a trained doctor with solid skills in diagnostics and treatments, so I made him chief medical dwarf. Seasons passed and the hospital went unused.

Then one day, a giant toad appeared in the caverns. It jumped some of my dwarfs, and while most acquitted themselves well against the creature one of my miners got somewhat mauled. She got a mangled eye and a broken leg. The CMD was nearby and hauled her up to the hospital, which was great! What happened next, not so much; he decided to run off and do other jobs. I canceled those jobs several times but he always found something else to do. I tried going into the hospital menu and making the CMD a diagnostician. He continued to ignore the wounded miner. I made him a doctor and assigned a couple of random dwarfs to diagnostics just to try and improve the odds of someone getting to work. One of the new diagnosticians moved to the hospital but just hung out with no job, the others continued doing fortress tasks. Around this point my miner got out of bed, cleaned herself at the well, and returned to work with a health screen still showing injuries.

I'm not really sure what to do here. I thought my hospital was set up properly but when my fort finally had injuries everyone seemed to decide it wasn't worth bothering with. What should I do?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Metalsmithing bug? Or feature?
« on: December 22, 2022, 05:09:52 pm »
I wasn't sure whether or not to report this on the tracker, so here goes.

I'm playing the Steam version, having a lot of fun but my DF knowledge is extremely out of date; I never really got around to updating from 40d. So it's taking me a while to get situated but in my second Autumn on this fort I've finally set up a forge. I go into the Weapons & Ammunition menu planning to make some bolts or maybe some spears, but I paused when I noticed something very odd.

Most metals were not listed in the menu at all; in fact the only options were iron, copper, bronze, steel, bismuth bronze, and adamantine. Except, that's not quite true. There were a great many options listed that I had never heard of, and apparently are quite spoilerific according to a friend on Discord.

Is this normal? Again, I haven't played since 40d but I'm pretty sure it was possible to use a much greater variety of metals in the old days, and there certainly wasn't all this other stuff.

Life Advice / Need a new tablet because mine is junk.
« on: May 03, 2021, 03:27:58 pm »
To expand on the thread title, my old tablet has reached the end of its useful life. It was never very good, and it's been declining for years with vast chunks of storage taken up by unviewable files, erratic battery life, and a tendency to just kinda fukkin' die without warning mid-use. I kept it around though, because it could still play audiobooks which are my main source of entertainment while I'm working (I drive tractor-trailers).

Well, no more. My tablet is now so old and crappy that the Audible app no longer works on it. I haven't been able to download or listen to any audiobooks in over a month and I'm missing my stories (I was about to start Return of the King!). The only other device I have is my phone, which is about as old as the tablet (but less crap) and is needed for work - I need the battery life and I need to keep it untethered from the truck's stereo.

Basically, I'm tired of being stuck with the radio when it's far too easy for me to drive out of signal range of any stations I know. I need something that can download and play Audible audiobooks. I don't need or want a data plan; I have wifi at home for downloading things. It doesn't have to be very powerful and I'm certainly not looking to drop a grand or so on the latest iPad or whatever. I'm hoping you fine folks have some suggestions.

Tomrik's Hollow.

A bustling community in the Northern Reaches, ringed by stone walls to ward away the occasional rebel group or beastman raid, and surrounded by farmland to the east and the Dark Wood to the west.
Founded by and named for the great hero Gregorius Tomrik, it has grown from a single muddy street into the center of local commerce and culture. His descendant, Gunther Tomrik, rules the town as lord.
Nominally still part of the Empire, Tomrik's Hollow finds itself mostly standing on its own. Aside from the great coastal city of Gateway, there exists no other significant military force in the region.
This far from the Alabaster Throne, the chaos and upheaval caused by the orc uprising is almost nonexistent. People go about their business as usual, just with perhaps a bit more apprehension than normal.
This, as with so many things, is about to change.

The Dusty Duck was a perennial favorite among the locals and vagabonds of Tomrik's Hollow. Its drinks weren't the best, but nor were they the cheapest. The food was adequate, but neither particularly moldy nor particularly exquisite. The wenches, while pretty enough, were not for hire like in a couple of the grungier watering holes along the docks. But it was the oldest tavern/inn in town, and that lent it a certain prestige that none of the other establishments could match.

The tavern was lively on this fine Summer evening. A group of halflings from Good Fortune were singing (loudly and out of tune) around an extinguished fireplace. The serving girls were kept busy bringing tankards of ale and plates of food to a number of tables. A dwarf sat on one end of the bar, examining a strange tome. The bartender nodded welcome to a well-built woman in a red cloak while completely missing another, younger-seeming woman that managed to slip in unnoticed.

Everyone gave the large orc in the corner a wide berth. Although she was alone, and the majority of the orc rebels were raising havoc down south, no one wanted to set this one off.

Imrak, Raina, Maraline, and Hate are in!

The Empire is crumbling.
The Shadow draws near.
And in the outskirts of Tomrik's Hollow, a farmer is convinced that someone is stealing his goats.

Take Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, mix with Dungeons & Dragons (mostly 5E), add in a splash of Darkest Dungeon and a pinch of Numenera, and what comes out is Shadow of the Demon Lord. It's a grimdark take on fantasy tabletop roleplaying games, where casualties are high, the monsters are vicious, and sanity is fleeting. Gameplay is relatively simple, with just four characteristics and a small collection of derived stats, and no skills whatsoever other than what can be assumed with a little common sense. It also has one of the more interesting character advancement systems I've seen in a tabletop game. I want to give it a shot.

I'm looking for four to five players willing to start as level-0 scrubs. This game will be run in a play-by-post format, right here on Bay 12. This means that I will probably have to do all of the dice rolling, but unfortunately my schedule is a little loopy so I can't really commit to live sessions. Rolling the dice is a small price to pay.

Spoiler: Who are the players? (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Sample Character Sheet (click to show/hide)

Since this game is pretty new on the forums (a casual search seems to show that no one has tried to run SotDL here), I'll give prospective players at least a week, possibly two, to get their sheets together. Obviously if there is a glut of characters by the end of the first week there won't be any reason to wait longer.

Send me a PM if you don't have access to the core rulebook, and if anyone needs help with character creation, please don't hesitate to ask! Good luck, have fun, and remember: there are far worse fates than death.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

Discord server.

Age of Rebellion is a tabletop game system by Fantasy Flight Games, set in the Star Wars universe. Players join the Rebel Alliance in the struggle against the Galactic Empire, gaining resources and allies, engaging in dogfights and shoot-outs, and every once in a while even discovering immense potential hidden within themselves.

This game will be run primarily on Discord, in a play-by-post fashion. In other words there will not be set dates and times for play; rather, people can post when they're available. I'm hoping this will allow things to move a bit more smoothly and avoid the common problem where one or more players have frequent scheduling issues.

When does this take place?
At the start of the game, the Battle of Yavin took place eight standard months ago. For reference, the events of The Empire Strikes Back take place roughly 3 years after the BoY.

Who are the players?
Regardless of previous experience, the players are fresh new recruits to the Rebel Alliance. They have joined up with a small but determined cell that is operating in and around the Arkanis Sector.

At the start of the game, players are serving aboard a rebel corvette on a supply run.

Character Creation
  • Five active characters MAX. Additional characters can be waitlisted.
  • All careers from Age of Rebellion are allowed.
  • Careers from Edge of the Empire may be allowed, with GM permission. If you use one of these careers, do not use the Obligation system.
  • No character is allowed to have Force sensitivity at character creation.
  • All species are allowed, with the following exceptions:
    Gank
    Hutt
Corellian or Mandalorian Humans (you can be a human from those societies, but use the default Human species)
Chiss (not actually banned, but their rarity in the greater galaxy and the fact that they're actually on decent terms with the Empire means that a prospective Chiss player would need a very convincing backstory).
  • Every player starts with 10 Duty.
  • Do not choose anything from the Rebellion Resources section. You will not be starting with any of those. As compensation, every character may choose 1000 credits worth of gear to start with as opposed to the normal 500.
  • I highly recommend that the lion share of your starting XP go towards improving your characteristics. Once your character is finalized, you can no longer spend XP to improve those.
  • Character sheets may be done in plain text or by using the Mythweavers EotE sheet. Either way, they must be posted here if you want to be considered.

Good luck, have fun, and may the Force be with you all!

Intro cinematic!

Welcome friends, foes, felines and fogies! It is with the greatest of grandeur that I grant this fine gift. A playthrough of the most perfectly playable parade of puns, presented in a procession of painstakingly prepared pictures! I speak of the one, the only...

First released in Japan way the heck back in 2009 (2010 for the rest of the world), this is the ninth main-series installment in the long-running Dragon Quest/Warrior series. It was the first one released for a handheld system. It was also, for some hideous unknowable reason, the last main-line game to be released internationally. It is also rather fantastic.

DQ9 was something of an experiment in many ways. It was the first game to feature enemies wandering the map, as opposed to invisible random encounters. It was designed with multiplayer in mind using the DSi's Wi-Fi capabilities (though it was still perfectly serviceable as a single-player game, don't get me wrong). There were bonus dungeons accessible via Wi-fi. It featured hefty amounts of character customization: every party member, from the Main Character to their followers, can be extensively customized. Hair color, vocation, even clothing! Yes, in another first for the series your equipment choices are reflected in your character model! Basically, it was a fantastic game and deserves a Let's Play.

The series is most distinguishable for its character art, done primarily by Akira Toriyama. You might recognize the name from his other major, arguably most famous creations: Dragonball and Dragonball Z. It is also, at least in the English translations, chock-full of alliteration, puns, and general wordplay. If that sort of thing offends you, I suggest leaving now. It will only get worse better as time goes by.

Lovely artwork on the main menu. I'm not playing on a DSi, and even if I were the servers have long gone defunct, so the second option is entirely useless. That's okay. What we really want to do is create a new adventure log.

Character creation! We will need a main dude or dudette to take through the whole story. We'll be able to make other dudes or dudettes later, but for now we're focused entirely on the Main Character. Let's walk through the various options real quick.

Height! The differences are in all honesty pretty slim. Ladies and gentlemen run at (exactly?) the same heights.

Hair style! Now we're getting somewhere! Lots of options, males and females get different choices.

Hair color! Gois and goils get the same options.

Faces! Lookit all the choices available!

Skin colors! You're not going to get any crazy alien skintones out of these, but there's a nice mix of shades.

Eye color! More noticeable with some faces than with others!

And finally, a name! This Vegeta-looking dude, as well as anyone else, can have 8 characters max in their name.

Once the main character is designed and named, the story can begin!

OOC thread is here!

FEF: Scum of the Empire

Prologue: The Reprieve

Castle Konrad, Western Diodormant. Two people, dressed in finery, speak in low voices as the sun dips below the horizon.

"My love...are you certain that this plan of yours is necessary?"

"Dearest, I wish it wasn't. Unfortunately, we simply don't have the soldiers available to undertake a mission like this."

"But to rely on these traitors...they're the lowest of the low, love. If they betray you--"

"We'll cross that bridge if we get to it. The fact remains that they're the only chance we have of retaking Castle Eastland."

"...very well. Get them ready. I want them on their way by midnight."

In the courtyard of Castle Konrad, there lies a squat structure made of stone brick. The only entrance into this building is through a stout wooden door bound in iron, secured with a lock of dwarven manufacture. A large hooded man sits on a bench just beside the door, sharpening an equally large axe with a whetstone. The man is happy. His axe might get to finally see some use in the morning. Maybe sooner, if the building's occupants somehow manage to contrive an escape attempt.

Inside the building lounge ten prisoners. Brought together from all corners of the Empire, shuffled about by chance and circumstance until they wound up here, of all places. Surrounded by strangers. Listening to the sound of the sharpening axe outside. Knowing that the end is just about at hand.

Everyone is in!

First time GMing a game, please be gentle :P

As far as wars go, this most recent one had been pretty bad.

Never mind the fact that much of the Empire lay in ruins. Never mind that countless families have been torn apart (in some cases quite literally). Never mind that anyone half-way sane could tell you that there was still plenty of fighting to do in order to clear out remnant enemy forces.

No, the thing that made this war the worst one is that you had done something wrong. And you had gotten caught.

As the invasion had approached its blood-soaked climax, officers all over the Empire had begun to impose harsher and harsher penalties on any number of infractions, hoping to keep their shaken soldiers and panicky civilians in line. What would have resulted in some time in the stockades in peacetime, maybe five lashes at worst, now resulted in ten. Then twenty. Then lockup. Then executions.

You had been busted near the very end of the war, as the enemy marched on the capitol and no one was certain what would happen next. In some ways, this was a blessing: not even the most punctilious, by-the-book sort of officer was going to delay rushing to the Empress' aid in circumstances like this, not even to hang the worse scum imaginable. Thus, your sentence was put on hold. You got a few more weeks to live. After the war had been won, those weeks stretched into months. You were moved from one brig to another in search of an officer with sufficient free time to condemn your soul to the Abyss. You may have begun to wish that they'd just get it over with.

And so, as summer 201 AE approaches, you find yourself in a cell with some other luckless scum. Just waiting...and wishing that something would happen.

Yes, an FEF! Everyone likes these. Maybe this one will turn out okay.

General Discussion / Election Day, USA!
« on: November 08, 2016, 04:07:21 pm »
First off, THIS IS NOT A POLITICS THREAD. There's the general American Politics thread if you want to engage flamethrowers debate the merits of various candidates. This is purely a thread for today, the Presidential Election, and it should peacefully fall into the depths after a week or so.

So anyway, this is a happy little place to comment on (and commiserate over) the past few weeks. Did you vote? Will you vote? Were there any silly or amusing measures to vote on in your state? Are you munching popcorn from the safety of another country? Are you sick and tired of political ads?

And so on, and so forth. Have fun, and please don't summon the Toad.

Hello, and welcome! If you clicked on this, you probably know what's gonna happen here. For those of you who are lost, let me explain real quick.

Pokemon is a long-running series based on catching various critters (the eponymous pokemon) and making them fight each other to grow stronger. It has a fairly strong competitive scene.
Pokemon White is a 5th-generation game, originally released on the Nintendo DS alongside Pokemon Black.
A Nuzlocke is a sort of self-imposed "challenge run" of a Pokemon game, with the following immutable rules:
  • You must name each pokemon you acquire.
  • You may only get a single pokemon in each location. In addition, it must be the first pokemon you encounter in each area. If you fail to catch it, you forfeit that area's catch.
  • A pokemon that "faints" (reduced to 0 HP by any means) is actually considered "dead". It can never be used again.

In addition, I am appending the following rules (subject to change):
  • Shiny pokemon (those with a different color palette than normal, and extremely rare) are exempt from the one-per-area rule, and can be captured at any time.
  • Items (except items held by Pokemon) may not be used in battle.
  • If a poisoned pokemon falls to 1 HP outside of battle, it is considered fainted (and thus dead). Pokemon cannot normally faint outside of battle, you see. Apparently poison no longer deals damage outside of battle in Gen5. This rule is now void.
  • Whiting out (running out of usable pokemon) is considered an automatic game over while battling any wild pokemon or hostile trainers. Against friendly trainers, it merely results in the loss of the entire team.
  • The sole exception to the death rule is the first two battles, as your options are incredibly limited at that point and the Demon Murphy is a constant threat.

This will primarily be a screenshot LP, but I might throw in some of my infamous Paint monstrosities when I feel like it. Consider this your only warning.

Y'all ready? Let's begin!

What is The Next World?
Well, here's the blurb on Steam's store page:
Quote
Welcome to The Next World - a strategic visual novel by Illuminated Games, telling the story of a crashed colony ship and its ragged group of survivors, trying to make a new life on the wrong planet.

TNW is a visual novel/strategy hybrid inspired by The Banner Saga, King of Dragon Pass and Oregon Trail, with an emphasis on planning and decision-making over combat. Keep as many colonists alive as possible by making the tough decisions which will determine how your adventure unfolds. Build colony structures, salvage wreckage, resolve problems with multiple branching outcomes, and manage your colony's dwindling supplies; all while playing through an intense story of political intrigue, sabotage, desperation and survival, by writer Ryan A. Span (FRONTIERS, Mount&Blade, Euclidean).
What does all this mean in practice? Not a clue! This is the very first time I've played this game, and I suppose it can serve as a combination first-impression/review/LP. I'll be taking screenshots as I go, so hopefully I won't miss too much.

I might ask for viewer input sometimes, depending on how things play out, but I intend to be as blind as possible.

Let's get started...

Life Advice / Need a new browser :I
« on: July 05, 2014, 12:19:39 am »
I've been using the Nightly build of Firefox for a couple of years, and I've had no complaints.

EXCEPT in the last few days. It's borked. My settings involving tabs don't work, and for some reason it seems to think that it needs to get involved when I open PDFs (including ones saved to my hard drive) and I can't get it to stop. I mean, I can have the browser closed. I try to open a PDF saved to my computer. Nightly then opens and asks if I want to open or save the PDF I'm trying to open, as if I just downloaded it ::)

So I think it is time for something new. I want a browser that runs reasonably well, has Firefox's functionality. A good number of add-ons, especially an AdBlock-like, are a must. It should not have difficulty with things like Flash or Unity Web Player.

I'm an idiot who forgot computer basics.

Hello good people! I finally have a computer and a connection that is (theoretically) capable of streaming video, which is something I've wanted to do for quite some time. Right now I'm still testing things and seeing just how big a hit my computer takes while running this sort of thing. If you would be so kind as to go here and check it out, I'd appreciate it ^-^

Life Advice / Shopping for a gaming laptop
« on: March 08, 2014, 04:25:04 pm »
Hello good residents of Bay 12! My current laptop is horribly insufficient for...just about most games, really. The utter lack of a decent dedicated graphics card is the primary obstacle to playing things; more than one game fails to read a DirectX-capable card and shuts down immediately.

SO! I'm looking for a laptop which would be capable of running modern games at a reasonable quality level. However, I would also like it to be capable of running games like DF (which can only use the one processor), and I'm not sure if it would be possible to fill both goals at the same time. Budget is somewhere less than $1,000 at the moment, but that should be enough to outperform what I have now.
Spoiler: Current specs (click to show/hide)

As a final note: Smartass comments about getting a desktop instead are not welcome. I travel a lot and desktops are not practical.
