ah, small moments of tragedy like this are why I play Dwarf Fortress. . thanks for sharing these detailed accounts

this looks an embark that really displays all seasons, from summer to freezing winter, which is very nice indeed!

Yes.   And those little moments, the tiny tragedies, disappear in a large Fortress.  And yeah, I wanted seasons.  Normally I pick a warm climate for year round fruit and food and fresh water.  But I wanted to try something a little harder.

Dwarf Fortress - The Town Of Coldness - The Bounty of Spring


Lor Diamondtools, the NEW Book Keeper, started out in late spring with some brewing.    Fruit was now available, with the coming of true spring, and she was eager to turn it into booze. 

While the passing of the old Book Keeper was a sad piece of news there was some good news from it.  The Hospital was now almost finished.  It had three beds, a table, a chest, and would soon have a Traction Bench.


And a Soap Maker's Workshop had been built and produced plenty of emu soap!


The tavern, now open to the public, was already drawing visitors also.  In fact three humans had come, some asking for information about Glovedgood, but all were enjoying themselves in the tavern.  One was singing while the others acted as a...well..band in a way.

When not working on the books she brewed, made wooden bolts, prepared raw fish, and pressed dimple cups for dye.

There was a announced of a raven attack but it seemed to be from the lone suvivor.  And a heavily wounded raven at that.  Pretty harmless on its own.

Then summer came.  And while she had been busy a lot HAD been done in the background.


The barracks had been worked on and was close to being finished. 


A second pen had been dug out for the birds and both pens had four nest boxes, two female chickens, two female tuckeys, and two males of each type.  And the pigs had also been locked in for good measure.  They would wander so.


The front 'door' had two doors, some traps, and three drawbridges.


The well, with the underground water tank and 'pipes', was alsmost finished.  And the tavern was looking like a tavern.


Outside all the birds that is.  They were free roaming future meals as only the ones in the pens would be egg layers.  The rest would be food.  And in the case of the turkeys - leather.

There was also a lot of fresh fish and mussels now being brought in from the river. 

And soon there would be caravans.  Trade goods would be exchanged and maybe some more migrants would come?  There was still some slots open for new citizens.

Dwarf Fortress - The Town Of Coldness - The Humans Have Come


With the coming of early summer of the Year 151, Rakust Starttrades the Gem Cutter, had joined a few other citizens in fishing in the Fishing Zone.  A part of the river close to the barn and the entry way to the Town of Coldness. 


Her head was clean shaven, as was the style at the time, and on it she wore a Rhyolite crown.  The folks of the outpost were starting to collect items of value, to wear or keep, as the artists started to make crafts.

It wasn't very valuable but it was nice to own something of her own.


Like her bedroom.   A small room, with a smoothed floor, a bed, a chest, and a cabinet.  Nothing too wild.  But it was her's.   And soon she would have stuff and outfits to store in it.

And it was right next to the Jeweler'a Workshop.  Where she worked when there was uncut gems to work on.


On the 11th of Hematite, while eating a prepared emu kidney roast in the Nut of Crafts, she was told that a human caravan from Beruoman had been spotted.  Time to trade!


The Leader decided to send a table cut black opal, a square brilliant cut black opal, and a trillion cut black opal to the Trade Depot.  Their combined valued would be more than 3000 credits. 

It was assumed that should be enough to buy up anything the colony REALLY needed.

The Broker, Id, was requested to come to the Depot.


She would learn later on that the idiot Bone Doctor, Litast, in placing the grate in the 'pipes' had trapped herself and would have to pull the grate out again.  This was the second dwarf to trap themself on the wrong end of the grate.

But she went back to fishing.  They only needed to carry THREE items to the Depot.  Most of the citizens just keep doing their jobs.

The Broker traded the opals for copper pick, a barrel of carrot wine, a silver maul, a bag of spinach seeds, a bin full of wool cloth, 25 bronze bolts, five fisher berries, five potato plants, ten strawberries, ten raspberries, five bilberries, five blackberries, five grapes, ten water buffalo cheese rounds, and a gneiss-bound codex.

That left the Trader 1010 credits of profit.  Which the human merchant, named Ozi Frameloaves, seemed very happy with.  Though, earlier, he had seemed a tad uneasy at all the black bear people bones.

Also Zasit, and some of those skilled at Hunting, had been picking on the emus again.  And had killed one and brought it back to the outpost.  More meat and soap.


After some more fishing Rakust grabbed a rhyolite mug and tried out the newly imported carrot wine.  Seemed nice.

Than mid summer came.  And not much had happened.  At least nothing bad.

Dwarf Fortress - The Town Of Coldness - Training


Likot Tamedconstruct, Miner and Former Surgeon, and girlfriend to Sazir Inkoceans was digging at the start of the mid summer month of Malachite.

She was working along side Kol Whippedspirit making a large chamber which was going to be the future library.  At least that was the rumor.

Also the Barracks had been finished and it was decided that about five of the members of the Diamond Weights would train in Slate, Malachite, and Sandstone.  That way they could help sow in the early months and reap in the late months.  And in winter at least five would train during the middle month.  This would leave early winter and late winter for the other squads.  Such as the Grizzly Lenses, the Messenger Ubbul, to train in the month of Moonstone. 

It seemed that outside of the Diamond Weight everyone else would be assigned one month in winter.   More to just keep them from becoming TOO rusty and make them feel good.

The humans announced they were getting ready to leave and it was noticed that no migrants had come.  As there were 18 citizens, and only room for 2 more, this wasn't a surprise.

Being a member of the Diamond Weights Likot picked up some gear.  A copper shield, a flask full of rum, a bone helm, bone gauntlets, bone leggings, a turkey leather armour, and a copper war hammer.  After eating of course.


By the time she entered the barracks she found her boyfriend Sazir, the Militia Commander, and Unib Oiledsiege already there and carrying out drills.

Soon they were joined by Thikut Armorstances, who had no gear at all.  Weird.

Funny enough, though there was only meant to be about 5 or so training more than 5 showed up.  Somehow the Leader's orders had been misunderstood.

9 more squads were made.  One dwarf squads.  Each assigned to train during the early winter season or the late winter season.

Then late summer came.  By the 1st of Galena little had been done around the outpost because the Diamond Weights had ALL been training.  Even with orders that not all WERE to train.

Because of this a lot of food went bad.  And the two walls needed to finish the water project have not been built yet.

The Leader wasn't mad.  He was just disappointed.

Wow.  The old military UI was so much better.  So the Train button is NOT to be touched.  I have to go straight to Schedule and do all the work there.  No touch AXE button.  AXE Button bad.  AXE overrides Schedule or something.  I don't know.

Dwarf Fortress - The Town Of Coldness - It Smells!


Zasit Versegems, Woodworker, member of the Diamond Weights, and killer of Black Bear Folks and harmless cow mooses, was planting seeds now that he had finished his training. 

It was the month of Galena, late summer, and things were looking up.  Kind of.


As of the 2nd of Galena there were 425 units of food, 772 units of drink, 251 seeds, 34 units of uncooked meat, 34 uncooked fish, 115 plants that had not been processed, cooked, or brewed.  And...others?

As he went about his business planting seeds, moving items around, and, of course, working with wood he heard a rumor.


Seems a human bard, by the name of Em Bowlpulley, had asked to become a resident to entertain the citizens and visitors at the Nut of Crafts.  And the request had been approved.

Which kind of weird because it didn't look like he had any skills.  On the other hand he seemed to know a few songs, poetry, and so on.  So maybe it was a good idea?

He was even given the dead ex-Book Keeper's room.

Zasit, to be honest, wasn't happy.  Many of his needs, such as to socialize, be creative, get stuff, and be with family, were not being met.  And much of the work wasn't being done.  Food spoiled, dead bodies, such as the ravens, were just left on the floor for all to see.  People were becoming upset.


Also the dead dwarf was still in the hospital.  Luckily, his memorial slab had been set up next to the empty coffin so there was no grumpy ghost groaning around the outpost.

And the well was STILL not finished.  The Leader really wanted it finished before the river froze again.  Dwarfs were cleaning themselves at a pond on one of the mountains.  They were not even using the nearby river.  They climbing the damn mountains.  So much time wasted. 

So when Autumn came on the 1st of Limestone and the dead dwarf was still in the hospital, and the well was still dry, and miasma was all over the place the Leader realized he might have to cut down the work orders a TAD.  It is said he just crossed out lot of jobs that were just not needed at the time.  Maybe that would help?

Dwarf Fortress - The Town Of Coldness - Autumn Comes


Dodok Diamondburied, Chief Medical Dwarf, Former Farmer and member of the Diamond of Sculpture, was harvesting plants.  In this case prickle berries from one of the farm plots in the barn. 

In the far distence he had heard a wolf.  Which was kind of funny as there had been no sightings of wolves.  Eh. 

After placing the berry in storage he went to festilize the field where they would be planting dimple cups.  He was using some potash they had been making at the Ashery.

He heard a rumor that ANOTHER human had turned in a petition.  Rakfil Catcrested, a Poet, was asking to become a resident.   She, the human, was welcomed.  Which meant the populace numbed 20.

He kept working on the fields.  Add potash, plant a spawn, add potash, plant a seed.


By the 8th of Limestone the tavern was VERY busy.  Very, very, busy.  And many wished to stay in the outpost.  But their petitions were turned down.  Again and again. 

On the 15th of Limestone the dwarven caravan from Tabariton had been spotted.  Along with the Liaison Bomrek Stinthadturel.  Trade.  Trade!  TRADE!

So many of bolts, the wooden ones anyway, were ordered to the Depot.  Along with three cut gems.

As the citizens moved goods to the Depot and reported the birth of more livestock the Leader met with Bomrek.  Seems the homelands wanted amulets.  As the artists could make amulets from wood, stone, or even bone that would not be a problem.

At the Depot the Broker had 3275 credits to work with.  He bought up a silver battle axe, a bin of cloth, 30 plump helmets, 5 strawberries, 10 tomatoes, 5 squashes, 5 muskmelons, 5 eggplants, 5 pineapples...whatever those were, 5 passion fruits, 5 raspberries, a crutch, and a copper stepladder.

Giving the Merchant about 1745 credits in profit.  Not bad.  He was very pleased.

While this was happening Dodok was enjoying a mug of prickle berry wine. 

Sadly, food was going bad again.  A whole bunch of cheese rounds had gone rotten.


On the 23rd of Limestone Dodok was in the tree gathering apricots while in a tree in the Gathering Zone.  Yes, his people loved the bright sun as they climbed from branch to branch...oh wait.  No, that's the human apes.


And it seemed somebody had moved Uzol to his coffin.


And as for the well...somebody had finished the walls and dug the channel needed to allow the water in.   So the water started to pour in right when mid autumn arrived.  And the source of the water froze.

The Leader was not pleased.  But if some of the water got to the well...

Dwarf Fortress - The Town Of Coldness - The Mystery


Swordtundra was pondering the mysteries of what the visitors were asking about.  Artifacts?  Cities?  People?

The Expedition Leader didn't look much different from when he had arrived in the Spring of the Year 150.  He now had a cool wound to show off.  And also he now wore military gear and carried a copper crossbow.  Just in case.

In addition to his old cave spider silk dress he also wore a pig tail cloak.  It could get damn cold in this region of the world.

Anyway, today on the 1st of Sandstone, he was on a mission.  To try to figure out what the heck the visitors were looking for.

He took some time to visit the tavern and listen in.  And took notes.

Most visitors were here to drink and sing and relax.  Others had goals.

For example a human Pikeman, named Kamca Sectknit, was looking for the location of Meetingloved the Right of Clenching.

As was a human Crossbowman named Ak Heavensmaroon.  And a human Spearman. 

Was it a artifact?   Sounded like a artifact.  Weird name though.  But should be easy to find within his small collection of scrolls, books, and paperwork.

He went to his bedroom and opened his chest.  He started to search for the name.

And he found it.  In the Year of 32 the Meetingloved the Right of Clenching was a legendary bronze crossbow.  Also known as Laraval Kirar Egast.


It had been created in Cutblockade by a dwarf named ushrir Bridgethrone, a Bowyer, who had become possessed.  As you do.  Of course he claimed it as a family heirloom.

In the Year 103, while defending Pillarclouted during the Crazed Assaults, he was killed and his crossbow taken away from him by a elf named Alala Velvetymauve.  Who was also the enemy who killed him and also ate his dead body.

"Ewww," muttered Swordtundra before continuing his research.

Seems the elf claimed it as a family heirloom. 

The elf fought in a few wars, broke a few hearts, and even wrote a few books.  It seemed he was alive and well living in a place called Passequals as a Poet.  A old forest retreat he had settled in during the Year 144.

He had never married, had no kids, and only one kill to his name.  ushrir.

As the Leader placed the books and scrolls back into the chest and closed it he wondered WHY the humans were all coming to the Town of Coldness to ask about a artifact which was now in a elf settlement?  Did they do NO research?  Did they have no clues from their own legends and lore and libraries?  Humans HAD libraries, right?

And why were they trying to find a dwarf crossbow?  Surely they preferred long bows?  Was there a reward for it or something?

So the mystery was...kind of solved?

He shrugged and left his bedroom.  Back to work.  Hmmm...but maybe something to drink first?  Researching made one's throat dry!

Dwarf Fortress - The Town Of Coldness - Giant Black Bear


Thikut Armorstances, was a Carpenter and a member of the Diamond Weights.  He had been a former Woodworker before he had changed careers.  And he had killed one male emu and two ravens.

For a dwarf he was on the thin side. 

At the moment, at the beginning of mid autumn, he was working on a rock mug.

He enjoyed work.  It was the only thing he enjoyed at the moment.  He had not acquired anything for a long time and was lonely from being away from family.  Then there was the miasma.  Yuck.  And the dead ravens. 


With the coming of the middle month some of the Diamond Weights were drilling.

He was a member also but by the 7th of Sandstone he was outside gathering plants.  The water was frozen but the snows had not come yet.  So there was still plants and fruits to grab up.

By the 12th of Sandstone the merchants and their guards were leaving.  The Leader decided to leave the front doors open.  To allow visitors to come and go.  But they be locked if there were any more attacks.  Animal or otherwise. 

On the 14th Thikut was in the barn planting seeds.  Grape seeds.  He was looking forward to seeing if the outpost could brew up good wine.

The Leader announced that another workshop, a Stoneworker's Workshop, was going to be placed in the mines.  Close to the source of stone.  Which made sense.


As he was working Thikut heard a lot of noise from the tavern.  Seems he was missing a lot of fun.

Then there was an alarm from outside.  Seems the Traders had run into a...giant black bear.  The Leader ordered the tavern closed to visitors.  The doors would be closed for the rest of autumn and all of winter.

It worked kind of.  Some visitors left.  Some visitors stayed in the tavern.  At least the citizens were inside. 


And one of the agitated giant black bears had been trapped by one of the cages in the entry tunnel.  Seems it fell into the trap after being hit by one of the stone traps.  Once properly trained it could be butchered.

Cog Fencedashed was given the job of taming it.  He used prickle berries.  The bear seemed to like them.

As this was happening Thikut helped with the harvest.  But also took some time off to enjoy some dwarven wine.  Made by the local brewers.  What more could you ask for?

On the 22nd of Sandstone the Leader unlocked the outer door and watched as the visitors, and the outpost Liaison, all poured out of the outpost.  Before locking it up again.

The only problem with closing up the outpost like this was all the items and trade good still in the Depot.  It seems some items had been dropped by the Traders.  Had they fled because of the black bear?  There was the raven being a pest.  And now a eagle had joined the raven in the attacks.

The Leader decided to open the out door, again, as there seemed to be few wild animals outside.  The birds could be annoying but not really that dangerous.  So the citizens could get access to the Depot.

But there was a rumor that the Leader was working on the blueprints of a new UNDERGROUND Trade Depot.  So they could close it off to the outside world and get access to it from within.

And there was more reports of food going bad.  Maybe they were making TOO much food?  A interesting thought.

On the 1st of Timber late autumn came and the giant black bear was killed after being tamed just enough to be taken to its death.

Dwarf Fortress - The Town Of Coldness - Autumn Ends


Mebzuth Holdroof, was the outpost's Diagnostician, and a member of the Diamond Weights.  She had been a Former Mason and one of the original seven.


And at the moment, in late autumn, she was hauling a rock to the stockpile.  She was feeling great as she was drunk and was happy after learning more about fighting during the mid autumn's training.

She had also watched a performance, talked to a friend about their problems, and had some good memories.

She spent a lot of her time hauling stuff and making rock tables and rock chairs and so on.  She was still a Mason at heart.

Others were working on thrones, doors, mugs, and clothing.  Socks mostly.   And of course future trade goods.  Wooden amulets, rock amulets, and bone amulets.  All the amulets.


Then she was ordered to make some more rock mechanisms for the drawbridges to protect the underground Depot.

There were some new visitors.  Even with the tavern closed off to visitors.  Seems the new library had become a center of interest to the outside world.  Even though the one book the outpost had wasn't in it yet.  They hadn't put in the bookcases yet.


The old Depot had been pulled apart.  And now looked like a pile of junk.  Some of those items did NOT belong to the outpost.  As the Traders left some stuff when the animals started to act up again.  Looked like they left behind a lot of cheese. 

Would they blame the outpost?  They always blamed the site governments when things went wrong.  Animal attack?  Blame the site government.  Undead?  Blame the site government.  Titans?  Forgotten Beasts?  Invading armies?  Werebison?  Blame the site government!

After a nice sleep Mebzuth started working on making the potash from ash.  The fields would be allowed to rest during the winter season.  But the potash helped prepare them for spring.


By the end of autumn the Depot was almost done.  One bridge was finished and closed at least.

As winter came a bunch of one-dwarf squads were sent to the Barracks to drill.  The Chief Medival Dwarf, the Expedition Leader, Kol, and Ubbul all went to combat training.  This would help them gain some experience, gain a little happiness, and maybe help them survive future conflicts.  Also maybe burn off some of that fat many of the citizens were collecting.  Good food and lots of booze did that to a dwarf. 

As she went to fertilize the fields Mebzuth pondered what would happen during the winter season.

When would the snow come?  Would the Leader close off the outpost completely?  What animals would try to kill them now?  Would the elfs come to trade next year?  Would they be jerks?

Dwarf Fortress - The Town Of Coldness - Winter Comes Again


Sazir Ikoceans, Militia Commander of the Diamond Weights, Former Peasant and Fisherdwarf, and boyfriend of Likot, was carrying a Rhyolite door which needed to be installed.

At the moment he was not happy.  He was lonely and upset about not being able to pray to Alron.

He installed a few doors to keep himself busy.  Seems they had a lot of doors and they planned to use them.


The folks in the barracks had been joined by Urdim Griffonswords.  He was his own unit, named the Granite Clods, and he was practicing with his crossbow with a mixture of wooden and copper bolts.


Due to how the target range had been set up some bolts would NOT break and could be safety retrieved one floor below.  Though a wooden floor under the holes would more likely make sure the bolts did not break.  Looks like somebody had already shot a bunch of bronze bolts.

Also there was a danger of a passing dwarf getting a bolt to the head.  Oh well.  Practice for the hospital staff.

Funny enough it looks like the humans left a bunch of arrows on the surface.  Some were copper and many were silver.  The Leader ordered them to be melted down.  Once a Smelter was made, of course.

They also left some....wooden arrows.  Or had those been the elf visitors?  Interesting.

On the 7th of Moonstone Ber announced he was no longer a Herbalist but now a simple Farmer.  Seemed like a step down to Sazir.  But he kept that opinion to himself.

Also the Leader ordered that meals stop being made until the storage for them could catch up.  Brewing, of course, continued.

And wolves had been spotted in the woods.  Not a good sign.  So far they were not acting weird.  No attacks from them yet.  On the other hand the eagle had been trapped!  HAHA!

It would be trained and, of course, eaten.


Sazir took a break to enjoy some radish wine out of a rhyolite mug.  It was...interesting.  He decided he liked it.  The best part was their booze supply had now a LOT of choices between the traditional plants and the above ground plants.  If only the food could be cooked and stored before it went bad.

After that he made some rock mugs.  Too bad they couldn't put some kind of design on it.  Or a mark to show where the mugs had been made.

Then he went and yelled at the Leader.  It made him feel good.  The Leader likely wasn't too happy about it.  But who cared?  The Leader was there to get yelled at. 

He started melting the silver arrows.  A Smelter had been built as had a Metalsmith.  The silver arrows would be turned into bars and then, maybe, made into silver hammers.  Though it would take a lot of silver arrows to make one bar.  Did they even have enough to make a bar?

Mid winter came.  As the Diamond Weights picked up their gear and prepared to start training, at least some of them, Thikut announced he was now a Elite Marksdwarf.  The early winter's squads stopped their training and left the barracks for the pros to take over.

At least the dead ravens had been all cleaned up.  Too bad about the miasma.  And all the freaking birds running around.  The future meals were crowding the place.  Maybe some could become pets?  Too bad there were no such things as war turkeys.  They seemed big enough.  And mean enough.  They had taken most of the nests in the pens.  The meanies.  Out of the eight nests only one had been claimed by a chicken hen.

No snow yet.

Dwarf Fortress - The Town Of Coldness - Lore Of The First Brewing Masters


The old dwarf sat at the front of the room.  He held a ladle in his hands as he examined the young students sitting in front of him.  They all wore the aprons of the school.  He could smell the scent of the mash.  He looked at the water clock.  It was fed by a tiny stream of water that came from one of the pipes in the settlement.

Time to start the lecture.

"It is said the first brewers were likely humans.  As their site governments were ruled from Mead Halls.  Later they started to build proper taverns," said the white haired Master Brewer to the class.

"But while they may have been the first to turn mash into beer it was likely they had help from the cooks," he added with a knowing nod.  "For it was the bakers who likely, accidently, found yeast that could make bread could also make wonderful brews."

"Glory to the Saccharomyces cerevisias!" replied the class in the acient tongue of the First Brewing Masters.

The old dwarf nodded.  "And some dwarf among the Faithful Hall, of course, was able to steal some of the human's sacred wort.  Without it there would be no brew and no civilization."

"Glory to the Sacred Wort!" the class said with a certain amount of respect.  The one who had brought the Fathful Hall the wort was seen as a unknown Hero.



"It took time to understand how to feed the wort, to creat the proper fussion of herbs and grain to make the melt, to create the mash, and to bring about fermentation," he mumbled as he gestured with his ladle.

"Glory to the first batch!" the class said with joy.  Everybody remembered the first batch they helped brew along side the teachers.

"There was much trial and error.  The first open tubs allowed in evil yeast.  Only one in three batches would be drinkable," he added, sounding almost sad, as if the memory of such failures was still living inside his mind.

"They tried to seal the tanks.  But sealed tanks could, and would, explode," he continued.  "Until the airlock was invented.  And success was increased."

"Great is the airlock!" the class whispered in awe.  The airlock, which used water to keep germs out and let pressure out was a thing of legend.  Nobody even knew who had invented it.

The old man glanced at the small water clock and gestured with his ladle.  "All right you lot, get to your next class.  Tomorrow we talk about how the Faithful Hall found out about hops.  Go, shoo!  You have baking next.  And make sure to wash up afterwards.  There've been complaints about flour in the library."

The students happily jumped up and went off to their next class as the old dwarf stood up and cracked his back. 

He understood their happiness.  In baking you could eat your projects.  Even a messed up loaf of bread or a badly made cake could still fill the stomach.

He had a few minutes before the next class started.  Maybe a quick drink?  Maybe the teacher's room had a open keg?

Dwarf Fortress - The Town Of Coldness - Be Careful What You Wish For...


Id Sunsworked, Broker, was going to attend a meeting with the Leader.  Mostly, like others, to complain or sob.

So, of course, he cried while whining at ingiz Swordtundra.

"...and our populace is growing too slowly," he exclaimed right in the Leader's face.  "We'll never have elections.  We need a Mayor who can be replaced when needed.  We need to change leadership so we can have different views and new blood in charge!"

"You are so right," said Swordtundra.  "You have just been promoted.  You are now the Manager and Expedition Leader.  I'm the Broker now.  Here's your desk.  Good luck!"

Swordtundra smacked Id on the back and walked away.

Id blinked.  Well...now there was a change in leadership.  And he had a office. 

Problem was he was part of the Diamond Weights.  And it was mid winter.  Time to train.  So he wrote off a few quick orders before going to pick up his equipment. 

Things would go faster if people stopped crying on him.  They kept stopping him or calling him back to his office.  Well, table next to the farming plots.

Around this time the semi-wild eagle had been butchered.


Which was amazing timing as ANOTHER eagle flew into the entry way, got smashed by a rock trap, and ended up in one of the cage traps. 

But soon a group of wild pigs, a mixture of boars and sows, also charged into the entry way.  The fools.  They set off the traps. 

So the dwarfs locked the doors and started to pull the lever, again and again, that was linked to the bridges.

As some of the wild boars screamed in horror as they were batted about by the drawbridges a snow storm came on the 10th of Opal. 

The inner door was unlocked and the Diamond Weights were sent in to kill whatever was left.

With one wild pig dead and another having been chased into one of the cages the soldiers were called off.  There were still some wild pigs running about outside.  But they were not agitated like the raven.  They were just wild animals who were now scared of the armed soldiers.

And the second eagle was butchered.

Id went back to training, after getting some sleep, and tried to keep his mind on the future.  He was now the Leader.   And now he would have to write the reports to....what was his face?  King Fikod Urmimoddom?


Also he found that people wanted to meet him even while he was sleeping or training or eating.  They would come right into his bedroom!  No respect!

At least the snow storm stopped after a week.  Of course anybody who went outside complained about the snow.  But it looked like the wild pigs were keeping away from the populace at this point.


A few days later the new temple to Alron, the Silvery Church, was finished.  Alron was the Deity of Mountains and many among the populace were worshippers of Alron.  Alron's form was, most often, a female mountain goat.

Like the Unbridled Mark, the first temple made, the second one wasn't much to look at.  It didn't even have a statue yet!

On the 22nd one of the wild sows entered the tunnel of traps and bridges.  Again.  Of course the lever was pulled!

The drawbridges lifted and she was on tossed right THROUGH the earth to the outside!  Ghost pig!  GHOST PIG!!!!

When not being cried on or yelled at Id was able to train some of the soldiers.  And enjoyed it.

Then late winter came, training ended, and he was able to focus on being just the Leader.  Oh goodie.

Dwarf Fortress - The Town Of Coldness - The Cast Part Three


The citizens were not the only folk living in the Town of Coldness.  While there was visitors to the tavern, when it was open to the public, and a few scholars visiting the library, which had no books as of yet, there were also some humans staying in the outpost.

There were the two ground apes, also known as humans, who had been granted residency and had even been given bedrooms.

First was the Human Bard Em Bowelpulley.  He had been given residency in the Summer of the Year 151.  Seemed to be content if not outright happy.


He had a spouse, two lovers, and two children.  Though the spouse COULD be one of the lovers.  Nobody had really asked.  He was somewhat thin, had a tall head, and had greasy hair. 

While he had a large family none of them were in the outpost and he had only a few passing acquaintances among the citizens. 


Also, he had a copper don.  A mid-sized straight metal horn. 

Then there was the Human Poet Rakfil Catcrested.  A female human.  Though it was sometimes hard to tell with the ground apes.

She had been given residency in the Autumn of the Year 151. 


It was said she had two lovers.  But neither of them was at the outpost at the time.  And while having a large family she had only made a passing acquaintance with one of the citizens.

Unlike the other human she seemed pleased with her life.   Her long golden yellow hair wasn't greasy but outside of that she looked like any other human.

So only two ground apes lived, so far, in the settlement.  But who knew who be added to the outpost in the next few years?  More ground apes?  The pointy eared tree dwellera?  The green pit dwellers?  Or maybe more proper brew loving dwarves?

Dwarf Fortress - The Town Of Coldness - Statues And Sand Pears


Ber Gemcrested, Farmer and member of the Diamond Weights, who had been a Former Herbalist, was just getting out of training with most of the squad.


While putting some items away he was surprised to hear that the new visitor, a Dingo Man named Ugo Nationscrescents, had come to visit the outpost.  A Scholar who had come to...well, nobody knew why he was here.  But maybe he was here for the library?

Then one of the wild pigs, a sow, got into the settlement's entry and got hit by one of the stone traps. 

Both doors were locked and the bridges were activated. 

When the bridges were allowed to open again and the doors unlocked nobody could find any remains of the sow.  It has been totally destroyed.


While a Farmer there was demand for rock from some of the Workshops.   So Ber picked up a copper pick and went to digging.

Another wild pig got into the entry, got hit by a rock trap, and ended up in a cage trap.  Training the neat meal time!

Also it turned out the Dingo Man had come to study in the Crystalline Home.  Which made no sense until somebody pointed out to Ber that Crystalline Home was the name of the library.  With no books.

Funny, the new statue ordered for the new temple didn't look anything like Alron.  It looked like a elf.  A elf named Dipane Pickdawn.  An author.  So the Leader, well the NEW Leader Id ordered a new statue made.  Of Alron.  Again.

And the elf statue was ordered to be placed in the library.  It was a statue of an writer after all.

After all the mining Ber had some radish wine.  Seemed a popular drink.  Maybe because it was a new choice?

By the 20th of Obsidian was back to work.  This time he was mashing plants and turning them into slurry.

After that he put away the slurry and went outside to gather more plants for turning into slurry.

Then he decided to get a few sand pears to brew.

As he brewed sand pears into perry another statue was produced.  Another elf author.  The Leader was starting to get pissed.  Though the new artwork was also ordered to be placed in the library.

This time Id wrote down what he wanted and gave the order to the dwarves.  "Make THIS.  Of Alron.  Nothing else."

Ber knew nothing of this as he brewed brew.


By the 28th of Obsidian a proper statue had finally been made for the temple of Alron.

Then, with the 1st of Granite, came early spring.  All training had stopped as the dwarves quickly went to put their military gear away and many went to pick up the seeds.  Sowing had come.

But the water was still frozen and the snow was still on the ground.  Spring may have come according to the clock.  But winter still sat on the lands.

Sorry folks.  Next chapter may take some time as the Adventure Update seemed to have messed up my game.  As a Third Wave of Migrants, a LARGE wave, are now pouring into the map.  I think the update set the game file back to default.  So my small town is already a Hamlet and I am still counting the incoming populace.
